@blaklazer I read that when he sold his soul to shao khan, he was cursed to take the lives of his opponents and take their souls in order to hold off his curse; to age rapidly and die prematurely.

@Ryutobi That's the official canon. Shang must consume souls regularly to avoid aging. That's why since 2 (when his youth was restored by Kahn), his age has slowly advanced, but MUCH faster than any other Kombatant. In the time of 2 he was roughly 20ish, by Armaggeddon he's closing in on 50. His constant defeats prevent him from consuming enough souls to hold off his curse completely. At this point, its only a matter of time before he returns to his MK1 appearance (and that would be AWESOME!)

@Ryutobi he didn't sell his soul to Shao Khan he was cursed by the Elder Gods for betraying the earth realm by trying to help Shao Khan take over the earth realm so they cursed him to either consume souls or die by rapid aging.

In MK games it is mentioned that Shang Tsung learned the "black arts" from the emperor himself I believe. In mk3 Kahn restores Shang Tsung's powers and his youth, hinting also that soul sorcery is Kahns trade and gift. In MK3 you see earth realm being soul sucked during Kahn's invasion. Clearing Kahn taking realms is his source of power from the souls he reaps, probably why he needs to conquer so many.

@AxKeeper Not entirely correct. It was in MK2 that Shang's Youth was restored. And the whole point to Shang stealing souls, is because he is cursed. He must consume souls to remain young, otherwise he will rapidly age, and die of old-age within a few days. Kahn steals souls for power, and nothing more, though.

@key2thabanks That's not official canon, though. Officially, Shang was cursed to have to steal souls in order to live. If he does not regularly consume souls, then he will age rapidly, and die of old age, quickly. Stealing souls allows him to stave this off.
