The shows for that DVD were filmed in NYC in 2005. The old MSI shtick was to be more down on themselves during the live act. Hence the cries of "MSI SUX" (which has made it onto merch) and the spitting and giving the finger. The first time I saw MSI, the spit from the front row was a constant shower.

But that has all pretty much stopped, either because the band decided they were done with pretending to be hated, or because the newer fans don't get irony.

That is a good question, and one I've been wondering for years. As near as I can figure out, they do actually play their instruments, but there's a backing track as well, and it's up to the sound guy to decide which comes through more. That's why they can focus more on being entertaining.

But that's just my conspiracy theory, I don't know for sure.
