While I love these earlier performances and think they are amazing. It's still weird to watch her play anything other than a Bosendorfer. However, China is my second favorite Little Earthquakes song and this is an exceptional version of it.
It's like after those lines about him hitting her, she musically smoothes back into something pretty and nice, almost like a victim of abuse trying to make everyone else think the relationship is perfectly fine. I love how Tori is constantly weaving the story, even without words.
I have a better idea of what this song is about now. Those middle 8 lines: " You love to hit me boy" are not on the CD version of Little Earthquakes. I guess this song is not only about a relationship becoming cold and distant (my orginal interpretation), but also abusive. Tori is so raw and emotionally revealing here. Fantastic performance.
