I love this time period! The dresses are lovely ---flowing and graceful, not akward and tight-fitting, and they don't have electricity but it's more sophisticated than the 1700s -- perfect combination! :D Whoever plays Catherine in the Northanger Abbey parts is beautiful!

"Persuasion" et "Northanger Abbey" sont les productions par le chaine britannique ITV, et "North and South" ("Nord et Sud" un livre par Elizabeth Gaskell) est par le BBC. Malheureusement, je ne peut pas trouver les DVDs de ITV en francais, et pour "Nord et Sud" je le trouve seulement en anglais. Mais, peut-etre je les manque.

Have you ever read the book? Anne is not a "beauty." She's past her prime at the age of 27.  Her not being gorgeous is integral to keeping true to the book. Don't judge on the hairdo and period dress.

Not a big reader of Gothic myself, I think for me the least favourite of JA's books is Mansfield park. I don't think that the recent Billie Piper version helped endear it to me a lot either.

The one with Frances O'Connor I liked much more. another thing about Mansfield Park was the adultery -- I don't think that's really a theme with Jane Austen's novels and I didn't like that it was in Mansfield Park.

I'm actually a big fan of Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey. Northanger was Austen's response to the social critique that reading too many novels would cause women to lose sight of reality, so in a way it was made as a parody. I personally laughed every time Catherine started day dreaming and didn't really see it as gothic. I can relate to her character too, because I know watching movies or shows would influence my train of thought.

And for Mansfield Park, I love how the central figure of Fanny is separate from all the drama and sexual tension, even when pining for Edmund. I know even Mrs. Austen thought the character was boring, but Fanny's steadfast ways and sensible choices are respectable. As for adultery and sex, it's not a central theme, but I do believe that it is present in Jane Austen's novels. Even though the propriety of the 18th didn't approve of it being public, it still existed in it's hushed up form.

And I don't think any screen adaption has managed to perfectly capture Sense and Sensibility. There's so much irony in Jane Austen's diction on social decorum that gets lost.
