1) visual aspects

2) less of a chance of damaging the drum

3) a lot quicker to strap up

4) they plain just look better

when you're marching, the major watches the center's feet, when standing still it's a little more difficult, you have to groove or the major has to be good at watching hands, like the center said, make a little mojo happen ;)
