As to pest deterrent, you might look into reusing old CD-R's or anything reflective then stringing them up around the property. The reflective twinkling lights work pretty well for keeping critters out. I only had one last season in my backyard and had no issues with birds or squirrels. As for the nocturnal critters, that would require something different.
