I don't know if this is 100% accurate but I was told the more elaborate helmets with full face guards and cheek pieces were rarely worn by Vikings in battle.
One because they were expensive and only the leader of a war band could afford one.Two they restricted the user's vision so much they had limited use.
These Helms are nice however and I've noticed a good Helm is a expensive as a good sword and I bet it would have been the same back in the Viking age.
@ENGLISHDOGSOLDIER Mm as far I've heard from a merchant (in armor etc), the reason why was mainly because after vikingbands grew larger and larger through the ages, less fancy equipment was made, mainly because it went a lot faster and you could arm more men that way. Armor always was expensive but the decorations wouldn't have mattered much on price in general.
@ENGLISHDOGSOLDIER Meh just saying what I heard honestly and it does make sense. I like Mr. Low's explanations, they're a bit random, but not wrong as far I know.
@diekerel I don't know if you or Mr Low are right or wrong.Practical archaeology are probably the only way to get an idea but it will be never much more than an idea.
People should exchange facts and theory's and maybe one day we will get closer to the truth about our ancestors.
In my opinion however we will never get close to the mindset of our people because we just do not live in the environment they were born, lived and died in.
Don't take my comment as criticism I have not right to do so.
I would love to purchase one of the Rus helmet with the horse hair braid! I have seen all the other types for sale on various websites, but have not found the Rus helmet. Does anyone know?
you have to put on the horsetail yourself, and they are really expansive but unique and broadly detailed. Also there is a long waiting lists arround 3 years I think... But I haven't found a better craftsman like him before, such detail, such accurate craftsmanship.
The Kievan Rus style is my favorite - I like a bit of chainmail on the back of my neck. I wish they would have shown the Byzantine style helmets the Varangian wore. :\
@95jjs As you might have heard, he talked about the Vendel period. Google "Vendel era" and the Wiki link should have a pic of such a helmet, but it does indeed look a lot like a Anglo-Saxon helmet.
It was not more likely used to protect the eyes. The clue is in the name - nasal guard. Yes, it protects the eyes as well. The aventail would stop your neck from being severed - only half severed, which must be a comfort. In fact, a lot of fancy aventails were made with bronze rings, which are soft and almost no protection at all.
Good valid Oppions - Thanks
I agree with the conection of a Nasal protection to looking like a theif--the word - root- Cameron , Kamron. NICE Video !

@diekerel Well it's funny you should say that but the gentleman in the video was the person I was told by at a History in action meet this year.
He was doing a joint talk with Simon Scarrow comparing the Roman Legion versus Vikings.
Thanks for the input however you had better put Mr Low straight as well.

The helm at 0.59 is not a Viking helm. It's a Lombard helm (take a look at winniler.net ). The only VIking helm is the one at 0.50.

@616midian As the guy in the video said, a Rus helmet. The vikings who settled in eastern Europe adopted some Slavic styles.

The "nose guard" was more likely used to protect the eyes from horizotal cuts.
In the Rus helm, chainmail is Avantail. it stop neck verterbrae from being severed. Its not just for decoration.
