there's plenty of creepy things about goin through the locks, but the one thing that would bug the hell outa me on a fetski is "goin up" seein the water go crazy, that get's me every time.
They are tied. They pass a rope along and either attach it or tie on to it. Could be as simple as looping it around your handlebar, but they need to be attached.

You are right it does turn over a lot more when the lock is filling back up.
