diesel is far cleaner than petrol. what you see is soot from badly tuned engines, not getting enough air. the soot will just fall to the floor eventually. not completely standing up for diesel tho there are some fumes in diesel that is a carcinogenic that can cause cancer. genuinely diesels run alot clearner than any petrol car. and burn way less fuel.

People say that diesels are bad because they smoke when in reality the smoke from the diesels is helping reflect the suns rays reversing global warming, and yet they still get better fuel economy than a prius. You try to "...tune an engine properly...", pull a full double-trailer load of lumber (like these guys were) and see how fast you get off the line. Notice the one on the left literally twisting his frame and has the front end off the ground with the amount of torque it's putting to the rear? These are tuned properly. They are heavily loaded and being forced to perform above and beyond any measure of normalcy. Also, 9 to 18 gears.

So they turned the fuel/air mixture up to be slightly more rich; a lot of trucks have a knob inside the cab for that, and for idle speed. They were also probably getting huge turbos to spool. Again, try tuning something to overcome inertia and potential energy to get 45000lbs moving from a standstill as quickly as possible.

Ever see these things on the drag strip? It's insane.
