I've admired Hugh since I first heard The Stranglers in '78 or so, been a huge fan ever since. there's no disputing he's an icon. Going to see him in a few weeks and can't frickin' wait. Everything he's done, with the Stranglers and solo, has been gold.
I think hoover dam works because it's raw and not overly mixed similar like the early Stranglers stuff. The songs on hooverdam are not top drawer but the sound is good and that always helps.
To say the truth:I am a big Stranglers AND Hugh fan,but I first hated Hoover Dam.But now, after listening 74 times,i love it,even more then some later stranglers stuff...It is great!!!
@atomicFlyer pe3ople have realized MUSIC COMPRESSION sucks...that's why I'd rather not listen to anything on a computer...take it...from a man who's walked into an auditorium once when 124 high-definition speakers was looking at him!...I mean ...er...me...MP3 are crass and computers suck your brains out,\.
I met Hugh at NXNE a couple weeks back, and he actually told me about this album. Missed his movie though. Amazing guy, and I think this is still amazing stuff.
Bands change sounds and line ups. The stranglers are a different stranglers, Hugh's a different Hugh. But the thing with the ol' 77 punks is that they're coming back without destroying themselves musically. Check out some of the Damned's new stuff. Still fantastic, but evolved.
To paddlepop77 : sorry I don't agree with you, but that's what we call Democracy. You can listen to (and download) the whole album on Hugh Cornwell's website. You'll see that "Within you or Without You" is about 1 mn shorter. Anyway, my favorite song so far is "The Pleasure Of Your Company". Cheers !
I have always loved Hugh, but this song......yawn. I wish he would go back to the old style like tunes from Wired........The Stranglers FOREVER!!!!!!!!
most of your comments are banal and boring especially the one that said it was six minutes too long ,brilliant come back why write any thing at all. my dad's old saying is if you got nothing good to say than don't say it at all.
Well... Not a bad song but : the intro is quite boring, 6 minutes is a bit too long, it just sounds like a basic guitar song a la Bo Diddley. It misses the magic sparkle of The Big Sleep, Leave It Breathe It, or Do Right Bayou. Uuuuh, Sorry, Hugh.
Go Hugh! I agree with Atomic Flier on the electric line-up, but your accoustic set is excellent too. Hopefully this new material will give you the wider audience you deserve.
great stuff and love that bass player ..and her bass is a beauty too

Well written song, but the lack of Dave's keys adding depth and JJ's backing vocals... I can almost hear it as a Stranglers track. Still good though.

Sounds more like the Stranglers than the Stranglers do!

For the record Hoover Dam is a great new album. It gets better with each listen, just like most of Hugh's/Stranglers stuff.
I'm gonna order the cd, because the free download is not the highest quality (but a good intro).
Hugh works the telecaster throughout the album. Some real nice guitar licks.

Don't know about the Pistols though, but it is sheer nostalgia for old punks of '77

What a trio!
Love it!

I'd agree with that too.
Looks like this album could be Hugh's best solo work yet...though it'd have to go some to beat Guilty.
