  • George Harrison on Slide

  • I belive this is the best it ever got. Rock & Roll has been downhill since this moment. This was it-the apex.

  • Dueling guitars...Duane Allman AND Eric Clapton...WOW!

  • the album "the history of eric clapton" a gatefold vinyl had a "tell the truth jam" on it a double album worth finding

  • Clapton just makes you scream with his sounds. Anyone know the guitar, amp and settings/modifications he uses?

  • @MichaelPalinFan2008 From what I've read and from what Clapton divulged, he used his Brownie Stratocaster in the middle-neck position through his Tweed '57 Fender Amp

  • Anyday was a great track from this too!

  • Don't forget Whitlock's vocals and keyboards. The man had a presence ....

  • Sounds like Duane Allman was doing the guitar work on this one. Right??

  • @nandor690 Yup!

  • Hear what I say, 'cause every word's true... you know I wouldn't tell you no lies

  • Eric did a great Live version of 'Tell The Truth' at the "Long Beach Forum-June 1974!" The whole show was great. Sold Out!

  • This badASH song makes me wanna slap my mama

  • @Lilleopea Did mama like it? I usually spank mine, but then I just do what I'm told... 'n my mama done tol' me.

  • They were all very high during these recordings. The give away has to be Erics voice and Duanes shredding.

  • Without my brother Duane, this song would be pretty fuckin' ordinary....

  • @sovereignrebel yeah, probably

  • i think somewhere in the eternal stream of time this song is still goin on it never will end and never should

  • *****

  • This song makes me happy.

  • @chotchcas hey man! Cream and DATD are both great!

  • @beatlemaniac1966 as well is Blind FAith..... Honestly Blind Faith is a hidden Gem. Because "I'm wasted and can't find my way home"

  • @MrGeltabs of course, too bad they only came out with one album, but it is a great one!

  • So who is the 1 bozo? Bad ass stuff! Had this on eight track when it came out. One of the all time greats! What a great cast of musicians! Top 10 all time on my list!

  • Listen to that slide of Duane. Rock on Skydog!!!!!

  • best song Derek Dominoes or Clapton ever did. PERIOD

The guitar duel between the late Duane Allman's slide guitar and Clapton is one of Rock & Roll history's greatest moments. (That also makes the 1st Crossroads festival that Clapton put on in 2007 very special. Derek Trucks does a good job of filling his shoes as Trucks is an outstanding guitarist in her own right.

  • @vschauf Trucks.. in HER own right? Surely that is a typo and you know Derek is a male. :)

  • @vschauf The first Crossroads Festival was in '04, Bud. It was held in Dallas, Texas. 2007 was the second one which was held in Chicago, Illinois.

  • "I can honestly say that he was the best session drummer in the world and he made one hell of a mark as a live one as well. He raised the bar so high that no one will reach it" Bobby Whitlock A Rock~n~Roll Autobiography

  • This kills me every time I hear it. And I'm up to at least 1000 times.

  • Youth with experience, passion and then some, the drugs are working in their brief manner, and talent out the wazoo -- Icarus scrapes against the sun....

  • Derek and the Dominos is better than all the other recordings Clapton has made combined.

  • Shred Fest!!!

  • This is the white man's blues, in the best sense possible.

  • @chotchcas dont bother with cream? how did this comment get thumbed up? 0.o

  • This is so funkadelic...owww telllll the truuuuthhhhh....such a great song with Duane's slide and Eric-what a classic!

  • So funky and cool, Tell the truth, who's been fooling you???Listen to Duane making the slide cry....amazin!

  • I'm looking for the version of Tell the Truth from the D&D Live LP. The one on the D&D Live CD is different. Sadly I tossed the LP years ago, thinking that the CD would have the same content. Any idea where to find it?

  • @cablemanbearpig

The Dominos did two concerts at the Fillmore East. "Tell The Truth" on the original In Concert LP was from the other concert. Wolfgang's Vault has both concerts in full. It's free to sign up and listen.

  • @evanguy i got the CASSETTE! to the time of TEN MIN AND 39 SECS! oh yea haha wooooooot

  • @evanguy Live tape that is

  • Yes.......go Skydog! Mister Allman himself! Tell the truth!!!

    @evanguy

  • @cablemanbearpig I have it but it's not for sale. Sorry but it's one of my favourites of all time.

  • @cablemanbearpig this user, MrXvX83 just loaded it up a couple of weeks ago

  • It's easy to see how great Duane was when you listen to later versions when his slide greatness is missing. I beleve that this is the best song on the Layla Album. If Duane is not the best ever who? No one.

  • @ranny65 well...how about Lowell George..or another George who also played with Clapton..thats who

  • @baliscotsurf Sorry but neither George could hold a candle to Duane.

  • @ranny65 you got it right about this version with duane playing slide but there are sooo many great songs on this album its hard to say but live in concert when isaw them in 70 this was the best

  • good grief...does it get any better? :-)

  • @chotchcas Don't bother with Cream?! Disraeli Gears is classic!

  • Can't beat it!

  • What a great song, I'm playing in a band and lobbying for us to learn and play this song. This one is tough to pull off, the chords aren't hard to follow but the arraingment is a killer.

  • Duane is a gutsy mother fucker soulful as hell, lord that's sweet slide..lol,lol,

  • man. i got to see duane a couple of times. that cat got INTO a guitar, let me tell you what.

  • In my day, when this album was released, everybody was buying it, playing it and declaring it the greatest album ever. And its stood the test of time. Still the greatest album ever!

  • @noff27 - I agree that it's an amazing album that has stood the test of time. But the greatest album ever? I'm not so sure about that. You can't forget about Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Stones, etc. But yes, I agree this is a great album.

  • @noff27 these days people buy justin bieber records, what dp you think?

  • this band... did the live.. delaney & bonnie gigs... november-dec1969.. eric clapton solo lp.. in january... or 1970... the layla lp and george harrison's triple lp.. all things must pass in the spring/summer of 1970... wow... some great tunes all in 9 months... i can count 20 great tunes... awesome !!!

  • very right mate, this music is the shit.

  • He played this last night in Pittsburgh.

What can I say? He's still got talent in spades.

  • so true........i am always looking for bootlegs or imports of live performances; they are not easy to find.

  • 'Don't bother with Cream'?? ...oh dear

  • So true! D&D are so Fucking great!!!

  • @81Mace81 I would almost say don't bother with anything AFTER this album. To much drugs/drink/crap made Eric a dull boy. Unplugged was enjoyable but I'm less keen on his "I wanna be a black bluesman" stuff of the last 10-15 years. Or the 80's "popton".

Sure I like "tracks" from each of the periods I mention, but as an "Album" this is one I can (and do) listen to in its entirety more often than not....

  • @asm1 Thanks for the tip fella, yes his full on blues/ballad route never did alot for me personally, it was his early works (i.e cream) where he really excelled! In my humble opinion anyway... ☺

  • @81Mace81 to be fair Clapton was the least of Cream he was great in Cream but it was Jack and Ginger that made Cream special imo

  • @81Mace81 Totally don't understand what you meant???? Cream-great, Derek and the Dominoes-great................... This is the sfuff, no debate required..... it is all the stuff.... Keep listening to greatness!!!

  • @avalanche344 Errrm I think you've made a mistake there? you should re-read my comment properly sir. I'm defending the might of Cream. tut tut

  • Hi Evanguy:

Thanks for posting one of my "top 10" songs! I'm curious- is this from a cd, or the original vinyl, or from some other source?

    Doc George

  • Haha, I downloaded it from iTunes. I don't even own the vinyl release.

  • Freakin' Right!!! Good ol' blues!!

  • YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • U just had to see them. the best slide, best guitar. best songs, just the FUCKING BEST!!!! I've been around a long time and this the best ever!!!!

  • Try Manassas for some slide...

  • Saw them one time before they split. Just can't tell you how fucing fantastic they were!! I'll never forget it!!!

  • Can you get better than these two master guitarists singing from the gut? Awesome song and thank-you for posting it.

  • i found the tabs for the crossroads version but it would be cool to find these too, i love both versions, duane was the original and derek is doing great to follow

  • Where did you find tabs? All I can find are chords. Can't find the slide or regular guitar parts anywhere.

  • clapton book, message me and remind me and have me send the nanme of the book.

  • I thought the version on the Clapton boxed set was better.

  • yea man. i like both versions but the fast version on the crossroads set is way cooler in my opinion. i beleive they released the fast version as a single or were going to but didnt do it like that for the record (obviously).

  • i saw clapton monday night (6/2) and he opened with this. by the way, its not dominated by slide. its impossible to have too much, especially when its duane.

  • Yeah, I take back what I said, lol. I have to say this song wouldn't be the same without a slide guitar, especially duanes.

  • Tell The Truth is a 16 track recording. Eric plays the strat lead on track 4 and Duane is playing slide on track 11, but Eric is also playing a slide on overdub track 15, recorded on 9/1/70 three days after the other tracks were recorded on 8-28-70. The 20th Anniversary box set has the track sheets.

  • @Longlakedreaming ; any information on the sessions at george harrison's place for teel the truth and b-side roll it over?

I only found a phil spectoréd version....I know there should be about three songs recorded june 1970 at friar's park by derek& domino's and george....please if you know something...

  • Maybe we will get a 40th Anniversary box set for Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs this year that will include those tracks as well as the alternative studio version of Layla!

I originally got Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs as a birthday present in January of 1971. They tour stopped in Detroit December 3, 1970 but I didn't know about the show. The two previous shows on December 1st in Tampa and December 2nd in Buffalo were the only live shows that included Duane.

  • @Longlakedreaming

The Layla Sessions had all the recording they did for the album as well as the remixed version of the finished product. The "Tell the Truth" single was not recorded during those sessions.

  • @mitchmitchell68

The "Tell the Truth" single is available on the Crossroads box set along with some other unreleased Dominos tracks.

  • i fin love this song && the over kill w/ the slide fin rules! rulez!!!!!!!

  • damn evanguy you sure have alot of derek and the dominos videos

  • Love this song, I only wish it weren't dominated by slide. Duane was the best though and it does fit.
