This was one of my early effects attempts. What I did was add the saber effects and blaster effects frame by frame. Then put it all together in Adobe Premier and added the lightning effects in there. There are easier methods that I use now.

I did the lightsabers frame by frame in Photoshop, though I now use Adobe After Effects. The lightning was generated in Adobe Premier, but you can use After Effects as well. Most visual effects software has features that can do these effects.

Well, they can both look good, depending on your settings (pretty darn identical as far as look.) AE is nice because you can motion track objects to keep the lightning coming out of the same point with minimal effort.
