This is a similair story (tho obviously not my career choice as it is for Matt) but I play baseball and at one point we were having fun and winning. The last fun season we were 14-4 and the next year we tried to make imrovements, lost a few close friends and it wasn't fun anymore. I took a year off and came back this season with my own new team. long story short we won the regular season and the playoffs. I'm thinking Matt will make his life and work better if he makes his job fun again.
