Never could figure out why Sonny was not as popular as Elvis Presley and Pat Boone during the 50s. In those days, people placed a greater premium on voice and talent - unlike today - so it's too bad Sonny was never the mainstream star the other two singers were.
I was in the 7th grade in the Bronx, NY when this song came out. We all loved it.
We didn't distinguish between Country, RnB, Rock, etc... it was all Our Music. Maybe we were innocent, maybe we were ignorant, at least we were open to all that we heard.
I was 13 when this song was released and have always been moved by the melody and lyrics. Ironically, Ric Carty and Carole Joyner wrote the song with Carty recording it first. I was not a hit. But this version by James and another by Tab Hunter were both number one hits that sold in excess of a million copies. This song was played at many Friday night dances in chuch halls, union halls and Moose Lodges around the country. Fond memories.
Reminds me of Fort Sill, OK 1956-57. Great times and in love with a girl thats been with me since then. We married Feb 6, 1957 and lived in a tiny apartment in Lawton, OK. Sonny played the 12 string guitar and what a hit it was. Thanks for posting and the memories.
his home town of Hackleburg , Alabama was wiped off the map in the super tornado outbreak of 4-27-2011, My The Father Bless them !!! :) I'm from Guin, just 20 miles south of there, and we had our own Tornado outbreak in April, 3rd 1974, F5 wiped my home town from the map, Guin is now bigger & better then ever, and so will Hackleburg be in the very near future !!!! :-)
Easily one of the greatest songs and performances of all time. I was in high school when it came out but since then have appreciated it even more than then.
This beautiful treasure is still sprinkling its magic & inspiration throughout the fascinating world/universe of music, curiosity & imagination. That's what truly great songs do !!
This song was out when I was only 6 years old. My Uncle use to sit me on his lap and play the guitar and sing it to me as a child. I will always be grateful and cherish those times with him. Thank you Uncle Clifford. You have NEVER been forgotten. You died so young, only 44. You were my second Dad when Daddy died when I was only 8 yrs old. So, 11 yrs later I lost you. You are still thought of by me all the time. I'm sending this to Auntie. She will cry when she hears it again.
In my opinion , the best version, wonder where Sonny J. is today
