Wow, this aria is so powerfully moving. Amazing the harmonies and hpw Mussorgsky was able to capture in the music this moment. Always gives me the chills. Great to hear the orchestra's take in this version. Much more of the "Russian" sound than the other European recordings I've heard.
okay that's not a bass, maybe a bass baryton (actually sounds like a baryton to me), the timbre is ugly, the voice weak in general....That's not what I call a great "soviet bass"
Erm, that's not Pirogov. That's a baritone singing the role of Schelkelov, speaker of the Duma, addressing the people in the first scene. This is the 1954 Russian film, in which Pirogov sings Boris.
It´s wonderful to be able to hear these great soviet singers. I have this production on DVD. It is a truly great production. If you could post more video´s from this production it would be much appreciated I think.
Woderful video, bad the singer, very bad director...

I don't think that this is a weak voice. Bbecause of the rich overtones in it I guess it was a carrying voice in a opera house.

Cinema com imagens de grande densidade impressionista. Cinema russo realmente é SINGULAR e BELÍSSIMO em dramaticidade!

I'm confused by the confusion here? Was this video previously mislabled as a Boris scene?
Of course this is a baritone (Ilya Bogdanov) singing Schelkalov, as labeled.
