That long explanation really butchered the theme. I don't speak japanese, but I take it the narrator was explaining who and what Batman was. This, I feel, is what is wrong with all of those action anime these days. Too many explanations. We see one new ability in one of the newer animes these days and they take seven or eight minutes to tell us how it works and why they used the move. But our cartoons understand that you don't care, or that you shouldn't.
This is terrible. It detracts from the style and makes it anticlimactic. They should've just cut or animated a brand-new intro if they wanted something like this.
The narration is performed well, but I think it ruins the impact of the opening. At the same time, I suppose almost every American knows the basic plot of Batman, whereas a brief introduction is necessary for Japanese viewers.
I know what you mean. I found myself yelling at the screan. The whole point there was never any voice over was because it was ment to be dark and moody. Its odd that in the hands of the Japanise there would a rubbish intro out there. Have you seen the Japanise version of the old X-men cartoon? Now that is freakin' awsome.
Do you have idea where I can watch some clips of Batman TAS japanese dubbed? There is something speciel about Japanese voices, I cant explain it...I just think japanese voices are amazing for cartoons and anime.
Well to each his own, but you might want to watch what you say, as there are no people who hate people who adore the Japanese a bit too much... sad really
It shouldn't aside from the obvious parallels between Roger/Bruce Wayne, Norman/Alfred, random Beck henchmen and the joker. Stylistically the animation in Big O is far closer to Lupin the Third than BTAS.
Its not really anime the art direction story boards, character designs(which in this version of BTAS were largely inspired by the Fleisher superman series), editing were all strictly American. Some of the actual animation was done by Japanese studios some of it by Korean studios, some of it stateside. That intro was actually entirely American made hence the non-traditional chalk backgrounds. I mean if you only consider where the animation houses are located most anime and animation is Korean.
I'm not sure my skills to translate were enough, though. ;)
This series were aired in 1992-1993 in Japan except several episodes from American original one, and the rest was aired too on Cartoon Network here some years later.
And yes, this series were aired faithfully to keep the coolness of original, without boring J-POP intro. :D
As for the voice actors I can tell if you want more.
Mr. Genda is also known as dubbed voice for Schwarzenegger in Hollywood movies, and when this Batman animated series were aired in Japan there was a CM of canned coffee by Batman (not anime) in Japan with his dubbing too, I'll upload it eventually. :)
do you have any clips of BTAS with the Joker, I'd love to hear his voice, well again thanks for uploading it, maybe It'll re-air with The Dark Knight coming up?
yup most cartoons american cartoons are produced in japan now(teen titans really show this) believe it or not most are made by the people who did DBZ, Toei animation/Bird studios.
Mmm, I don't think Bird Studio works for cartoon or anime fields exactly, because it's just the company by Akira Toriyama the author of Dragon Ball manga/comic.
I love American cartoons having "animated" and "living" images literally, like Kim Possible, that reminded me Batman somehow, you know. ;)
Anyway it's really interesting to see any variations or development in anime fields worldwide. ^_^

nah, the narrotion makes it sounds cheap...reminds of one of those universal studio ride though :)

Personally I like it better without the narration, but the narration did work pretty well nonetheless.

The narration was OK, but it really nailed it at the end with Batman and his pose, just as the lightning strikes.

In my opinion they should really make openings like this again.
Of course make it as graphically advanced as today's animation. Well that's my opinion don't smother me with insults now.

Gotham City --- a city notorious for crime and desire.
Here's a man who fights against evil at the risk of his life.
(radio voice)
"Batmobile, Go. Rush to Gotham Bank. The criminals are running away to West on Robber (*inarticulate) Street."
The man, who pursues justice, has two faces. The face of day is Bruce Wayne, the millionaire. And the face of night is ---- BATMAN.
Evils wriggling in the darkness are waiting for Batman today, again.

The voice actors are....
Batman (Bruce) : Tessho Genda
Joker : Takeshi Aono (my fave!)
Robin :Yasunori Matsumoto
Summer : Kikuko Inoue
etc.

Oh sure, give me some time. I'll do that as "video response" to this video. :)
Cartoon Network here seems to have re-aired "The Batman" these months, though I myself have no way to watch them anyway...

The series were really great! :)
The first 10 episodes aired here with no narration, and had it from 11th ep somehow, by our popular voice actor Koichi Yamadera.
