  • I just have to say. People in japan REALLY need to hire someone who SPEAKS english to do these subtitles. XD Seriously, why is that so hard for them?! lolz

Otherwise, this is a cool vid. I like the animation and all. Just ugh.. Japan, please get someone who knows english next time. XD

  • Umetsu is a perfect first-timer for this. He deserves to direct more pieces like this than his dark, gritty, over-the-top yet enjoyable flicks.

  • I need to find another copy of Robot Carnival. This sequence in particular is the best animated short I've ever seen.

  • I'd love to own the dubs of this they used to show on scifi. We'd stay up and watch them, every time.

  • damn kids are assholes in the beginning lol

  • Best segment...with the worst dubbing...:(

  • Umetsu is a genius

  • Genius!

  • anyone have the original english dub?

  • I see that the translators who came up with "All your base are belong to us" and "DO NOT WANT" did some work on the subtitles here.

  • Giggling sooo hard at these subtitles

  • Jeez, these subtitles might as well be in Spanish for all that I undestand them.

  • wow. anime these days is some fag with glasses getting nosebleeds and uppercutted through the roof every five seconds or two bland ass characters in a taking a dump squat charging up their 'ultimate attack' for five episodes.

  • Look, it flied to the sky

Very great, it's so great, right

    lol.

  • o_O that beginning is....really morbid..

  • I hate it when the Japanese try so hard to be "deep."

  • Good Christ the subtitles are terrible on this.

  • Kinda looks like Conan.

  • That robot girl is beautiful, I wish I could make a robot like that.

  • The english dub is way better.

  • @axelswife1 again...very true lol.

  • I saw this years ago without any subtitles or dubbing. I don't think this short suffers from the lack of subtitles . . . it's easy enough to follow even if you can't understand the language.

  • A film from back when the Japanese understood hard work, and didn't farm out animation to Thailand. Just a bunch of spoiled first world wrecks with existential issues and misogyny nowadays.

  • Did BabelFish translate this?

  • OMG! I finally found it!! I had the whole Robot Carnival dub on a VHS but it's not in a good shape anymore and I can't find it in my room T_T

  • The translation really sucks ass on this one, but @Kenou--watch Berserk. They DO make em like this--and better, now. You just have to dig. :)

  • @tinylittlelifeform Berserk is awesome but it's one of the few modern anime that hold a candle to the older stuff like this. The overwhelming majority of new anime is trash in my personal opinion, especially this Bleach and Yugioh shit.

  • Beautiful music..

  • dialogue is pretty MF'n strange! "this soup is the warm sin" WTF????

  • @jesseSager123 if I am not mistaken, this probably is a Hong Kong bootleg. These usually have very poor translations....that said, this movie rocks, always a classic

  • there seems to be something off about the translation for the subs. some parts don't make much sense. or is it just me?

  • so this was the guy that did kite and that one cool devices short eh? Probably his best work right here.

  • yes, yasuomi umetsu, he is a genius, have you seen mezzo forte, it is the shit followed by the series and kite liberator

  • This is my all time favorite anime

  • creepiest thing ever.

  • Great short, such a haunting, yet sickeningly soothing melody

  • At 6:42, that part always scares me.

It looks like a bunch of dead people in a garbage dump. Is everyone a doll or something?

  • This is probably my favorite animated film, or any film, of all time.

  • When was this film made? I can't find the information anywhere!

  • 1986...its on google...if u look up "Robot Carnival"..."Presence" is just one of the stories within "robot carnival", which is the name of the film. it is a collection, as opposed to a feature length film.

  • Been years since I first saw this. Thanks for sharing it.

  • You are my saint for uploading this. I can't say how much this one short affected my childhood, I used to have a very treasured VHS copy before it... I don't know what happened to it. But I can't say how many memory's this brings me.

  • i still have my VHS dub from Sci Fi channel lol...

  • one of the neatest short films ever.

  • The details ,colors ,shadowing ,hell the emotion...they don't make 'em like this any more. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO JAPANAMATION???????!!! I used to love it now I border line hate it.

  • EVERYTHING happened to it.

It's a clash of culture, full of talent and variety- covered in it's stereotypical "modern" style.

Only difference now is, you just gotta dig deeper behind it's gumbo-jumbo to find the real good stuff.

  • totally agree

  • Still alot of great stuff being made - Deathnote was BRILLIANT, and let's not forget Cowboy Beebop!

  • @Kenou The translation really sucks ass on this one, but @Kenou--watch Berserk. They DO make em like this--and better, now. You just have to dig. :)

  • @tinylittlelifeform

"They DO make em like this--and better, now"

    no. NOTHING can touch this.

  • @tinylittlelifeform Yes that showis pretty good.

  • @Kenou Their economy was roaring then and the otaku culture hadn't completely taken over the medium yet.

  • @coprographia very true

  • @Kenou I agree

  • @Kenou you have to look hard for it now.

  • yes i also thank you for posting this, it was my favorite of the series.

  • Im so happy you posted this. thank you very very much.
