for all of you wondering about what the song means:
Up north, the cheapest brand of vodka you can buy is "Heaven Hill" vodka. Its like $8 for a 1.75 liter. The song is about an alcoholic, and watching a friend die to alcoholism.
I illegally downloaded a bunch of Husker Du albums last night but I think I'm going to delete them. It's just not the same as discovering it one album at a time.
@raphater2000 I've been begging my parents to take me to the record theathre for months now. Last time I was there I bought Land Speed Record and Candy Apple Grey. I'm buying all the Husker Du they have in stock next time.
@Vord1134 That's awesome! I just got Candy Apple Grey on CD. I saw New Day Rising and Zen Arcade on vinyl, I'm going to buy them when I get the funds.
@TRANZEURO well its been five month and ive decided i love every song they've ever done and I'm a huge fan of Sugar and don't care for Grant solo stuff very much.
it's a shame they were never mainstream. these guys were extremely talented and could craft some beautiful lyrics to their dynamic songs. truly one of the most underrated and unnoticed bands of all time. I love them and all they do.
@Studman454 As long as I can listen to them, I don't care if they're mainstream, downstream or upstream. On the other hand, if they lived in China and the Communist Bloc banned them, I would take up arms and go over there.
@bucky468 ... here is a hint... this song was never in the "hot 40"... it never got commercial radio play... none... but i heard it on college radio... ckcu fm in my frozen canadian town... streaming online these days, maybe you can find treasure on there yourself
this really is probably their best song. its just one of those songs where everything sounds so harsh and in your face, but there is this great melody under it all. who knows what its about either. grant hart is openly gay, so really i cant see it being about a romantic encounter with a woman. either way, fucking classic.
@TheNanosteve Well it says so in a lot of music articles, about them "laying the groundwork for emo music" or whatever, but I say we stop pigeon-holing our bands into silly genres and appreciate Husker Du for what they were really doing: high-energy music, with real emotion. I think *that* should be considered a genre in itself
I wouldn't count these guys as pop punk, pop punk bands never played like this, R.E.M. got big after the longest time, but Husker Du pretty much stayed underground, they're alternative legends, they're fucking amazing!!!
@Demonoftheforrest Husker du is punk as shit. Just like the Minutemen, Mojo Nixon, and the Dead Milkmen. They may not have the crappy three power chord rhythm to it, but its no less punk.
Yes I agree they're punk, but they're more like alternative gods rather than a pop punk band is what I was trying to say, besides alternative was punk in those days
It will always be easier to say "no" than "yes". Try to love Husker Du, Sugar, Bob Mould on their own considerable merits. Try to say yes. This stuff is so good. Enjoy it for what it is: perfect rock-n-roll.
so what u're saying is... you don't understand how music pervades the public sphere of consciousness? lmao... it figures.
if pop punk is how the band is considered to be in todays day and age,, then thats what they are. period. cause thats how todays generation uses it's language to describe the band so that's what we come to know them as.
and to whoever said they influenced pop punk yeah that basically makes them a pop punk band cause its like theyre the father of all the pop punk bands today
They loved the Ramones, girl groups, the Beatles, and to a very small degree free Jazz. Their peers were hardcore, Black Flag, etc. They were individuals. They took what they loved growing up and let it inform the songs they wrote within the scene they had a part in developing. Simple as that
go get fuct, this songs about getting all fuct up when your young...nothing more we all all get drunk when where young!!!
