  • Mother of god. This guy's a genius!

  • He looks like a frog.

  • Shit....my English teacher hates me.

  • My English teacher told me I remind him of this song...I don't know if this is a compliment or something else??? XD

  • ...most of the time

  • @nowhere991 the song only applies to players

  • I have been married for 24 yrs. an going this song is a "fluKe", because I never thought like that whenI meant me babe, Hahhhaahaaaaa: he's Douche-bag! He might need to listen to his songs.....leterally!

  • this song gives me chills everytime I listen to it...

  • epic whistling skills

  • Why does someone always start to talk about Justin Bieber on every video. Stop It! I came here for Billy Joel, not Bieber.

  • Ah yes the 70's, remember them well

  • サイコー

  • @m1628m who are you calling a psycho?

  • i think jim carrey sang this somewhere early in his standup. made me so happy. THANKS FOR UPLOADING

  • Its actually kind of impressive how long Billy Joel has sucked for if you stop and think about it. Play on, piano man.

  • It sounds like most comments attack the Artist. What about the true talent that that is lacking. Being able to sing is not a talent you are born with a good voice or not. Billy has been around for 4 decades & this Bieber I don't know who he is. Billy & Elton are in a class all their own. They compose & write almost every song themselves. "Singer Songwriters" that saying came about both of them. I don't think you will ever see the likes of then again If you don't like the guy don't buy his music.

  • Justin Beiber on a Billy Joel performance video....IRRELEVANT.

  • i hear u rndyrhds65. bieber is a joke. music back in the day was the best. thats all i listen to. its sad how they pickup no talent loosers off the street to make millions.

  • nice desu

  • why are the top two comments about justin beiber?

  • Opening piano notes and whistling are hauntingly beautiful.

  • OMG

  • One of the legends....there is no better lyricist...everrrrrrr

  • ILL!!

  • Can I have a time machine, please? The Stranger is my favorite album and I would literally kill to have seen him back in this time.

  • @ciaobellakate ??? are you mad? are you fucking nuts....youtube is your time machine!

  • @lilHippo

It's so not the same! I want to BE there.

  • @ciaobellakate why you have an entire audience with 268,021 people viewing. get some surround sound some bell bottoms, a afro and a afro pick and boom you got your concert.

  • @lilHippo

But I want him in the flesh while he was at his most passionate!

I did see him in concert though in 2008. I was in the front row. So close I grabbed his leg. It was awesome.

  • Comment removed

  • I wish that I was alive to see him in concert in his younger days. They must have been kick ass.

  • @peaceoutlexi hell yeah, listen to the range in his voice. I saw him about 4 years ago, and he still sounded fantastic, but man do I wish I could've seen him in the 70's

  • "The Stranger" and "52nd Street", 1977 and 1978, are still 2 of the greatest back to back releases in rock history. Thanx for the amazing post!!!!!!!!!

  • @CoreaKixx420 i know! 52nd Street is phenoooooominal :)

  • You know, I'd never be able to play this live. I don't have a reliable whistle.

  • Great song love it.....

  • They don't make them like this anymore.

  • Billy Joel is pure talent

  • My father could honestly whistle better than any one I have ever heard. He could change notes tones and pitches all in the same breath without a break in sound. I have never heard another come close.

Now, the whistling intro and close to the song are beautiful but are only fluff when considering the talent and showmanship of the great composer and performer that was Billy Joel. He is truly an artist that will be remember as one of history's masters. I was lucky to grow up in his generation.

  • ? Ever try whistling over a microphone ? not so easy ! and even this Billy Joel does well !!!!

  • 1/110 people who watched this disliked it. good odds

  • OH MY GOD WHAT WAS THAT LAST CHORD HE PLAYED I MUST KNOW IT!

  • @JesseMercArt Dsus4 finishing in D, =D

  • 6 people deserve to be deaf!

  • @Slave0fLife im sorry i voted down ur comment i agree with u (mostly) but i dont want to ever see that name again and no im not talking about billy joel

  • man this sounds just like the recorded version... even the damn whistle billy joel rules

  • Not to be stupid, what is the elephant thing hangi

  • What show is this from? Is there more? Video from this era is gold...

  • it honestly doesn't get any better than that

  • Possibly THE best Billy Joel song ever, great lyric as well.

  • Why does this not have 2,000,000 views!?!

  • Omg he is even great live :'D

  • Billy Joel is my favorite singer and no one's gonna change my mind! :)

  • @rubyhaleybenjamin

    HAHA! Love your comment ruby!!!!!!!!!!

    Like a fucking boss!!!!!!!

  • What a brilliant man!

  • CAN ANYBODY WHISTLE IN THAT HIGH PITCH CONSISTANTLY?

  • If anyone knows the reason why Billy did not play The Stranger for any of his Last Play at Shea concerts, please enlighten me.

  • @bigdbc In fact if I was aware that Billy would definitely be playing The Stranger at a future live concert, I'd pay the price of admission just to hear those whistle solos.

  • @bigdbc Sadly, he doesn't do the whistle parts anymore :( Mark Rivera, his sax player, did it for awhile, but now its just a pre- recorded track :(

  • @ibyankees93 Really? Well that just stinks. Why wouldn't he do them anymore? He couldn't have possibly lost that ability with his old age lol. What a shame : (

  • A 2011 musician could only WISH they make music this good.....

  • Why did Billy write the Stranger?

  • @SuperBubby4 because he could.

  • OMG The Best music, piano, lirics, and whistling ever OMG seriously!

  • Classic performance. on point.

  • What a great voice. This is the best ive heard him sing this song.

  • Fabulus!!!. Billy you are a genius. Yes, you never got the high school diploma, but you really do not need it.

  • 0:30 i start to cry every time... i love his music!

  • Five people have been kicked "right between the eyes."

  • brillant

  • Lol, oh my god, comparing Billy Joel to Justin Bieber? Are you serious? I'm not saying he is a talentless loser, I am able to recognize the possibility that he might be great someday, but at the moment, the comparison is not possible. Bieber fans, you have to agree that the difference in skill is quite great. When Bieber is capable of sounding live as good as or better than in the albums (with absolutely NO pitch mistakes), be it a show or acoustic performance, then we could try a comparison.

  • @Slave0fLife lol, relax, obviously not serious. Waste of yr energy.

  • @Slave0fLife Plus, Billy is a composer - offered unforgettable tunes, like Stevie Wonder or the Beatles. Sorry, nothing Bieber is doing comes close. He has good promo though and is young - which to America, matters most!!!

  • @Slave0fLife Bieber wil never ever even come close to having an ounce of talent or potential that Billy Joel has/had... Beiber can hardly play the guitar and his songs are pretty much written for him by producers. TRUTH. I dont give a fuck how many people get pissed off, Bieber is a fuckin joke. When will real musicians become popular again? Thatd be nice...

  • @rndyrhds65 theres some pretty good musicians out there dude! nothing like billy joel, but theres some talent. you just gotta look past all the biebers and keshas lol

  • @rndyrhds65 when will real music be popular again, man??? i mean seriously! its one thing that nearly no one's making any but also we have to listen to this crap that passes off for music on the radio. it's really unfair.

btw, i was born in 1997 i wasn't even alive when this song was written but I've discovered that the past holds far more beautiful music than today.

  • @rndyrhds65

I don't now why people get so upset about that kid. People like him have come and gone a million times since Billy started in the music business and they'll come and go long after he's gone.

  • @Slave0fLife Absolutely agree. I highly doubt Bieber can even do the whistling part of the intro. LOL.

  • @Slave0fLife I'd say he is a talentless loser xD

  • @Slave0fLife thats like comparing apples and oranges. beiber isnt a musician he is a face to sell disney music to young fangirls. billy joel is a musician that makes music for adults who understand and can relate to his lyrics.

  • @universalsheep The problem is that artists like Bieber are marketed IN THE PLACE OF others who are far more worthy of exposure. It isn't comparing apples and oranges, it's comparing apples to rotten apple cores.

  • This is a brilliant album! I have great respect for this musician. This song more than 30 years, but it's still great! Billy Joel a lot of good songs!

  • Doesn't sounds to everyone like Gary Moore's Spanish Guitar??

  • @Pravindaswani74 Hahaha it sure does...Igor Stravinski once said, "Good composers don't borrow, they steal." BJ was/is a good composer, right.

  • i love the beginning

  • Love Billy Joel! He does a great concert, he's as good live as his CD's very rare~ ♥

  • lol i was kidding

  • @gamp1mpin103 Obvious troll is obvious.

  • youre a complete idiot. Justin Beiber? really? lets be real,

    billy joel= all real vocals;

Justin Beiber= auto tune to hit notes his voice cant hit smoothly

Billy Joel= Able to change voice and make it match greats like ray charles and is able to adapt between anything

justin beiber= still auto tune to do that...

billy joel= growing up in vienna, learned how to box to defend himself

Justin beiber= body guards because he cant defend himself

lets be real about where the real talent lies- B. Joel

  • @KuyAllan I personally can't stand Biebers music, but he IS a good singer. Keep the criticism to what's actually real.

  • @gamp1mpin103 Are you kidding me? Billy Joel is a legend! Justin Bieber is talented, but he's no Billy Joel!

  • @gamp1mpin103 Yes, you're right. Justin Bieber will never be as good as Bill. He can't play as many instruments as Billy can, he didn't do HALF as much and half GOOD audiovisual media as he did, he's a worse singer and his style is a disgrace (unlike Billy). Oh, and people DO like Billy more than poor Justin. Do people on the east like Justin? Most of them I think actually never heard of him. But they heard of Billy Joel, The Beatles, Queen and other GOOD stuff. You're right, indeed. : )

  • @TheRimDoctor

it says "i'm not the only one" but i agree, it's really annoying when people type like that lol

  • I fucking love billy joel.

  • Great song and I just love the beginning. GENIUS!

  • This is one of Billy's musical mysteries to me. This guy was deeper than surface level.

  • I love Billy Joel's range. And that high E he is able to whistle is amazing.

  • what an amazing thing to be able to whistle and sing awesome at the sae time.

  • COOL!

  • I wonder if Christie Brinkley kicked him right between the eyes...

  • @Sincopare she was a hoe

  • billy joel is the fucking tits

  • Doug Stegmeyer, may you rest in peace. You and your Precision are still making me smile.

  • hey all people! i claim a guiness record, dat, with this click, i m watchin it for da milllionth time!!! any competitors out dere?????

  • @nomeshyadu what the hell did you just say?

  • @delly659 what i said was figurative. that means i m so much in love wid the song dat i played it innumerable times. well, no issues, assholes lack a sense of humor and they need even fun tings to be xplained. hope d explaination was jst enough !!!

  • @nomeshyadu i have a sence of humor that was just soooooo not funny, anyway i understood it, you just abbreviated sooooo much stuff i hate to read it 5 times, is it that hard to type out words?

  • @delly659 dude....just shut up.

  • @TheGeneLightShow there you go your getting it, keep practicing it, but really am i the only one here who had trouble reading and understanding what that said, if i am ill shut up but come on

  • @delly659 m nt d only 1 abbreviatin out here, every1 is doin it. so did i. Big Deal!!! well you sound quite polite so i m sorry for being offensive!!

  • @nomeshyadu wow, somebody needs to do little growing up

  • @delly659

    I concur.

I don't understand a word he said. what in the name of god does "m nt d only 1" mean?

  • @TheRimDoctor hahaah thank you

    cheers mate

  • What happened with the wicked mustache?!

    Moar hair plx.

  • 12 of his songs come to rock band 3 dec 14th includding this one.

  • @TheShinobi32 imop; i think kids should learn how to play for real. buy the real gear and practice.

  • @panhead55 For one thing im 35 and for another thing with rock band 3 you learn how to play the drums, key board and guitar for real and how to play the songs for real note for note most people know that so what planet have you been living on mars.

  • @TheShinobi32 LOL, i sometimes wish i was on mars. i'm 34 btw, and i just learned how to play instruments the the old fashion way. maybe adults should let the little kids play video games and people our age should gig out and not be cooped up in the living room. you can't bring rock band 3 to a gig unless you want to be laughed at. we could debate this till i buy that ticket to mars, but nothing will change. have fun though. :)

  • @panhead55 Hey i love video games myself i have since the atari was out and i am a homebody myself i dont mind being at home i have more fun things to do right here at home than you could do practicaly do any where and i dont have to spend a dime and rock band games are way more popular than you think they are same thing with guitar hero.

  • @panhead55 Rock Band 3 teach you how to play

  • enjoyed these songs - wonderful - thanks

  • what a god damn great bass player! hello, they don't them like this anymore.....

  • @panhead55 Oh, totally! I've always loved the bass in this song...

  • @panhead55 not to mention that guy playing the piano with the stylish mullet...

  • @panhead55

Doug Stegmeyer. He was in Billy's band for close to 12 years. He commited suicide in 1995. Doug and Liberty were a very musical rhythm section, one of the best.

  • I love this song so much!

  • how could someone dislike this video ?!!?!

  • damn Liberty is tight on this shit.

  • @petefader he's one of my main influences

  • Billy whisled the intro to the producer and said we need an instrument to do that melody..producer said, yeah you whisling..it went something like that.

  • Sadly... this is the first time I actually SEEN Billy Joel's face... I'm surprised he isn'ta hollywoodized pretty plastic product.... Why Can't We Accept Talent Like This Now Adays For This Genre!?!?!?!?

  • @jesusitasmadres

Damn straight dude, damn straight! Billy Joel in his heyday was simply amazing!

  • realmente un capo billy joel pasan los años... las decadas... y el no pierde su vigencia ni su talento esta una de sus mas viejas canciones es una prueba de su inmenso talento ... solo para oidos acostumbrados a lo mejor... great billy great

  • The ONLY thing cocaine and a piano ever gave me... Billy Joel.

  • @jesusitasmadres

Amazing. The music of my childhood. Love it in every way. Wouldn't trade it for ANYTHIHG. Cheers!

  • Only man to ever be amazing in concert while intoxicated. Amazing artist

  • HE IS THE MASTER-BILLY JOEL .

  • best whistler

  • Wasn't this album done when he was trying to get over the suicide of his wife?

  • @Angel3243 I thought he and his first wife divorced in 1982.

  • so glad this is posted, I have all his albums but forgot about this song. I love it. This should be the new national anthem. unfortunately seems to fit these days.

  • @llederer1 it should be the anthem of the WORLD

  • I love this song! it's so chilling. In Movin' Out it was especially touching after the character James dies in war and his girl is dancing in in a black veil in mourning. The whistling at the beginning and end always gets me....

  • There isn't Russell on guitar!!

The guitarist in this video could be one of the very first musician of Billy.

I think these in Streetlife Serenade album!!!!!

    Good, rare and interesting!!!

  • @maxxxx1972 It's Mr. Steve Khan on the guitar. He played as a studio musican on The Stranger album. Google him.

  • @mrjv61 thanks a lot.

Like i wrote is one of the very first musicians mof billy (like Ron tutt, Larry Carlton etc.)

    Very good.

  • I really like the opening guitar riff. Great vocal performance as well.

  • oh my gosh... even his live whistling is right on! one of the best live performers for sure!! Awesome voice!

  • He's the man! He's been through some tough times in his life but he's still getting it done. One of the best of all time.

  • @chrispmis No kidding, I really wish he'd get back into writing pop music. Especially with all the stuff he could write about.

    he's so amazing with melody.

  • great whistler by the way, wish i could whistle like that

  • what a great singer.

  • Gracias slvrblkk!!

  • Who was the drummer here?

  • Comment removed

  • @jimmyledezma I believe Liberty DeVito

  • @slvrblkk Yeah, it's Liberty

one of my favorite drummers. In fact I did a drum cover of angry young man on my channel (tell me what you think)

  • @sgtpepper1138 He's also my favorite drummer

  • this is an epic song!!!! perfect in every fucking minute!

  • what a great performance. they were playing this whole performance on PBS recently. amazing

  • The part at 1:06 is pure awesome. anyway billy joel is completely pro, he can smoke, drink, play piano and sing at the same time. now THATS awesome : )

  • it really is an epic, very good song

  • Wow

  • What a strong artist. And such a consistent singer; listen to the vocal change in the bridge-not really heard much, especially recently. Billy Joel was never cool, but what a songwriter. When craft could be king.

  • Billy Joel's best, but what a crappy audience

  • i like this song .It is really good.

  • Didn't Billy do a concert for HBO back about 79-80? I was about 10 but it seems I remember watching it.

  • Madre mia que bueno!

  • I have been that stranger too many times to justify.

  • @MrUnderdog1970 I have done a stranger not enough times
