One of the best ways to get older people using technology is to find a subject that theyare interested in, which a computer can be so much more useful for. Geneology, collections, and coomunicating with reletives overseas gives them the "hook" to real them in to online life. They can get news from news papers and entertainment from the TV, so a computer is a redundant technology unless you can give them something they want and will use on a regular basis.
There is a great book for seniors to help them learn computer. You can find it on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The book is titled, "Learning Your Computer Through Pictures". Its fun and easy to use with picture instructions of screen captured directions, every step of the way.
I've tried countless times to engage both my father and my mother in learning how to use a computer, and they've both told me, in no uncertain terms, that they are just not interested. They don't want to, don't see any need to, and won't even accept a PC as a gift from me. I'm glad to see that at last there are people of that generation who are not paralyzed by technophobia.
I was planning to put together a gathering for people getting ready to plan their next phase of life. My theory was that the best weapon to keep us out of nursing homes is getting hooded to the online world. This video is an inspiration and I would love to know what the course is about.
