does this remind anyone else slightly of 'a man chases a girl'? just the setting with the fountains, not the dance. Donald said this was one of his favorite dances that he ever did.... i love it so much, too!
@odysseetheater They waited for him to recover, but he was too weakened by the medicine to do the strenous dancing and they had to start the film in order to meet the release date. ( I wish Donald could have done White Christmas. Imagine the dancing! ) So, they got Danny Kaye and had a dancer from Broadway do the difficult dancing that Kaye couldn't do. Vera danced with Fred, Gene, and Donald and she said that Donald taught her the sheer joy of dancing.
@ odysseetheater Donald's dance with statues in There's No Business Like Show Business is brilliant - so smooth and elegant with a touch of the humor for which he is so famous. He was a fabulous tap dancer - see his dances with Gene Kelly and those on his own. And, this dance with Vera-Ellen is hailed by critics as so beautifully done. They blend together so perfectly. They were supposed to do White Christmas together but, Donald got that mule sickness.
well it is definitelyso that every dancer is looking like a amateur againstmir astaire. this is formy opinion the "c" categorie of dancing. not thati could do it better, no nono.. but look mrastaire "working" and look donald... nomore explanation needed.......
@odysseetheater Fred Astaire was a master of dance - incredible and unique. But, Donald O'Connor was a fantastic dancer, also. They had different styles. Donald was a very physical dancer. His "Make 'Em Laugh" number from "Singing in the Rain" is iconic and considered the best musical comedy number ever put on film. He won a Golden Globe for his role as Cosmo. His dance with statues in "There's No Business Like Show Business" is absolutely brilliant -so smooth and elegant.
As much as I like Donald O'Connor and Vera-Ellen, I found the choreography pretty generic. Also, Fred Astaire would never have allowed the costume designer to use a dress that blocked his dance movements consistently.
Mybey not, but he never won dress battles w/ his leading ladies. his biggest fued waas with ginger ofcourse. her ostrich feather dress was a huge issue. she threatened to quit and w/ that he lost
cinderella.... :)

hmmm. That is very true about the dress overshadowing Donald's dancing. Strange. And ol' Freddy wouldn't have done it that way, for sure.
