I think the story is about a parent, at first there child is happy just to be with them, then as they grow they no longer spend time with there parents and just want money, then they see them even less wanting there own house, then they leave and the parents are sad, but one day, when the kids have grown older as there parents they realize what really matters, they just want to be with the ones they love. =D
the message i got out of it is that this story was really about a wierd super hero who can be invisible and he lives in a pile of branches, makes a raft, sails away and becomes wounded in a epic fight at sea against a super villain, and returns home, victorious but mortal...and spends his last moments of his life with the tree....finally becoming visible as he dies with a old friend...
To me, it's a sad story about growing up and how what we need changes. Also about the selflessness of the tree and in the end I think I can feel some appreciation from the boy's perspective, too.
The whole moral of the story revolves around the tree--how selfless she was, how loving and compassionate she was. If we all act like the tree, think of how wonderful the world could be----the funny thing is we all CAN act like the tree, yet too many choose not to! What greater joy can one get out of life then helping others, caring for others, and showing compassion and empathy? Doing so brings far greater happiness and peace of mind than any other pursuit, endeavor or activity on Earth.
This is one of my favorite books too. I just uploaded a video myself about this and the message to humanity. (One of my favorite songs too) -Thank You for sharing, beautifully put together.
I actually thought it meant don't abuse trees, save trees. Don't be selfish and cut down trees. Trees give us everything. We should plant more trees and save the environment. Idk. This is just what I thought it was about to be honest ><
there are so many ways to read this story - that's its genius. the reader interprets based on their experiences. Sometimes i think of this as being an exploited person in a relationship - the boy isn't appreciative of what the tree gives
but also, it might be like a parent-child relationship. parents give everything for their children: watch them grow up, watch them become weary and hurt, but in the end what the parent has given them becomes the foundation of their life...
Even if you see it as a relationship, it might not be exploiting. it's the kind of selfless love that these days, we'd say it's stupid. "you're being used" and so on. But it's only because we've been taught to focus on ourselves first and other second, even when the other may be the most important person in your life. the sad thing is, perhaps both giving and receiving such pure love is no longer possible in our world. we've learned to be mutually selfish, rather than mutually selfless.
My Mom got this book for me for my first Mother's Day after I had my son. This has always been one of my favorite stories. She wrote inside, "When you think you do not have anything left to give your child, you will realize you have everything he needs!" From a mother's point of view, even when we think we have nothing to give our children, like the stump, maybe we will always be all they need in the end. Five years later and I still read it every day. Love you Mom.
I think for everyone, it could teach something different. You could look at it the way the tree did, give and love, be happy, even though you get nothing in return. Or the boys view, The tree acted as a friend, in a way, to him. He was greedy, yes, but they grew old together. Regardless, they were both happy in some way. The boy, at the end came back to the tree, and i guess died on the tree. Nevertheless, this was a great story, Sad tale, great meaning(s), Just. Fantastic.
How is this about abuse, or wants and needs? Have we forgotten love? The point is, the tree loved the boy, and did what ever she could for him, until there was nothing more that could be done. No matter how much the boy took from the tree, she was always happy, even when the boy was old, and she was a stump, she was still happy to give him something, even if its only a seat.
My mom bought me this book when I was a kid. I read it all the time, I don't think I truely knew the meaning of the story until I watched this today. This is a very good story I think all children should read, that and where the wild things are. Two very good books. I will have to buy this book one day, it has a special meaning to me
This story means a lot to me .. what I learnt from this story is to care and give as much as you possibly can for the people that mean most to you. I could relate this story to the unconditional love that my family and I has for eachother especially my grandfather. When all goes wrong theyre always there to support and cherish.
Although this is a childrens book, there are meaning different deep moral teachings in this story. That is why i have the cover of the book tattoo on my back :)
I think the story is about parenting. It is sad to see the tree lonely, but it is the truth. It is natural for parents to give, and children to take, and the relationship makes both happy. It teaches that it is necessary for people not to take good parenting for granted.
i am crying. because i am the giving tree and he is the boy and it is soooo hard to give and give and give and never receive...but i will love him forever no matter how lonely it is.
@luvkalel It's sad, I feel the same way, but in reality, you have to love yourself enough to stop giving before you have nothing left to give. Love yourself enough to give to YOU first. I've given all that I have and now I have nothing left to give. The boy is not happy and he never will be as long as he isn't happy with what he has and is grateful for it.
@johnandnikkik thanks for your encouraging words. one day i woke up and said "i am not going to do this anymore" and that was the end. you are so right when you said that the boy will never be happy. he did it to me and he will do it to others, because he is a selfish person. the minute i stopped hanging onto him was the day i got my freedom back. you can be free too if you let go. because you deserve better and so do i. i was nothing to him and never will be.... i am not that tree anymore. Amen
@luvkalel Some people never appreciate what they have, and some people never realize what they have because they are too busy looking elsewhere for what they THINK they need. Sure, they'll take your apples, then go looking for other people's apples until they're gone too. Don't wait until you're just a stump. Love, and love as much as you can, but never, ever give ALL your apples away... And never give your apples to someone who doesn't give back.
@ashleysbigfans: yes! when i was very little my mother would sing that to me and read me the book. i hardly ever watch it but i have the dvd. my mom and my dad split up, (im with my dad) i gave the book to the hospital but im going to keep the dvd! T.T
I love to read books that are found in the childrens section and sometimes you come across one special story and the giving tree is one that I think is so moving and beautiful. When I read the book to my family were delighted my 24yr old daughter cried my grandaughter who is 4 now tells the story only through the pictures thankyou shel
I think if you don't "get" the message in this story...you probably didn't read it or have it read to you when you were a child. Those of us who were lucky enough to read or have it read to us as children understand the beauty of it in a way that adult minds possibly can't. Sorry for those who never will understand it. Maybe have a child read to you....
I had it read to me as a child... I got the horror of it at that moment. I think the sad part is people who fail to understand that the story is IRONIC and Shel gives clues to this. Codependency, abuse, manipulation, taking advantage of people's kindness, enabling, allowing one's self to be used and discarded, failing to have appropriate boundaries, "spreading pearls before swine" - Not understanding all that is the tragedy of reading this to kids. Glad I understood these concepts from the start
I find the idea that all kid's stories need a moral pretty insulting to kids who read. It's also a rather narrow view of what children's stories are "supposed" to do. As if a story is supposed to do anything other than tell a story...

There are so many things you can take out of this story...
-No matter how little you have, you can always find something to give
-Be careful who you choose to help and how you choose to help them
-People who give freely tend to be taken advantage of
-Never take advantage of people
-Giving is a source of great happiness, no matter how much it hurts
-Taking begets more desires to fill.
-Never take those who love you for granted
