holmes jab looked good as always but he wasnt using his right as visciously as he did before plus he was getting old and fat. glad tyson beat both these guys
On September 21, 1985 Larry Holmes lost the IBF Heavyweight title. Upset of the year by The Ring magazine. Spinks becomes the first reigning Light Heavyeight champion to defeat the reigning Heavyweight champion.
Its a bullshit decision in this fight and rematch. Basically some guinni mobsters paid off the judges not to have larry Break Marciano's undefeated record by having Spinks run and survive for 15 rounds while never engaging larry with any type of agression aside for the ocassional one two and backing up. Larry did all the work in this fight
@naturalthing1 I honestly think Holmes is underrated. He never got the recognition that he deserved. This guy had one of the best records in boxing history. He was one of the only people to really take it to Ali and he had one of the longest undefeated streaks in boxing history.
No doubt if holmes was prime he would have stopped spinks. But,he wasn't,but he was still really REALLY good. And,spinks EMBARRASSED him in this fight.Gave him a boxing lesson.I had him winning 9-5 in rounds.first round even.
If Holmes was younger, a little fresher, he would have smoked Spinks...and if he survived the early rounds against Tyson, a younger Holmes would have given Tyson a Buster Douglas type ass whippen....
Sometimes I think the only person alive who never bought into Larry's "whoa is me" routine is Mike Tyson. I don't think Larry is under appreciated. He was one of the all time greats, and you'd be hard pressed to find someone who disagrees.
Larry was 48 wins with no losses, only one fight away equalling rockys record shame he lost this fight

He did loose the first fight, close but still!
He lost it because of inactivity, Spinks made it close to impossible to him to land anything.
He won the rematch though, but it was close too.

Holmes should've punished Spinks throughout the fight as the bigger stronger Fighter with his jab. But he poorly executed.

I think Larry Holmes won both fights against Spinks but as Larry Holmes has said the Judges & Media didn't want him to win.
