@bigal1940 well, i do not think the US government wanted to risk the possibility of war with russia. at the time it was a real possibility. this was only a few years before the cuban missile crisis. i for one am glad a real war with russia was avoided. i might not have been born if it did occur
I was serving in West Germany with the 616th AC&W Squadron on the 950m
Wasserkuppe in the Fulda gap about 5 clicks from the east german border when
they put up that wall overnight almost Aug 13, 1961. Were we suprised !!
Made headlines all over the world. I believe that if we would have IMMEDIATELY
pushed that wall down that the East Germans/Russians wouldn't have done
anything about it. It stood up for a long time before it finally came down.
