  • Hello, another "Dave" here!

    The LIRC stops in several places to get permission from the CSX. Between Thompson Rd and Hanna Avenue with the train stretched across the I465 Bridge, like you show. Between Stop 11 Rd and Stop 13 Rd, between County Line Rd and Stop 11 Rd, and between Main St. in Greenwood and Stop 18 Rd.

    The CI north often sits next to the lot for the BMV or the VFW lot or the City Park just to the south of the Main St. grade crossing.

  • this crossing was fixed about a month ago and they have screwd up hanna avenue and put a new crossing signals and they left the ones on shelby street alone

  • It's great to see videos out of Indy. I used to work for United at the Indy Maintenance Center. owned a house there....lost it when United abandoned Indy. How are things in Indy these days? Any jobs?

  • Don't pay any attention to these posts that "Americans are such good drivers." It's not so. My question is, where's a local cop at train time? I could've written at least eight citations for RXR violations, and out of those, probably two or three would've gone to jail for suspended, DUI, warrants or some other idiocy. Americans are lousy drivers. They only THINK they're good, hence, the high accident rate.

  • Great video. Slow as those trains were moving, I, too, would have probably crossed after stopping for the signals. You don't need to be paranoid at a railroad crossing nor should you be a fool. With a little common sense, nobody gets hurt.

    JM: Common sense may not be enough. People sometimes THINK they are using common sense and then go on to make an assumption about the situation, but sometimes that assumption is false, and gets them in trouble. For instance, when the train passes, the warning lights become redundant and no longer need to be obeyed, right? Lots have been killed that way. There could be a second train, unseen by the driver. Just sayin.

  • @JetMechMA I agree a second train approaching poses a danger. I do think, however, that common sense would prevent somebody from crossing the tracks until the lights are off or there is clearly no danger. I'm just saying that I don't buy into people being idiots if they cross a track with the train's obviously a million miles away. Also, I appreciate your being respectful in your comments. I'm amazed at how some folks get so mad on YouTube.....about a railroad crossing video. All the best.

    JM: My father was a railroad employee all his life. And as far as heated comments on Youtube....I've been guilty of that myself. I guess we should all try harder to treat others as we want to be treated. And all the best to you as well.

  • I like how the D2T2 lights flicker before finally coming full-on. I like the "NO LEFT TURN" light, too, though the bulb on it was dim. And that guy in the black truck was being a hypocrite. Complaining about people stopping on the tracks, and then does it himself.

    They Stop, Look, Listen and decide just as though it were a crossing with only crossbucks. (Meaning no signals - for foreign viewers)

    No APO, American drivers are the best in the world. Don't judge the many good ones by the few bad drivers.

    Apparently too many lamps on one flasher relay so they have and additional relay.

    What happened at 2:10 that you cut away?

    Do these signal activate too early before train arrival?

  • Great video it reminds me of a few crossings in my area. I was shocked that people just disregard those signals that often. I'm sure looking at the FRA incident reports would be a fun read

  • I don't understand american people in these kind of situations..

    On almost every railroad crossing video I've seen from America, it's always at least 1 driver who ignores the red light.

    In Sweden, it's kinda rare you see someone ignoring the gates/lights and we don't blow our horns other than in emergency situations.

    Why is this? Is there a good answer..?

  • We are an impatient, reckless, careless, disrespectful country when behind the wheel. When driving, we don't care about other drivers. We don't think about dangers. We don't care about rules. And when something finally does happen, we look for blame elsewhere. Because of this, we must blow our horns.

  • @APOCISM There is no good answer. These people are careless and lazy. It's pop culture to be stupid, sadly. But it looks as though the signals are not activating on time. That doesn't justify people's actions either. But if there were ever a lawsuit resulting from a collision, the railroad would likely be held responsible for premature activation.

    For decades trains have been blowing whistles for grade crosssings.

    Can't stop except if crossing has more signals and gates and winning "Quiet Zone" status.

    Most American drivers are good to excellent.

  • i lived near there a while back. still 5 mins away. those things go nuts b4 the train is even in sight and so locals just run it all the time. train is slow

    park and campus east southern plaza and flea market west crap for a few miles north and south. good barber shop down on thompson.

  • Wow, great video. I can't beleive all morons who run the signals in both clips! I thought people out here in NJ were bad but oh my gosh my jaw dropped when I saw them going through at full speed total disregarding them. I think gates are needed at these crossings! Nice LED's on Windermire St. They are starting to appear out here but the shortline I follow in my area (NYS&W) doesn't spend money to upgrade signals unless pressured or required to.

  • That no left turn is that a light or some other type of device, I see that you also have LED in those signals. In my area it is still just regular bulbs. Like me do people look at you strange when you are filming. I will be going to a busy intersection soon to film a rare 3M bimodule arrow, cant wait to see the looks there.

  • Yeah, it's a light that activates with the crossing lights. In this case, it restricts traffic from a small business from turning onto the tracks during a train. I have one closer to my area (video coming soon) with a red light flashing on top. All others I've seen so far have yellow, but that may change soon. In my area, I work in Indianapolis, and live farther North in Anderson, we are starting to see more and more LED "new" installations. (cont.)

  • This is the first time I've seen them just replace the assemblies instead of the entire set-up. I have a yellow safety/reflective vest that I wear. I get the curious looks, but it's all good. I'm very excited to see the bi-module 3M!

  • Hello Tery, great video! I do not know if you know much about the LIRC, but you are right, it is a very cool railroad to follow. I noted your remark on the train "stopping" at the same spot each day; the LIRC uses has trackage rights out to the CSX Big Four Yards in Avon, IN. LIRC tracks merge with the CSX mainline through Indianapolis 2-miles north of this location you filmed. The train stops south of the city to gain permission to enter the main and proceed on to Avon.   • You are welcome! I noted that you like the older rail crossing signals; there is an old crossing signal in Greenwood on the LIRC. It is similar to the one saying "NO LEFT TURN" in your video. It guards the crossing at Camby Street and Meridian Street where they cross the LIRC. It is about 7-miles south of your video's location, east of Madison Ave and South of County Line Road. The LIRC has some great locations to film at all the way to its terminal in Jeffersonville, IN. Good Luck!
