@flamesagittario90 The key to generating a lot of spin is having a fast brushing action. You also need a decent rubber on your bat that is tacky so it can generate the spin.
Im trying to execute this, but the backspin is being reversed once its hit the table. I haven't used a professional bat so that may be the problem, but it seems physics is not on my side.
The spin imparted seems to almost be on par with Ma Lin. But Ma Lin's service technique also comprises of disguising the serve which is the hard part.

@jaholma Sriver EL is a good rubber. You can certainly generate a lot of spin with that rubber as long as it is not too old. As a general rule after about 80 hours of playing time you'll need to replace your rubber.
wow killer serve, looks easy to do from the video but I bet it is hard to pull off when you actually try it for the first few times...no wonder Ma Lin is one of the best table tennis players in the world, if not, THE best! I love how the ball comes back to the net on the other side of the table once u execute this serve, that's a whole lot of back spin generated! really impressive, and good tutorial video...do you need a penholder grip to do this serve? I don't use that grip sadly :(
@iclark2400 Thanks for the comments. No you don't need a penhold grip to do this serve. With the shakehand grip you might just need to modify your grip slightly to allow more wrist. We talk about this in some of our ask the coach answers. If you search on our website you should find it.

Hey Alois! Very good description! But the main difficulty with the MaLin serve is that just after touching so finely the ball to put much backspin as you said, he turns very quickly his bat to cover the ball to give his opponent the "confusion" beetween backspin and topspin choice, and its so quickly done that its very difficult to see and probably to do it like him!!!!! Have you got some tips to workout this movement????
@TTPAT25 Again, it takes a lot of practice. You need to make sure that you still generate the backspin by brushing under the ball. Once you have done that you can change the swing of your bat however you like to confuse you opponent. So start out just by trying to alter your swing once the ball has left your bat.
@Kakashinoor I'm pretty sure, from the oponants position, the ball is visible as he turns as the ball descends however, you might be right, good point :)
@Kakashinoor If it's not illegal it is very close to being illegal. If you are trying this serve make sure to get your arm well out of the way so there is no doubt. As @gimplar mentions, this is an old habit from the days before this was illegal. Alois stopped playing competitively in the 1990's.

I think i'm gonna need some new rubbers to execute that serve :)

@TheMasterdonChannel Yep :)
It's true you need a decent rubber to be able to generate that sort of spin.

Nice to see how it works, I tried backspin on the way how samsonov hits the ball. It's really difficult. Maybe I must do it on your way?
And do you need a very good rubber for good backspin? I use one of the most standard rubbers:
Sriver EL. Do you think it is going to work?

The most difficult part of this serve, is the hand movement, so if you can add a detailed hand motion video,that would be GREAT help.

@pingskills one more key to make the Ma Lin's serve really effective that i know is that make sure you continue swipe your bat to the top.

Isn't your serve illegal because your arm is blocking the ball as it's coming down from the toss?
