  • If you have ever listened to this song in its entirety, it rocks along until Duane's solo. Then he kicks it up a notch. Listen to Berry Oakley and Duane feeding off each other. The segment starting at 3:27 has always been one of my favorites. Just can't say enough of his playing. Left us to soon.

  • One of my favorite solos by Duane. I try to get the essence of it when I play it. It's hard. I've listened to over and over. I really want to get that sound too. It's amazing!

  • what song is this?? I really want to know

  • @dukenukem4lifeyo123

This is Duane Allman's solo from "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", from the Live at Filmore East LP recorded in March 1971. It is an iconic solo from an iconic track from an iconic record. The song was written by Dicky Betts and was included on the ABB's second album, Idlewild South. LAFE was originally a two-disc album, and this was the second song on the side three (the second disc), preceded by "Hot 'Lanta." This is considered the definitive recording of the tune.

  • could've sworn i heard choirs of angels singing in the background

  • Duane was a polymath among guitarists.

He could play ANYthing. He had the range.

If Hendrix had it, and he might have, he didn't demonstrate it.

Truth be told, we lost both of them FAR before they realized their potentials.

  • The second of 100 greatest guitarists of all time !!!!!

  • @kotuehx96 Nope, Duane is the greatest ;)

  • @kotuehx96

Those Rolling Stone lists are usually nonsense, but they probably did get the the first two spots right on that one. Jimi and Duane, Ali and Frazier, Magic and Bird - take your pick.

  • Damn... this is good.

  • my dad used to listen to this when I was a kid but I didn't snap...now that I'm 31.. i dig it!..

I was listening to the radio and Whipping Post came on so I did a search and found out who sung it and started to listen to more of theirs(w/Duane) - excellent.

i hadn't heard much from this band or Duane, but from what I've heard..it's pretty fricken sweet.

  • such a godlike guitarist did not deserve to die that way

  • everybody wants to compare guitarists but nobody pays attention to the rest of the band which were both awesome (the experience and the allman brothers

  • c'mon! why you fight of Jimi vs Duane?, don't be assholes, I'm pretty sure they both weren't enemies!! Surely they enjoyed the music of the other!, so SHUT UP & LET'S HEAR THE MUSIC!!

  • The worst thing about Duane's death is that it was a terrible accident. Many other stars died due to drug abuse and related issues, but Duane died in a motorcycle accident, and reading about how it happened almost brings a tear to my eye.

  • the only man I would turn gay for besides Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour

  • @Django5198 inapropriate idiot

  • @THXcooper I'm afraid it's the truth

  • fucking guitar player ! Rest in Peace duane !

  • for a bit, he isn't better than hendrix

  • Good God Almighty!!! You never get tired of the spontaeous combustion Duane captured that night at the Fillmore East! He went way to soon, man! I love to hear the man and his band live when the firezone hits them! Oak was right in there! Always love this! Thanks! The Outlaw Macon, Ga.

  • ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!! eskiso premo

  • IDK, in Hendrix vids no one compares him to anyone, yet Duane is compared to Hendrix constantly. Shows how much bigger Hendrix was.

  • @dukenukem4lifeyo123 Hendrix lived much more than Duane. If Duane had lived a few more years, now we would be saying "Allman/Betts" as best guitar duo as we say "Lennon/McCartney" as best singers and songwriters. Duane Allman couldn't even taste his most popular songs becouse he died before they became famous. I can't say that Duane was better than Jimmi, but I say Jimmi had much more exposure opportunities and was very popular during his life. Just imagine Duane @Woodstock... He died at 24...

  • Comment removed

  • @dukenukem4lifeyo123 Like who cares? Why is it somebody always has to compare their guitar hero to another guitarist? They were BOTH great in their own right. Neither one had to prove himself to the other, so why do you? We should appreciate each one on their own merits, agreed?

  • @dukenukem4lifeyo123 The only people that compare Duane Allman to Hendrix are you guys the Hendrix fans...Duane Allman was in class by himself and light years in every respect ahead of Hendrix. There is no way to compare the two artist's, they are vastly different.

  • @Skyman46 No one compares Hendrix to ANYONE! Not at all! not even me! I just said that Ive noticed that many fans of guitarists like Zappa, Clampton, and Duane compare those guys to Hendrix! But no one compares Hendrix to anyone!

  • C'étaient tout de même de bonnes années , les années septante !!!!

    quel guitarisss !

  • I just came, all over my monitor.....wait make that my room

  • No other word to describe Duane other than Amazing... takes this solo into five or six "moods" so to speak. the guy could wail, then next minute transition into a melo jazz 'george beson' feel absolutely flawlessly... He had great chops, but he brought such creativity to his music and leads. He was not a Malmsteen or Steve Morse techinical player, but he brought such creative 'soul' and feel to his music that really separated him from his guitar peers..and all at age 24.

    Rest in Peace Duane!

  • better than Hendrix ?

  • @ahhz9 a debate of opinion.

  • @ahhz9 por una pisca no es mejor que hendrix.

  • fun!!

  • ate shiela

  • yeah bitch :L

  • I was a long time Clapton fan till I found out that Duane played all the signature

parts of Layla. Duane was the man.

  • Note the resemblance in the picture..

  • ok... Duane was / is / will be a legend, but .... so was Hendrix & Eric & BB King... they were all masters of a trade of the truly gifted. to compare them esp to each other is not fair as they all have their own sound, soul and a fire to burn all... so instead lets enjoy them and not fight over who the best was........!

  • Wriiten by Dickey. How he gets kicked out of the band is beyond me, thats like getting thrown out of jail.

  • Fuck off with this Jimi Hendrix bullshit. allman was ten times the man and guitarist, there is no debate, so stop bringing your shit upon this beautiful work. And Jimmy played in bands before Hendri was even out so there.

  • @croby14

without hendrix duane wouldnt have written little martha, plus hendrix was a HUGE inspiration to duane and virtually all guitarst of that time.

  • @Glassandcandy i agree with you bro croby 14 is bullshit hendrix is the best

  • valdostastate77

    rock n' roll guitar solo

  • Duane was god along with Eric

  • My brother do the same ...

  • simply put; the BEST R&R solo of ALL TIME!...

  • @MrMotthead69 forgive my ignorance i'm not a musican. What is R&R solo?

  • @valdostastate77 ROCK & ROLL GUITAR SOLO!...

  • @MrMotthead69 I totally agree! This is the greatest live guitar solo in the history of R&R!

  • i am 53 saw the abb first when i was 17, first live performance i attended only new about ramblin man, i am going to the becon in ny in march. inbetween i've learned and studied about skydog . the fact is he's so godlike, that god himself loved his slide playin and quick finger magic so much that he called home, but left us his music untill we all see him live in a peaceful life.

  • This music is all about feeling. It was written by Betts but the idea is that each member of the group "shines", not carrying if Betts was the one who wrote the lines that lead the song (for instance, the last line was actually written by Dickey Betts but Duane had the freedom to jam until he looks at the other guys and they play the final line)! It is a brotherhood of musicians, not just 2 brothers who have a band.

  • Can someone tell me if this is from Live at the Fillmore East?

  • @gibsonrd1 Yes.

  • the best was Jimmy Page !!! No one was better than Jimmy !!! no one is better than him ! NO ONE !!!

  • @deadnorth00 go post somewhere else, you're simply making that posting to troll for an argument, well guess what it's your opinion whos the best. opinions are like assholes, everyones got one and they all stink.

    run along.

  • @deadnorth00

    Yes! Jimi Hendrix....

  • @deadnorth00 Jimi Hendrix is the best he influenced Page thats why his guitar solo is similar Hendrix in 67

  • @fredsassy5 Gee, did Page explain that to you?

  • @fredsassy5 uhh no?

  • how did i end up listening 2 this redneck noise? check out the inbred fuckers lol what a pack of ugly mutants. guitar homos might not rate bieber quite as technically good as this dead redneck but at least there's some structure instead of this fucking mess lol

  • @HUTUMAGIC

You mean you'd rather listen to some Chinese skank sing or watch some fat black chicks shake their asses? Oh, I guess you would.

  • @HUTUMAGIC You obviously don't get it do you? Answer this then, why is he in the top 10 guitarists of all time in every list? Look i don't like this song but have to give him props on it. The solo is amazing!

  • @sd5775 Obvious troll is obvious. :>

  • this is amazing

  • skyfag I'm going to enjoy trolling everyone on your friend's list.

  • @HolyFerdinand So what do you hope to accomplish demented psycho boy???

  • @Skyman46 the ensuing laughter at your plight, and the burdensome knowledge that you brought it on yourself. That's all :)

  • @HolyFerdinand Again what do you hope to accomplish??? I don't even talk to my friends and most of em are people that sent me friend requests in an effort to advertise whatever it is that they're promoting.

    Have it crazy kid enjoy.

  • you really like imagining you're arguing with small MALE children, don't you? U ghey? And/of a pedophile?

  • @HolyFerdinand You made me laugh kid...keep em coming I don't care.

  • heavenly

  • I always thought this song was more to show off Dickey's guitar chops, I guess it went both ways: shows how much of gods both him and Duane are (obviously Duane being the more godlike).

  • Duane was just God

  • the only people who compare and rate guitarists such as Duane and Jimi obviously don't play guitar and simply listen to the music not really knowing how it is produced. Every guitarist out there has something that the other doesn't. Jimi is not better than Duane and Duane is not better than Jimi. It's not even a question of who is better. Each guitarists is his own. A real guitarist and musician shows respect and knows that.

  • ahhhh (sigh) Duane Allman... wow

  • Verry Experimental rock, really could see myself been stoned chilling to this back in the 70's or whenever this was lol, never really followed Allman bro's

  • Why people come here to talk bullshit about Hendrix?, in Hendrix videos nobody blames out Allman, so do the same fuckin thing, i admire these two guys (gods), and both are the greater guitarist of all times.

  • Comment removed

  • @Skyman46 Trash him? you know how to read right?, read again my comment, asshole

  • Comment removed

  • @Skyman46 because i like too his music....

  • duane allman's solos are intense, raw emotional experiences, every note screaming, cajoling, pleading - redolent of lifes sorrows and passions. they transcend the everyday. they cannot be compared. they bring me to tears.

  • I don't think there's a best guitarist, I think there's a group of guitarists who's styles are so iconic, it's impossible to compare, it's like saying the color blue is better than green. If your goin to make lists, make it for yourself! Your favorites! So in that case i would have to go with Frank Zappa, Duane, Hendrix, Lifeson, Jack White! you can't beat that in my book

  • Jimi Hendrix= Most influential guitarist ever

Duane Allman= Greatest/most talented guitarist ever.

  • Check out 'Drivin' South" from the BBC sessions performed Br Jimi >

  • Hey, I've got an idea... how about just agreeing that both Allman and Hendrix are better guitarists than all of us combined, listen to the fantastic music, and move on...?

  • Comment removed

  • @Hjorvars omg finally a man who makes sense!!!!! In my opinion Jimi is the greatest of all time but Duane is still a god.

Both were great. Same with a load of other guitarists. There are loads of amazing guitarists in this world

  • Comment removed

  • Jimi Hendrix videos have no haters, Duane Allman videos have Jimi Hendrix haters.

    This shows Hendrix was better.

  • Jesus Christ! What's wrong with you people? Do you think anyone back in 1970 was arguing about who was "better," Duane or Jimi? Get your heads out of your asses. We were just digging the music. All this "X is better than Y" is for the fuckin' birds. If you can't hear what Duane is doing or what Jimi is doing you're too stupid to be making public comments on either. Get lost.

  • He actually said chord progression and sequences is more important than incredible lead guitar like this??? The day chord progression becomes more important than lead guitar is the day that any idiot who ever picked up a guitars becomes as famous as Jimi Hendrix.

  • @I I must respectively disagree! First let me say that I have both Duane Allman Anthologies and I love Duane. having siad that Hendrix was a genius. Too many guitarists focus on "Purple Haze" , "Machine Gun" and "Foxy Lady" Take some time and listen to "Little Wing" and "The Wind Cries Mary" These are incredible tunes with amazing chord sequences. Hendrix invented various "suspensions" and little introductions and fill-ins that can barely be replicated How many guitarists can play "Little Wing"

  • @Skyman46

I respect both of these men. I have just about everything Brother Duane recorded

(including his work with Aretha Franklyn, John Hammond, Cowboy -Please be with me)

Yes chord sequences matter. its not just about rattling notes Hendrix was an innovator as was Brother Duane

Check out Stevie Ray playing it (no Hendrix videos are

  • hendrix and duane are amazing both are genius and that's all don't need to see who is the best just enjoy both

  • inspector gadget

  • I'm 15 and i'm Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman fan... they are both fantastic guitarist, but this solo is outstanding.. that's it, i've got nothing else to say..

  • @88maverick1

Sorry to burst your bubble, mate. But Hendrix learnt how to master acoustic before jumping onto electric, and during that process, he learnt how to mississipi delta blues on his own, which requires bottle neck. Mind you his guitar was upside down. That's why many regards him as a guitar genius. He knew where all his chords were, though he's utilising a right handed guitar. And yeah, He also played slide guitar on several of Bob Dylan tracks.

  • From a dude who's playing style has been infulenced by both Allman and Hendrix, I must admit that Hendrix is better. Don't get me wrong, Allman was a great guitarist. His rapid riffs, warm and thumping solo made him one of the most influencianal guitar players of all time. But Hendrix, i mean common... He's the guy who made Mr. Clapton say "Holy Shit, how did he do that?!". He's aggressive driving solos and jaw dropping licks were out of this world mate... and his guitar was upside-down, too...

  • @Dilanho10 Clapton and Hendrix suck...upside guitar is better wow, how intelligent?

  • @Skyman46 Oh my God, you're so fucking stuborn. Both my great uncle and his brother worked in sessions with Allman Brothers over in New Orleans. They also had the oppurtunity to help Cream produce their first album. The Hendrix Experience came around, borrowed Cream studio in London. My uncle was one of the first people to witness Hendrix on the guitar in a studio. So, my family are better placed to judge who was better.

  • @Dilanho10 It is common knowledge that hendrix fans are in complete DENIAL....It's evident in every solo Duane left behind why he was clearly better more intelligent not to mention cleaner than Jimi ever was, when we are talking strictly guitar. Obviously Jimi was an important figure and a good solid songwriter but Brother Duane Allman owned the guitar, ACCEPT it.

Clapton and Hendrix are two of the most overrated guitarists that rock-n-roll world will ever know...the prima donnas of rock.

  • What the hell is Oakley doing in this picture? He looks like a vampire going in for the kill.

  • @needianame Jesus

  • @88maverick1 Hendrix did use a slide not to the extent of Duane allman but he used a bottle a couple of times.

  • jimi hendrix is over rated

  • @paygi110709 Nobody's keeping you here sissy boy.

  • @mechtech104 Clearly you have no idea what you['re talking about. WHY ARE YOU HERE??? Why must snot-nosed some of you just plain psychotic come here and disturb the peace serenity tranquility and grace that was Duane Allman. When I was growing up it was still Duane Allman that was talked about very few hendrix fans in the Chicago land area back then. What you're listening to is the hype that Al Hendrix created to sell his sons music and to make shit load of money. Leave Duane Allman fans alone.

  • @HolyFerdinand Like I said spoken like a true demented mentally disturbed little boy...have your mom take you to a doctor asap.

  • @HolyFerdinand Give it a rest kid, holidays are approaching...

  • @HolyFerdinand Kid take your psyche medicine and the whole world will seem a little brighter. I cannot tell a lie Jimi was a star and Brother Duane Allman was an incredible guitarist/musician that we will never see again. Jimi was a good songwriter and a good cross-dresser but Brother Duane owned the guitar. There's no comparison Duane blew his doors off, you need to accept reality for your own good. Again with the Holidays approaching I'm trying to get in a holiday spirit, you should too :))
