  • This book was horrible and the movie was worse.

  • I fucking hate this book. I really do.

  • @HilltopGinger haha cool story xD

  • @HilltopGinger

    could you explain why?

  • @truatlanta012 yes as a matter of fact, i can. First of all, i want to state that i am a male who had to read this for english, so all of that "girl stuff" seemed unnecisary and strange to my peers and I. I could never relate to any of the characters, and thier struggles just seemed small and petty. the conflict simply wasnt intiresting to me, and the uneventfullness did not help the fact that i didnt care to begin with.

  • @truatlanta012 (part 2) I am actually still reading this book, about 150 pages in, and its not getting any better. I have a friend, however, who has read furtur, and told me some of the more "shocking" aspects of the novel. These not only failed to make me sad, they did the opposite. this "plot twist" seemed so rediculus, i found it comical. I also hate all of that religion stuff they added in. as an athiest reading the book for school, it just seemed inapropreate and insulting.

  • @truatlanta012 (Part 3) Finally, the main character lily, I never understood her thought process. everything would be going fine one second and she would be ether sobbing or wishing death uppon someone the next minute. this made her seem fake and completely unrelateable. It also dosnt help that my teacher made us read an iterview that spoiled the ending (SPOILER ALERT everything turns out okay! shocker!)

I apoligize for any spelling errors, as im sure there are many.

  • @truatlanta012 (Part 4) I apoligize for my language in the first comment, but it shows you how stronly i feel about this book. also remember that these are my oppinions and are not ment to offend in any way. also remember that i am a boy. this novel is obviously ment for girls, so the fact that the novel literally was not ment for my gender is a factor in my oppinion. i hope this explination suffices.

  • @HilltopGinger I don't think you should assume that the book is meant for girls because it has lots of female characters. I think you didn't understand the book and just assume that's the reason. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions, but there were lots of different aspects of the book to appreciate, the social and political context of the civil rights act etc. Hate the book if you want, but don't assume that means it's bad.

  • @Malibuthunder Im sorry, but you are wrong. Note never did i once say that the book was "bad," I only expressed my strong distaste for it. also, the book is meant for girls. in an interview with sue monk kidd, when talking about the desired reader reaction (which never once applied to me) she descrided the reader as "her" when "they" would have also sufficed. I also understood every word of the book. Im not stupid. it just utterly failed to move me whatsoever.

  • @Malibuthunder the civil rights aspect also seemed like more of a side plot, and served almost solely as a setting for the novel. although im sure it becomes more prominant later in the book, if i wanted to read about civil rights, i would read about civil rights.

in conclusion, although the book was OFFICALY ment for both sexes, sue monk kidd knew who would volentarily read it. she was obviosly catering to women. if not, she has no idea how to cater to men.

    sorry, but its true.

  • I love Queen Latifah I watched this movie because of her. She's amazing -3

  • I'm in the middle of reading this. I didn't like it at first; I don't know why, I just didn't. But seeing the trailer, and getting a sneak peek into the future makes me want to read it all in one go.

  • Great movie!!!

  • Sue Monk Kidd is a phenomenal writer. This is the one movie that I know of that actually lives up to the book. Queen, Jennifer, Alicia... this movie is incredible.

  • Jennifer Hudson is a great actress but definetely not how I saw Rosaleen

  • @fyiiloveonedirection true that she was wasnt good even Dikota

  • I remember watching this movie a few years back when my older cousin brought this movie to my grandma's after he watched the movie.

  • is it ironic how you incidently crossed over a movie on tv and you ignored it , later on for a few months , you discovered how great is it ?

  • I'm reading this is School!

  • Seeing May all happy makes me wanna cry. I loved her so much :(

  • reading the book right now for school and its really good!!

  • Reading the book right now :)

  • A fantastic movie. I just finished watching it. It's 12:10. I was supposed to be in bed but i watched this movie because of Dakota Fanning and I have no regrets. Even when the sad bits were on and I had to not noticably cry and wake everyone up. Fantastic movie with so much meaning, it makes emotions swell up and stir inside. I'm gonna have to look for the book...

  • such a beautiful film so glad i watched it!

  • man this is seriously the best movie out there, idk why not people havnt seen it. theyre really missing out on a life learning show

  • the book is just incredible. brought tears to my eyes. i need to watch the movie soon...i hope they include mays suicide

  • I read the book. Should I watch the movie?

  • @gjosue7 yeah. You don't know what you're missing out on.

  • @gjosue7 I liked the book best but I think it follows the story really closely.

Of course, the characters will look different, but other than that I was not disappointed.

  • Is the movie good?

  • @smokeyhat i absolutely loved it, all though at some points they brought tairs in my eyes

  • I wrote a "Secret Life of Bees" rap and made a funny music video for it. If any of you saw the movie or read the book you should check it out. It's the first on my page. Thanks (:

  • what is the name of they guy from 1:02 - 1:12

  • Does anyone know the name of the song playing from 1:31-1:56?

  • WTF SINCE WHEN IS LILY WHITE!?! I thought the whole point was that she was black!!

  • @7ihearthp What the fuck

  • @7ihearthp LMAO OMG NO...the whole point is she's a white girl who goes to stay in a house of black women and sees them as nothing but love and that race is nothing but hate!

  • To be honest, I'm glad I didn't watch this movie. The book, for me, was pretty romantic and moving. This is the only book I've read where I actually didn't want to watch the movie, just in-case it spoils the world the book created for me.

  • yes she did kill her mom

  • if you don't cry during this movie there is something wrong with you...

  • I want to see the movie sooo badly it was one of the best books I've ever read

  • @jsiff93624 . She had the gun and it was an accident but she technically did kill her because she was holding the gun

  • Tristan Wilds looks so young and cute!!

  • in the book did lily actually shoot her mother? PLEASE ANSWER

  • I read this book, and I have to say, the writing style was excellent. I felt that every character was REAL, and not just empty shells. Honestly, great read.

  • oh ! this is all about white shiit.

  • I read the book two years ago (not for a class or anything) and I still haven't seen the movie!

  • thumbs up if you watched this movie in english class

  • The book is fantastic. One of my all-time favorites. But I dont think the movie lived up to it, really. I really wish Queen Latifah wasnt August, I didnt imagine her to look that way at all.

  • I read the book first when I was sick, it's an inspiring ad beautiful book, and then I saw the movie as well, both are really great!

  • I finished this book last night. :D queen latifa is the only big actor i pictured for one of the characters in this book. ANd i got it right.

  • read the book. one of my favorites. so good.

  • LOVED IT i've seen this movie like 7 times watched it again a couple of minutes ago and i always cry with some parts

  • So, I got in trouble for laughing and crying in english class, due to this magnificent book. SO worth getting sent out. READ IT.

    :) thumbs up

    woop woop

  • Tristan Wilds Just Made Me Want To Watch This Movie!!

  • In the BOOK it says her hair was black.

  • Fail. Lily's hair is blonde when it should be black :P

  • @LikeLegitness no! she was blonde!

  • ohmygod.

dixon from 90210 is in it (:

    wakaka

  • Shitty movie, shitty book.

  • i love the book and movie!!

  • I love everyone of the cast... I'll be watching this right abooooouut now. And who knows the book is always better than the film, I'll definetily be reading this.

  • @friendsrox. Yes I also expected Rosaleen to be older, and because I had all the movie characters on the cover of the book, I just assumed Q Latifa played Rosaleen. On the book, it doesn't even look like Jennifer Hudson, it was only when I started looking for reviews and clips on the movie, that I even knew that Jennifer Hudson was in the movie. I also didn't know that Alicia Keys was in the movie, but watching it, I think she portrayed June perfectly.

  • i love the book...the movie is awesome!!

  • One thing I don't understand is if they knew Lily's mother, why didn't Lily just identify herself as Deborah's daughter to them? Why did she have to lie and didn't Lily go there as a baby?

  • @e0o9kii She didn't know if she was at the right place at first... and the truth was too hard for her to handle when she knew she was in the right place.

  • @e0o9kii Lily didnt want anyone to know who she was because she ran away with rosaleen who is a fugitive. Lily also didnt know they knew her mother. Lily did not go there when she was a baby. hope this helps :)

  • This movie is so beautiful, I love it!

  • i really feel like watching the movie now!

  • wooow

  • Just finished the book last night, can't wait to see the movie. Funny throughout the book I thought Q Latifa played Rosaleen and Alicia keys played August. That is how I saw the characters in my head.

  • @Rikkeline2007 i can imagine Queen Latifah as August...but Jennifer Hudson seems way 2 young 2 b Rosaleen. And what's with May? Who's playing her? it almost looked like a little girl

  • Just finished the book last night, can't wait to see the movie.

  • @BlackRosesandRedWine REALLY? I didn't think so! Lily says she has a round face, no chin, curley black hair but pretty eyes! So in the book she's kind of plain, fat faced with no chin LMAO which is why I didn't think Dakota suited the role physically coz she's really pretty with straight blond hair!

  • Anytime I need a pick-me-up or even to feel safe...I watch this! The most beautiful book ever written and the movie was really great! One of my all time favorite things is "The secret life of bees" ♥

  • brilliant movie

  • I saw this it's so sad ;'(

  • bought this book today. we don't have summer reading lists in England so i just went to the book shop and bought it!

  • @Jessica01274 Do you like it so far?

  • @Support4MySingers

yeah it's really good! just as good - if not better - than the film

  • "jiggling-tit and all" LMFO :D

  • I got thrown into a lit-circle group with 4 other girls for english. That wasn't really the problem, but it made me think the book was mainly for girls. It seemed that way after 30 pages or so but after reading the whole entire book, it's probably one of the best reads I've ever had.

  • @LuvMeOrh8me2 LMAO me too, I'm a guy but I loved that it's a female cast/character book! I loved everything about the book! I always daydream about being lost in the pink house with Lily, Rosaleen, and the boatwright sisters!...especially May! Great book for everyone to read, all ages, sex and colour!

  • i really want ot watch this :D and i am :P

  • thumbs up if you had to read this book for english class

  • @eddaapeddaa Ohhh yup. Haha so good.

  • @charrr550 hahah yeah :)

  • @eddaapeddaa i just read cause i wanted to.

  • I wanna watch this can someone please upload it

  • OMG, I recognize like everyone in this!

  • what's the song at 1:10???

  • @alondra2015 Baby I Need Your Lovin by The Four Tops

  • Really good and very moving, need 2 check out the book xx

  • I'm reading this book in my English class right now. This movie looks good, but the book is a bit too detailed.

  • @HughJackmanBaby I thought that the first time I read it, every time Lily goes to say something or someone goes to tell Lily something about her mum, she stops and explaines what's going on around her and it was pissing me off coz I wanted to know what was going to happen! After you read it, read it again......the details end up being one of the best things about the book....really lets you visualize what's going on and adds such a deapth that makes the book so beautifully written!

  • In every movie Dakota Fanning just blows my mind

I think all regiseurs want her only beques they now that, when dakota is in the movie

Just watching this trailer makes me smile

  • In every movie Dakota Fanning just blows my mind

  • dakota fanning is such a great actor :)

  • every actress in this film outshines...and buts in afantastic perfomance

  • @lwest20 Its an AMAZING movie! This movie actually mean something!

  • you know in the movie whats the ladies religion with that black lady sticking her hand out and they touch her chest no offence

  • @MetalCarrotKid The black mary? They don't really have a religion! August say's their mother was a catholic but they ended up developing their own religion that doesn't really have a name! The black mary was on the front of a boat that came to shore and gave the slaves their freedom through faith but as for an actual religion? They don't have one! Just pray every night before they go to bed holding rosemary beads!

  • really wonderful movie. I 've got so touched!

  • We're reading this book in my English class. It's really good! There is a lot of symbolism and depth to the story.

  • is the movie good?

  • @LPSL17 yes it was in fact i think it really helped dakota fanning boost in popularity of course i know shes in that fake vampire saga but this movie really teaches you just how important your friends and family are in your life and it was thanks to this film that i knew dakota fanning shes more fit for roles like this rather then twilight

  • My teacher (Mrs. Morris)'s cousin wrote that book

  • I didn't knew there was amovie hahahah i just finished reading the book!!!

  • 28-42.

    gotta love it:)

  • i looved the book and the movie was great too :)

  • this movie is so touching! it is my favorite movie of all time. Dakota Fanning is perfect for this part! everyone was amazing in that movie

  • Great performance in the movie. Makes you feel human.

  • OH MY GOD IM SOO GONNA SEE THIS WHEN IM DONE READING THE BOOK!!
