I'd like to see a clip of Bob Newhart doing his telephone routine from this movie. They know the Germans have bugged the cave, so he goes on a riff pretending to be on the phone to headquarters, begging them not to send more troops or amunition because they have too much already.
hell is for heroes ...the sand pebbles....the great escape...bullit...and even the blob ...all made in the sixties... great flicks man....seen steves grandson in pirrana 3D....looks almost like him...
RichardElden: please eat lots of shit. It will improve your smell! How could anyone say what you said about Steve McQueen. You must be lonely and a nerd.
Pretty much a textbook example of how to assault a fortified position.Except for the getting shot and blown up part.Gritty well done action war flick with great perfs all around, especially Bobby Darrin and Bob Newhart.
Good film by the way. Not my favorite Siegel by a long shot, but a solid B+, interesting cast, strong flick for the time. Strange to see Bob Newhart and others in this context. One of the top 3 or 4 McQueen performances.
Why all the homophobia and anti-Brit racism on this video?
All you macho American McQueen-ites with your man-crushes on the over-30-years-dead Mr. McCool are about as desperate-sounding a bunch of over-compensating mutterfudgers as I've seen since high school.
it used to make me sad, the end of this film. but i realized later that the end of the war would not have brought any solace to a troubled soldier like Reece, for all the men and women of the free-worlds armed forces, a heartfelt thank-you.
This ranks as one of the most realistic and downbeat warmovies of the Hollywood studio era alongside 1949's "Battleground" and 1956's "Attack! Yes, compared to "Saving Private Ryan," "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" is appears corny and cheap, but by the standards of the time it was made it was a top-rate war movie. It's still a great movie especially due the performance of former U.S. Marine Steve McQueen.
I've been reading Bob Newharts book and he mentions that the heat was unbearable on this shoot and he (Bob) was trying to get "offed" early in the movie so he could take on more lucrative offers that popped up for his comedy. Eventually the studio tired of the cost overruns and stopped sending the director film stock. So that is why this movie has an abrupt and "interpret your own way" ending.
Worst edited action sequence ever..only saved by perhaps the most stylish action figure of all time; Steve McQueen.....Theme of men being hooked on war fueled adrenalin was examined 50 years later in '' The Hurt Locker "..
Damn internet, so far today I've read 'queens' from England talking shit about Audie Murphy, John Wayne and now Steve Mc Queen. Why don't you pommy poofters stick to Elton John video?.
Mcqueen was a notorious pain in the ass to work with. Unhappy with this film he dogged his way thru making it tough on everybody. A studio publicist noticed his attitude and remarked, within hearing of co-star Darin, that Mcqueen was "his own worst enemy". "Not while I'm still alive" said Mr. Darin.
The first time I saw this movie(back in the 1980s) and its ending I was taken by its grittiness! Reese was definitely a tortured soul who only found peace in combat.

Actually taht was Tom Hulce. Peter Firth played Mozart on Broadway but not in the film version. Either way, he was far better than the cancer-ridden midget McQueer, who was only good at beating up Ali McGraw.
It's funny that a sexually conflicted Limey like yourself can only think up harping on McQueen's tragic death. Even his cancer cells had more MAN in them than have you and all your idols collectively!
Superb action movie, the way they used to do them back in the day. First saw this during the Xmas holidays in 2002 and thought McQueen was terrific. He played a ruthless anti-hero, Reese, but had some emotional depth as well. No wonder he was the top '60s Hollywood action man, the same way Eastwood was in the '70s. :)
damn it must have been rough going up against that siegfried line...sum areas the positions were completely empty, but others they was nasty fighting goin on....anyway why iz it that old war movies r better than most new ones

Don Siegel is not underrated. Maybe you mean not as well known to the masses as he should be.

0/10.

Peter Firth is an abominable actor, don't even COMPARE him to greats like Steve McQueen!
I can never forgive him for farking up the character of Mozart as some libertine idiot savant in that lousy film. Go play with your horsies.

I first this movie in the 1980s. Even back in the 60s they made gritty well made non glorifying war films. This is one the best!!

The end really isnt what the film is about and I would advise any to get and watch the whole film.
Shows u an small bunch of men left in the lurch to fend for them selves whilst the glory boys head off.
The men try and do the best they can to survive and what you see here is what happens then they come back.
Very good film and not what you expect.
Watch it.

One my favorites since I was a kid. I love the scene in the pillbox where Larkin is right up in Reese's face. You can cut the tension with a knife!
Or when Reese tricks the floozy barmaid into revealing she was a collaborator. Classic!

Splish Splash... Bobby Darin blew chunks.
McQueen is so much bigger then this film. i always fast forward to his parts... just the way he says "butcher knife" makes your blood run cold.
