fuck its pretty easy to criticise phils choice in drive now looking back at what happened. he mad the right choice but it didnt pay off so untill your his caddy stop trying to choose his clubs for him.
The way Phil was hitting the ball, I don't know if he would've been able to hit an iron onto the fairway.
A 50-yard banana slice with the driver doesn't magically translate into a long iron ripped right down the middle.
He needed a par to win, bogey for a playoff. If he hit even a 20-yard slice with the driver he would've had a half-decent chance to make par. He hit a horrible shot then made a worse decision.
Phil could not hit the fairway in the late going with driver or any wood he would have tried. Woods were a lost cause for phil at that moment. He should have just swallowed his pride a bit or many would say just be practical and hit his lowest iron of the tee and he hits irons as far as anyone then and now and be around 220 or so back and hit the same 3 or 4 iron again, all he needed was bogie. If he was off the green just chip it on and 2 putt. Idiot ? STUBBORN YES.
3 players blew this one. If Harrington had parred the last 4 holes he's have finished on top. If Phil had parred the last he'd have finished on top....but worst of all if Monty had hit the green from the fairway at 18 he'd have won it. He only needed one decent (not even a 7/10 shot) mid iron and he was the champ!
@Ligerpride Furyk also blew a short par putt on the last hole. And let's not forget that none of these guys would've had a shot if Ogilvy hadn't become unglued in the middle of the round!
If Phil hit a hybrid he would've been 200+ yards out and it probably would've been from the rough, the way he was hitting it that day. He wasn't carrying a 3-wood that day.
A 50-yard slice with a driver doesn't magically translate into a hybrid striped down the middle.
If Phil only needed to make a 5, I see your point but Phil needed a 4 to win. Driver gave himself the best chance to win; he just hit a terrible shot. The second shot was a horrible decision though.
@DanielSong39 he should not have hit driver no matter what. He's long enough he can put an iron in that fairway a solid 240 down the middle. The problem was he was trying to hit a cut. Shaping a shot on the 18th hole with a driver on the toughest course in US Open history with a one stroke lead, that just screams bad idea.
Phil was the last one to choke - he wasn't the only one to choke nor did he have the worst choke.
Geoff Ogilvy had control of the tournament as he took a 2-stroke lead in the middle of the final round. He made 4 bogeys coming down the stretch and needed a chip-in and an up-and-down just to finish at 5 over.
Furyk had a 5-foot putt to finish at 5 over and missed.
Montgomery was at 4-over and was in the middle of the 18th fairway. A terrible shot and an inexplicable three-putt doomed him.
@DanielSong39 Unfortunately Phil's "choke" was completely avoidable if he had just hit a 3 wood or an iron or hybrid he could've parred out and won. The 18th was 450 yards, he easily could've been on in 2 if he hit 3 wood.
@DanielSong39 ogilivy brought them all back into it by falling into a hole with a few holes to play, it was his to lose halfway through as you said. They all choked yes but had ogilivy been more solid it would have probably shut the door alot earlier.
maybe he coulda hit a draw instead off the tee? looked like more branches were hangin on the left side. woulda been his 3rd major in a row. though i don't think he woulda won the british that year. it was the course in which tw won and only hit his driver twice on. not sure lefty coulda been that disicplined
people forget that phil wasnt the only one to fail. Monty just needed a par on the last hole to win but made double and jim needed a par to tie(note that im not even saying birdie was an option on that 18th hole) but made bogie. I think geoff won mostly because he was really lucky down the stretch
@zeldaman1636 Geoff did get lucky with the chip-in on 17 and did well to make par on 18. But he created his own troubles; he had control of the tournament mid-round and nearly gave it away! If Ogilvy had kept things under control he would've won easily and there was nothing Phil or Montgomerie could've done.
Monty blew his chance to win a major and sadly he will never win one.....Monty was one of the best tee to green but i think his putting has stopped him being a MAJOR champ.......too wristy!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a big-time Phil fan, this one still hurts. He could have got the US Open monkey off his back, won a 3rd major in a row, and become the #1 at a time that Tiger was in his prime. Nevertheless, winning the Masters this year was huge for his career.
this still hurts me as a Mickelson and Monty fan.....Monty's collapse I gotta say was worse though....he was square in the middle of the fairway with only a 7-iron and still made double...at least Mickelson was way off near the hospitality tent in the trees--he was almost assured a bogey from there
this Open and watching Lefty blow up late in the last round in 2004 at Shinnecock are too painful to watch
even though tons of people think Monty's collapse was worse I disagree. Monty didnt even collapse, he just put himself in terrible rough and couldn't stop the ball out of that rough. I watched Phil and it was an absolute mental collapse near Jean Van De Velde. His second shot was behind that tree and he got greedy and panicked so he went with a carve that hit the tree. He should have layed up to 100 yards and given himself a look at par cuz he is the best player with a wedge in hand.
Snead should have won an Open but didn't. Palmer and Watson should have won PGA's but didn't. Mickelson should have won an Open by now. But it appears he may be fated to join those others, with a gap in his record by the time his career ends.
Earl Woods was probably an inspiration to all golfing dads to help their kid(s) improve their game(s) and teach them the rules and ettiqute in a way that made learning eaiser
Monty's collapse was much worse. Because he was in the middle of the fairway and had a par attempt. Phil was in the left trees and never had a par chance. So Monty choked worse
Monty's collapse was much worse. Because he was in the middle of the fairway and had a par attempt. Phil was in the left trees and never had a par chance. So Monty choked worse
look, I know that what mickelson did on 18 at winged foot was a monumental collapse, and I do agree, but monty had the same kind of collapse but only worse and nobody ever talks about it, or ever talked about it. he was tied for the lead, hit a beautiful perfect drive, his 2nd shot was in the middle of the fairway...and he ended it like that.
that's cause montgomerie always chokes. it was expected, even w/ a 7 iron in the middle of the fairway he blew it. phil was so close to histroy cause he would've had 3 majors in a row. none the less, even though tiger was not in contention this was the best us opens i've ever seen.
westwood has had great opportunities and put himself in contention to win majors yet time after time the moment gets to him. for a player of that quality his putting is awful. has always let him down, psychologically he is not strong enough to compete in the final round and in the final group on a major sunday. he will never win a major
The golf course was very difficult and everyone was making bogeys by the end.
Mickelson made a bogey on 16 and double on 18. Singh was in the mix and was done in by a string of bogeys. Harrington was right there and became unglued. Furyk gagged on a five-foot putt. Montgomerie had the tournament by the throat and hit a terrible iron shot and made an inexcusable 3-putt. Ferrie was there, but he too made too many bogies.
Heck, let's not forget Ogilvy had complete control of the tournament in the front nine and absolutely gagged it away with one bogey after another. Luckily he ran out of holes and got to watch others make even more bogies than he did.
Believe it or not this is the only time Phil has ever lost a 54-hole lead in a major.

Phil choked but Monty choked even harder. All he had to do was hit the green with a 6 or 7 iron and take the trophy. Easier said than done. IMO this was the best US Open I've ever seen.
What can i say fellas Today Tiger Tiger Tiger is the man and he will win the 2009 us open 2009 i mean 14 for 14 for fairways are you kidding me!!!!! Tiger is the greatest player of all time
@LDis1 No kidding. Just like miggy25 says below. perfect situation. 7 iron from the middle of the fairway and made double. God I was pulling for him too! Hate the way people rag on Monty sometimes. Without doubt one of the all time greats, on the cusp of a major several times. Don't know if he'll get another chance like this one.
I'm glad that Ogilvy was the one who won it after Mickelson fell apart. He's been my favorite player since i started watching golf but he never got much recognition until this year.
He wasn't carrying a 3 wood at the time, he was only carrying a 4 wood. He claims that he couldn't even reach the fairway with his 4-wood. That is something I don't believe
That big Mickelson blowout really made my day that time. The tournament was so boring with Tiger missin' the cut and David Toms withdrawing, but that changed everything.
That golf course is just ridicilous, Winged Foot. The finest course in the world?
How many people do they have working(greenteam) on that course everyday? 80 people just looking after the course everyday? If you work at Winged Foot, let me know...
I work at a golf course and we have like 2 people looking after the course everyday, lol.
what about furyk who missed a five footer on the last or he would have tied ogilvy.monty has been quoted as saying hes never been nervous over a shot, but i bet he was shitting his big pants here."what sort of a shot was that .lol.
it seems like i am so used to Geoff and Phil, i have a swing like Geoff and got my pic with him, and i am a lefty like Phil and got his autograph, lol
its an example of how stupid people are sounding saying it was phil's tournament. Nobody ever has a tournament in the bag until they putt out on the 72nd hole.
i'm just saying that they should give more credit to geoff ogilvy because he had the best score at the end of the day. Its not like phil just handed geoff ogilvy the tournament. geoff ogilvy had to work hard. specially since his drive was in a thick divot
people will always look back on the 06 us open and say, hey thats the event phil should of won.
your right in saying geoff had the lowest score and did very well, but phil did so much better until he got to the last hole of the whole event. and if phil didnt just hand geoff the tournament then i have no idea how to describe it.
As much as people bag on Phil for "losing" the tourney, Ogilvy doesn't get enough credit for "winning" it. He was money when he needed to be, something Mickelson and Monty can't say.
i know that for sure my dad and brother just say that geoff got lucky but who had a divot on the last hole after a superb drive? who ended tiger's streak at doral? who parred despite missing the green? Geoff ogilvy. he did wut he had to do. he won. and if people disagree then the next time tiger wins because somebody wilts then tiger's win will be a fluke. same situation, different person.
I completly agree with you and Geoff has one of the smoothest swings on tour but still, that was Phill's tournament to lose. He outplayed everybody in the field that week but just flat out choked. Don't get me wrong Geoff played some excellent golf and did what he needed to, but he wouldn't have won without a little help from Phill.
phil had the tournament, the trophy was practically in his hands, he lost it, ogilvy deffintly did not win it. Geoff played good, but Phil lost it more than Geoff won it
yet how do they win then? it's probably because they have absolutely no pressure, and no one is watching them, and it's much easier to play golf that way. But in the case of zach johnson, he started tiger down in the face, and still beat him.
They win for the above reasons, but that isn't the men who deserve to win majors! A major winner should be consistent and deserving of the title! That's why Jack, Arnie and Tiger won so many! Phil, Monty and Ernie should be winning majors, no men ranked higher than the amount of days in a year!!!

CarolinasPGApro 1 year ago
@LDis1 Monty simply choked. 7 iron and a two putt and he wins. This one had to hurt the most for Monty.

What about Padraig Harrington's collapse 3 pars to win his first major
and he bogies the 3 of dem
Thank god he 's won some majors now
1a34life 2 years ago
I know, they don't mention Harrington at all. I mean what about Furyk, he missed a 5 foot par putt on the 72nd to miss a playoff.
BUBBASIMS 2 years ago
I'm glad that Ogilvy was the one who won it after Mickelson fell apart. He's been my favorite player since i started watching golf but he never got much recognition until this year.

yep, 2 of the biggest choke artists in the history of golf.

win or lose... id still DO Phil in a heartbeat;-) FORE!!!!
peartfaldo 2 years ago
phil didnt deserve that but he should have just played a 3 wood or 4 iron but he will win a us open one day
silgneb 2 years ago
Yeah. If Mickelson hadn't taken the driver, he would have won.
LDis1 2 years ago
you assume he wouldnt have sliced those as well?
pecky1234 2 years ago
the 3 wood is easier to control for anybody, and yes Phil would have done a better job with the driver.
LDis1 2 years ago
He wasn't carrying a 3 wood at the time, he was only carrying a 4 wood. He claims that he couldn't even reach the fairway with his 4-wood. That is something I don't believe
BUBBASIMS 2 years ago
He could have made it with a 4 wood easily. Thats the lamest thing I have ever heard. He is just trying to make his stupid mistake justified.

People really forget about Monty, he was in the middle of the fairway on 18 with the lead and made double.

nutted up big time. he was in prime position to take that thing. had he taken the lead, phil wouldn't have played 4 wood anyway...
ProOcho116 2 years ago
Monty doubled the 72nd hole from the middle of the fairway and missed a playoff by two. He'll never win a major.
RK831 3 years ago
missed by 1
MacHoodio 3 years ago
That big Mickelson blowout really made my day that time. The tournament was so boring with Tiger missin' the cut and David Toms withdrawing, but that changed everything.

poor mickelson..

That golf course is just ridicilous, Winged Foot. The finest course in the world?
How many people do they have working(greenteam) on that course everyday? 80 people just looking after the course everyday? If you work at Winged Foot, let me know...
I work at a golf course and we have like 2 people looking after the course everyday, lol.
grainy123 3 years ago
Why the driver.Snead did the same the thing. He could have tee'd off with a 5 iron and won the US open.
rw5791 3 years ago
i felt sorry for him
mizping19 3 years ago
what about furyk who missed a five footer on the last or he would have tied ogilvy.monty has been quoted as saying hes never been nervous over a shot, but i bet he was shitting his big pants here."what sort of a shot was that .lol.

i guess tiger's win over rocco was just luck because it was roco's tournament to win not tiger's so i guess roco is in the ssame boat as phil.
supercoolssjf 3 years ago
how was it roccos.
you plum
weerdo08 3 years ago
its an example of how stupid people are sounding saying it was phil's tournament. Nobody ever has a tournament in the bag until they putt out on the 72nd hole.
i'm just saying that they should give more credit to geoff ogilvy because he had the best score at the end of the day. Its not like phil just handed geoff ogilvy the tournament. geoff ogilvy had to work hard. specially since his drive was in a thick divot
supercoolssjf 3 years ago
people will always look back on the 06 us open and say, hey thats the event phil should of won.
your right in saying geoff had the lowest score and did very well, but phil did so much better until he got to the last hole of the whole event. and if phil didnt just hand geoff the tournament then i have no idea how to describe it.
weerdo08 3 years ago
Typical Phil knuckle head !! lol!!

As bad a beat as there ever has been.....not only for Phil BUT Monty too.......
northshore77x 3 years ago
As much as people bag on Phil for "losing" the tourney, Ogilvy doesn't get enough credit for "winning" it. He was money when he needed to be, something Mickelson and Monty can't say.
frickface1 3 years ago 3
i know that for sure my dad and brother just say that geoff got lucky but who had a divot on the last hole after a superb drive? who ended tiger's streak at doral? who parred despite missing the green? Geoff ogilvy. he did wut he had to do. he won. and if people disagree then the next time tiger wins because somebody wilts then tiger's win will be a fluke. same situation, different person.
supercoolssjf 3 years ago
too fucking right mate, Geoff Ogilvy is no fluke and all aussies know that.
MetallicA19185 3 years ago
I completly agree with you and Geoff has one of the smoothest swings on tour but still, that was Phill's tournament to lose. He outplayed everybody in the field that week but just flat out choked. Don't get me wrong Geoff played some excellent golf and did what he needed to, but he wouldn't have won without a little help from Phill.
msudawgs2424 3 years ago
phil had the tournament, the trophy was practically in his hands, he lost it, ogilvy deffintly did not win it. Geoff played good, but Phil lost it more than Geoff won it

hell never win a major
woo738 4 years ago
He sure will.
He has a great record behind him and deserves to win a major. Amateurs like Ben Curtis, Todd Hamilton and Zach Johnson don't deserve majors
pico1409 3 years ago
yet how do they win then? it's probably because they have absolutely no pressure, and no one is watching them, and it's much easier to play golf that way. But in the case of zach johnson, he started tiger down in the face, and still beat him.
hiebsch21 3 years ago
They win for the above reasons, but that isn't the men who deserve to win majors! A major winner should be consistent and deserving of the title! That's why Jack, Arnie and Tiger won so many! Phil, Monty and Ernie should be winning majors, no men ranked higher than the amount of days in a year!!!
