In quanto a Toscanini, ogni ulteriore commento mi pare superfluo...
No-one could build a crescendo like Toscanini...always leaving some in reserve for maximum effect even when it seemed none was left! No-one knew how to use timpani like this great great man....this titan. He is the only conductor I have ever heard who even understood what the tipani section was all about. I think the 1939 recording is better than this from 1953, but this is in better sound.
In the early 1950's, as a small child, I fell in love with the Nutcracker Suite. I received the Toscanini recording as a gift; on the B side were the Skaters Waltz and this performance of the William Tell Overture. I recently bought a CD reissue, but it was not the same performance. Your upload is that performance. Listening to it is precious to me. Many, many thanks!
The speed is the most intense I've ever heard this played. Speed and ultimate brilliance = The Best William Tell Overture that has ever been heard by human ears. My God! Please resurrect this man!
Yes foerster, my dad was in the first violin section during this performance. The wonderful photos remind me of the NBC Orchestra's national tour in 1950 where they brought their magic across the nation. Great memories for me. Bravo for this wonderful upload. A reminder of how great this orchestra was. There will probably NEVER be a string section to match the NBC's EVER again.
