we Never met gene pitney but we MISS him very much.
Yes, over the years and THANKS TO YOU BRENT for bringing back (centerstage)
mr. GENE PITNEY what a voice that lives on thru youtube and us the people who
really loved him. It's sad really and we just found out glen campells goodbye tour !
it's sad glen is still above ground but mr Gene Pitney ---rocks on in "ROCKN ROLL HEAVEN" r.i.p. Gene Ptney! your fans love you. Thanks BRENT !!! bravo
it's not really over ! we've just begun ! rock on. sir !
Hard to make a call on this one with Roy or Gene. Both did a great version. Very few singers could even attempt a song like this much less make it great. I love them both but my favorite is still Gene.
I've heard OF this medley, but am hearing it for the first time right now...by Gene Pitney. I heard it previously, via Lou Christie's "Live At The Bottom Line" CD of just a few years ago. A nice pairing of the hits by Roy Orbison (1964) and Jimmie "Honeycomb" Rodgers (1966). I saw Gene Pitney for the first (and only) time about eight months before his unexpected death...he was spectacular, even in his mid-60's !!!
This song is a vehicle for great singers. Roy and Gene were both great singers. One thing is that Roy wrote so much material of his own and I don't know if Gene did that much. The likes of their kind are not seen much anymore and without these older acts music just like everything else in this country will start manifesting itself as a pile of shit.
@CharlesBarry I get the Phil Spector feeling in this also; Phil softened by the 70s; one of his late-Philes arrangers, Perry Botkin might also have fashioned this. Whoever did, it fit Gene's vocal power like a glove. God, I miss him!
@MingnonDunn, Thank you for the reply my friend ! we both have good taste in music don't we ! ( LOL ) P.s. what kind of music do you like best ? I mostly like soul music and if I had to pick ( only one ) I would have to pick the late MS. TIMI YURO check her out on YouTube
@CharlesBarry Funny you should mention Yimi Yuro. I enjoyed an evening with her recently on YouTube. She's one of my all time favorites. We do have similar tastes in music. As a child of the 60s, I mostly go for that decade's sounds: Timi, Darlene Love, Ronnie Spector, Mama Cass Elliot, Karen Carpenter and Nancy Wilson. For the guys: Otis Redding, Gene Pitney, Sam Cooke, Chuck Jackson, Ben E. King and Wilson Pickett. LOL
What a range! One of Roy Orbison's friends if he actually hit that high note or did someone else. So he just let in out there for his friend. Gene does that phase well. Gene & Roy--where are their replacements?
In a way it's good they can't be replaced--this way we can keep listening to them! I always thought that Roy and Gene had the best range in the business.
It's obvious that there are a lot off Gene Pitney fans who declare this version is better then the Orbison version. But let be honest; Gene hits the emotional notes very well but doesn't has the real raw vocal power that Orbison puts in the lines "it's over" (3x)
Still I love this version because Gene puts two songs together in one and that what makes it such a great "new" song.
Of all the cover songs he did this is my favorite, I find it almost impossible to pick between this and Roy's, they are different and both excellent. Two great singers and I doubt anyone could match either one with this song!
OH MY GOSH!!! I love Gene Pitney he is my favourite singer of all time but this song is the icing on the cake I had to stop typing and I just sat back and was shocked at the greatness of this song does anyone know where I can get this song from? (as in C.D)And I thought Roy Orbisons version was unbeatable But Gene's is better-miles better please Brent keep sending this video's I'm loving all of them!!!!
I never like re-makes of songs and i never thought anyone could do this song better than Roy Oribson.....but GENE just blows this right out of the water.....it's fantastic, just listen to the raw emotion in his never failing voice....I think he was simply the best ! my best friend and myself are going to his home town ROCKVILLE CT. next month to see the Gene Pitney trail , and visit his grave and tell him how much the world misses him, Bless you Gene .
I didn't think any other male beside R.O. could hit those high (someone described only R.O. could reach nose-bleed highs. I guess Gene and Roy will be singing together now.
I like to believe the both of them are singing up in heaven........Gene was just born to be one of those special kind of people with rare talent.....and had the gift to move people and he gave it to everyone.....i believe he gave his life to has fans....he knew he was not well but continued to tour all over the world........it's just too bad he had to die in a hotel bed instead of his own ! may he sleep with the angels !
THAT'S A JAM'EN GREAT COVER: TO ALL YOU METAL HEADS LETS SEE YOUR IDOL AXCEL ROSE SING THIS SONG THE SAME way like gene Pitney did, without any blaring back ground metal music just his own voice, and the exact same back ground music that's on this song!
Brent,
Thanks for this rare medley.
Do you know if f this available on lp or cd?

@CharlesBarry She's just one of the Top 3 female 'pop' vocalists of the entire 20th Century. That's all.
Just like this one by Pitney. He and Orbison are 2 of the Top 3 male 'pop' vocalists of the said Century.
Having said all that.... It's Over.

He's equal to R.O. on this remake. I don't think I've ever said that about anyone else but then Gene Pitney wasn't just some ordinary singer.

The only person I know that could is the great Roy Orbison himself.

I think the Jimmie Rodgers' version is from Eddy Arnold's song which is a different tune.

Jimmy Rodgers wrote the version of "It's Over" he recorded. Elvis had to get his permission to sing it on his satellite show.
