  • Timobloozer - you are talking out your arse. Charlie Christian didn't hold down the guitar gig with Benny Goodman or take part in all those sessions at Minton's by just wailing away on a frigging pentatonic bar after bar...and neither did Buddy Guy, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and indeed Larry Carlton.

They all know where they are in the music - you don't - till you do, feckin', jog on.

  • His approach is very scientific, like it's too much theory or something. You think Buddy Guy or even Charlie Christian ever thought of it in those terms? They just played without analyzing every little thing they were doing with backbeat, beat 3 or 4, resolving sus chords, etc. Larry's a great player and all, but I just don't relate to that type of thinking. It's supposed to be blues, not surgery.

  • @timobloozer All music theory is, is a way to organise the music so that you can train your ears and mind to come up with more ideas. It's basically just so you can give yourself a system so you can create more interesting music, better phrasing, progressions, melodic ideas and such. Anyone who thinks that these great players didnt know theory are incorrect... sure some of them may not of known the traditional musical terms, but they sure knew alot of the concepts of music theory.

  • Terrific, thank you so much, I'm already playing it much better!! And now I can say, "Uh yeah, Larry Carlton taught me that!"

  • @liesenjj You're getting absolute TOP insider tips on music and guitar playing from one of the greatest electric guitarists ever, graciously brought to you free of charge courtesy of TrueFireTV - and all you can do is bitch and whine. UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE! Why don't you go and pay for lessons with somebody who is prepared to drop down to your level and listen to your ideas on how to teach guitar?

  • @twangbarfly I agree 100%, especially since I pay a yearly enrollment fee to Truefire to get this same information. Alright, enrolling in the annual Truefire student plan gives me much more, but where else could you get access to the inner musical thoughts of a musician like Larry Carlton!!
