4:42 is Queen Lili'uokalani - Aloha 'Oe (Farewell to Thee). Sung much too fast in the cartoon, to the point of being difficult to compare, but the chorus in Elvis' cover makes it really obvious.
Anybody recognize the quacking Donald does before the Sailor diddy? It's Daisy's tune. Anybody interested in that song watch "Crazy Over Daisy" for it.
The cartoon ends before Donald can put together his own boat from the tree he chopped down. So, my question is this: does he ever get revenge on them once his boat is complete?
That's not the reason. There are films from WAY before the 50s with crystal clear sound. It has to do with either the quality of the DVD print or (more likely) the upload.
@TheGreshProject yeah it get's a little creepy at moment's and it is annoying when chip say half a sentence and dale finishes the sentence chip said if you notice that in ep's they appear in
When they showed Donald at the end, he was making another boat. What happens afterwards? Does he get his revenge on Chip and Dale later on? Just wondering.
This is one of a handful of Donald shorts directed by Jack Kinney, who was otherwise mainly responsible for Goofy shorts. Other Kinney-directed Donald shorts included "Der Feuhrer's Face", "Duck Pimples" and "Donald's Diary".
@darmokthegreen It was during the time when Disney shelled out all those package films after the war. Kinney also was a sequence director on "Pinocchio" and "Dumbo".
I really wish someone would wise up and put these kind of cartoons back on tv instead of this load of crap they give our children to watch now! I love these cartoons and can only find them here. Thanks whoever posted them. Really considerate of you.
@bpsmiller263 You should be able to find these in a collector set @ best buy and what not. They were selling them. And for a while I could only find Oswald! So who knows what they have now.
It goes by so fast you miss it----at 5:26, they re-traced an old shot that looks like it's from around 1940 or so. You can see his proportions are a little different and his overall form is rounder and "squishier", like all their animation was 15 years earlier. Then it cuts to the next shot and it's back to the harder, more streamlined 50s design.(You'll notice they didn't bother to change his smile to a scowl to fit with the new scene---guess they figured it was so quick no one would see it.)
@Marbles471 It was likley just someone using a different style as they had multiple animators that worked on these. You notice that but not the scene where Donald has the boat in his hand and yet no sign of Chip and Dale on deck? It don't matter for either becuase it just a good old cartoon flubs and all.
The chipmunks thing is a flub. But that quick shot is definitely not just a style difference. The differences between Donald's 1940 and 1956 designs are pretty distinct (eye spacing, body shape, etc) and so is the difference in the texture of the animation---30s and early 40s stuff was very rounded and soft, and it got more streamlined and solid over time until by the 50s everything felt harder and more compact. That quick shot is definitely retraced from an earlier one.
I'm confused why they would have made a "standard" version with regular titles in the first place, since Disney cartoons had almost no television life until the 1980s. But whatever the reason, that's what ended up on the VHS release we've always known until now.
Sure, they were shown on Wonderful World of Disney and Mickey Mouse Club, but never with the titles included. Mickey Mouse Club only lasted a few years, and WWoD usually sliced and diced the cartoons to mix them into new material. In terms of being shown intact and on their own, I don't think Disney cartoons were shown much at all until the '80s.
(That's the extreme opposite of WB, whose old cartoons used to be EVERYWHERE on TV.)
Yes I think Dale hitting Chip is unique to this episode. However Dale is the star of two of the best episodes in addition to this one: Chicken in the Rough and Test Pilot Donald. Although he doesn't take the lead, he's always creative and independant.

Chip: He's coming after us!
Dale: *pulls out a pair of scissors* Don't worry skipper. *Donald realizes his sail was cut out, goes to the canoe*
Chip: Look what he's doing now.
Dale: *pulls out a hand drill* Calm yourself, Captain.
*Donald sinks due to all the holes in the canoe, goes to the rowboat.*
Chip: He's coming in a rowboat.
Dale: *Points to screws next to him* Don't worry, the situation is well in hand.
*Donald's rowboat falls apart*

@Marbles471 I understand what you mean, the artists and the colorist colored back ground a bit softer so you get a better sense of depth.
That is normal in real life it happens the same.
You can see the same in nature or in cities etc
The artists creates by soften the colors and outlines, also more speed in the background when needed.
