@keaton1895 Its not insulting unless you are those people who are unfamiliar with Rhythm and poetry and assume what is played in the radio represents it best...
@ICExRED You know you sound like an idiot and I am not sure what you mean by your reply. Hip Hop is okay but dylan and woody guthrie talked a lot of their songs and I would go that far as calling it a early version of rap.
Every time I hear a Viet Nam song from this era I thank my parents for moving back to Canada after a couple of years in "the 'States" in 1958. If not I would have been cannon fodder in that conflict.
@BrawlerAndy Why is it offensive? They were our enemy during the vietnam war. So its true. What is offensive is that the war took place at all. Not that Mr. Paxon wrote a song about smoking pot with the "enemy".
You can be offended if you really want to, but that is kind of an odd response to a song that points out how similar the participants in the conflict were. It doesn't matter your nationality, some things are universal. It's foolish to have an us vs them mentality when in fact, us and them are the same. I don't think Paxton meant to be flippant about the atrocities inflicted upon your land and people but rather to laugh at and thus undermine the US govt that is responsible.
This song was played just about every day for a year when I was in college. Saw Tom last night at McCabes in Santa Monica. He didn't do this one, but it brought back the memories of this right away.
Saw him perform it at the first (I think) Lincoln Festivals almost 40 years ago. The whole audience gort to their feet and roared at the punch line. A superb day.
OMG, I heard this song in Vietnam. It was played by one of our enlisted men and I've been looking for the source for years. I was told it was Arlo Guthrie. It was true. The weed there made what was smoked in the states little better than smoking cabbage. I would always warn the new troops that if they scored some local weed to take their time. I'd have them come to me if they got the paranoids because after all it isn't paranoia if they. Glad I finally found the source after all this time.
Heureusement que nous avons eu des chanteurs, qui ne sont pas français à l'origine, comme "Graeme Allright" ou "Steve Waring" pour importer ces merveilles de la chanson populaire américaine. Quelle leçon de modestie !
Wow.. i first heard this when Tom played it at the Isle of Wight 's first festival with Bob Dylan.. Tom was brilliant then and is still haven't heard it for so long, thanks so much for putting this up.
I was also at that first Isle of Wight festival and this song got the biggest response of the whole three days, The Who, The Band, Dylan et al.

@ICExRED first of all the title tells all, talking ...... Besides that the rhythm and poetry is like that in most music.

@keaton1895 What im trying to make you understand is that there is singing and then there is rapping..
even though this is NOT Hip hop he is technically rapping.
Talking pot luck came before Hip Hop thats why im saying this is like an early form of rapping.
the first hip hop people talked just like this except the instrumentals were different of course..

@ICExRED Okay I concede to your point. Thanks for the clarification

Why do you find it offensive? The only line I can think would be offensive is "A little cat in black PJs"
