I don't know if your friend is one of those, but I've encountered a number of people who only play the gritty brown-and-gray shooters and beat-em-ups and can't stand this sort of fare.

I think they just escaped from Bowser with Luigi. That's what I recall, anyway.
He seems to treat Luigi as his superior, though I never thought of it as Luigi NOT being part of the Toad Brigade or their commander of some sort. So Luigi's just doing this by his own.
When you're in the cave at the beginning the music kind of reminds me of the place in Paper Mario And The Thousand Year Door where you meet Flurry in those woods...man I love that game.

Well, Luigi isn't exactly the bravest plumber in the Mushroom Kingdom... Maybe he's tagging along with them for a feeling of security?
Or the opposite could be true. Maybe the Toad Brigade is following Luigi because they want to keep a friendly, familiar face around.
