this defined 80's action adventure movies.... granted its cheesy now,but still has a serious cult following.had some really big names in it too.max von sydow(ming),timothy dalton,(prince baron),brian blessed,(vultan.that man could read a box of cherrios and make it sound cool.) topol (dr zarkov,he did a lot broadway.) and then there was...... Sam.J. Jones...... who did???
Great movie, loved it since I was a kid in the 80s...and..as far as I can remember,it was through this movie I discovered the music of the mighty rock band QUEEN!
If you listen to the fantastic song by Queen, singer Freddie Mercury sings,"Just a man/with a man's courage/no, nothing but a man/ who can never fail/. He does not need Super-man style powers because he is a hero at the level of you and me.
What makes it so good is that it clearly knows it's ridiculous. Star Wars, which was such a rip off of the 1930s seriels, by way of contrast, is ridiculous yet takes itself so seriously, which makes it so bad.
I love Queen's performing of the music of this film. Both music and motion film are unique and unrepeatable! I am sure that any band had done the same.
Excellent trailer. Curious though about the "Pathetic Earthlings, Who Can Save You Now!" line. Was that just for the trailer or was it from a deleted scene?
When I was developing an interest in these old pulp heroes a few months ago, they didn't appear to be much different from one another. I kept singing:
You know, campiness aside, you have to admire the tenacity and imagination that was put into older movies. I'd rather watch Mad Max 2 or 3 than the highest acclaimed wire-fu movie.
Wow, that's a blast from the past. I was in fourth grade when this movie hit the theatres. And no, Christina Aguilera should NOT be in any adaptation of Flash Gordon.
considering Max von Sydow is in both, the lack of fus Ro Dah references here is criminal.

This would be Michael Bay's wet dream of a Superhero movie if he were given the helm of a remake...

There is no one left for the remake who could substitute for Max Von Sydow, WHO CAN SAVE US NOW?

Actually, it's a pretty decent, campy and fun movie. Great with some popcorn and an evening with nothing else to do. I enjoyed it.
