I love this engine!!! any clue on whether or not they plan to return 4501 to the Southern green or will it say black after it's restored to working order? I think they should honor the engine and give it the Green paint scheme, but that's not my decision!!!
@HaloCE14 Her cab is off, and workmen/women are inside her boiler and firebox replacing staybolts and boiler tube sheets. There is still a lot of work to be done, but 4501 is under way to being back with us. 630 is very close to being done. She is steamable, but there is still work to be done before she can turn a wheel. Once 630 is done, more attention can be made to 4501, and a tear down can begin on 610.
So the scoop is that 2011 is pretty much a GO for 4501!! We were at East Chattanooga, where she's kept, recently and the guy who sold us tickets said 4501 will be added to the excursions that NS is planning, beginning in 2011. When we saw her at the backshop, she was outside the shop with a black cab, boiler with a red primer, and the front of the boiler still off. I wish I could post pics on here!
rode the 4501 from knoxville to asheville back in the late 70's with my grandpa, great memories. I wished he was still here to watch these videos, thanks for posting them.
there is another video on here where the 4501 had a different whistle and I don't know what kind it is but the video is called "southern 4501 on the central of georgia pline"
In the near future she will run again, once 630 is complete. There is another engine the railroad wants to restore, so that puts this engine 3rd in line for restoration. With that said it'll be another 6 years before #4501 turns a wheel understeam again.
@HaloCE14 well 2011 is alsmot over and 4501 is still in pieces

What do you think it would sound like if none of the chambers were sawed off at the top. Would it have a deeper sound?

A "smokin" video---literally. Looks like the camerman got a little "steamed". Good job. I gotta go see this train. I just wanna see some steam.
