Wow, I commented on this clip 2 years ago. I continue to come back. Though I was a faithful fan of Shirley (the) Horn's rendition, this has become my "go to" when I'm craving this tune. I've grown to love the vocalist even more than i did 2 years ago. Her phrasing is flawless. Her timbre and tone quality are lovely. Also, I now realize the brilliance of the keyboardist. Beautiful chords and progressions. Just a crazy incredible performance on all counts. Thanks for sharing.
I posted my 1st post as I watched this, now I have watched it all I have changed my view ............. Stunning simply stunning, best of luck to the both of you.
I absolutely love this song and Shirley Horne....but this morning you have just taken me to a place that I can't describe. Thank you for sharing. Your voice and phrasing is magnificent...just simply wondrous!
It never cease to make an impression on me- everytime I see it. Michelle with her clear sound and phrasing and Doug with his great accompanying - love band in the box too becuase one can learn from watching Doug ply his masterful work. And what a great song and lyrics
There are many great renditions of this tune, but Shirley Horn's takes the prize. Having said that, this vocalist is pretty awesome. Never heard of her, but I'm already a fan.
umm... the best version of this song is sung by Michael Feinstein. try to check his DVD. you'll see the different between a singer who really uses his emotion, recalling sad memory and those who just sing plain..
I have just been introduced to this song by a friend, in order to help me with my recent tragic loss of my ex husband whom I was still deeply in love with. This touches me in so many places of my heart and helps my gain a little peace. Thank you....
Jeez,so much information.Very well done. Imaginative. Wonderful 'Girl Singer' btw. she impresses me by undersinging, while still revealing that there's plenty of punch when required,( if there's an influence of any other vocalist in her rendition, I'd have to say that I detect traces of Peggy Lee.) This, of course, could only be a compliment. jazz2511 I'd love to see what you'd do with "Lush Life" in 'E-flat', and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", in'C' of your 'lessons',I need to learn.
Great Mandel song, Michelle sings great, and I love your tutorial. As a singer I appreciate someone who can tastefully accompany the vocal. I don't think this is taught enough in jazz programs and it is truely an art. Kudos

Take a piano stool, a laptop and a wireless connection, you can play along ;-)
