Yay! Sodium Ethoxide! And, to answer the question, you get the anhydrous ethanol from: YOU MAKE IT! Silly. Don't drink it, though. Man, that really sucked. It's a horrible thing to feel the fat in your lips and mouth begging to disolve. Owie!
Because it is very different from Na with water. It's a less violent reaction. Also the Na solid sinks rather than floats on top since the alcohol is less dense than water.
If i remember correctly from my chemistry book i think the reaction is so: Na + CH3CH2OH ----> NaCH3CH2O + H2 (unbalanced ofc) ......
The product, Sodium ethanoate contains the Na+ ion and the ethanoate ion, CH3CH2O- . Hope this helps
It seems that you just mix sodium with quite about anything. Anyway, when you mix sodium with ethanol you get sodium ethoxide. If you leave the petri-dish alone for a week the ethoxide should crystalize out as a white/yellowish power.
i'd drink this alcohol, and you just wasted it!!!!

vmelkon: It's possible, that sodium reacts with water too. But it reactss with ethanol as well and sodium ethoxide is forming.

It is possible that the sodium reacts with the water in the ethanol? Unless of course this is high grade lab ethanol.

yuh, C2H5OH + Na => C2H5ONa + H2
aka, loads of energie (exothermic) and gass (H2)
quite usefull reaction (you can charge it when you add Cl so the NaCl drops and leaves the C2H5O charged)

Is sodium ethoxide also sodium ethylate?
