In the description it says Gen Choi's successor is Grandmaster Park. This is not true. General Choi never named a successor, although he had a few last words about Chang Ung that weren't necessarily clear. And a few years before that desiring his son to take over before all the political deception that forced Gen Choi to expel his own son from the ITF.
The only thing bad about this video is the music that ACTAULY PLAYS IN THE VID! And its more like a VHS tape than a DVD U must fast forward and rewind like a VHS tape, no chapters! :O( other than that its an excellent historical teaching tool for younger students. or in papaiosif there is simplly no help! so sad, so sorry!
subak, taekkyon, and shotakan karate were the main styles he used to make Taekwondo. but he used only what he needed from them and developed it into on big new art that combined the arts of korea and karate that had been studied during the japanies invasion. good video:)
@jiggahippo shotokan was the basis of TKD end of story. simple as that and some taekkyon blends...then adopt them to korean people and mentality but keeping the karate core... this is how TKD was made.
@papaiosif AWE! my student, who is truley stupid? the man thats puts out the trap or the dumbass that falls in it? And ponder this my lil one. WHO CARES!
Many MMA fighters have a taekwondo backround e.g Bass Rutten and Cung le and many K-1 fighters like Park Yong Soo,Kenji Ozak and Serkan Yilmaz who can pull of even the fanciet of kicks. And taekwondo uses the hand elbow, knee all that stuff even self defense for blue belt and higher so many instead of saying tkd sucks you should know your role and SHUT YOUR MOUTH.
@smokinthepot u looked into it? and now u have knowldge to say "it" has no knock out power? U obviously have not seen ITF fighting or trained in ITF so be nice and only talk about what u know.
It seems you know so much ! but did you know that Gen Choi gave the name Taekwondo, and it seems to me that you havent learned the proper respect in Taekwondo !!!
That is debatable. Gen. Choi claims he did, but Duk Sung Son claims he originated the name but Choi took credit for it. I guess we'll never know.
I do know this: Choi was notorious for taking credit for the work of others.
I respect those who deserve respect. Those in the ITF get into a tizzy whenever it is brought up that Choi was perhaps not as honorable as they like to think.
Much respect to Grandmaster Park Jong Soo! Being a student of Grandmaster Low Koon Lin (and his grandnephew too!), I really really appreciate the work that the Grandmasters have put in. And thanks for putting this video up too! Very inspirational!
...without these great people (yesterday's great Korean soldiers & today's great Taekwondo teachers), Taekwondo would not have widely spread across the world.
The main way to tell is to look for the way the technique is executed. All of the techniques should be the same- maybe with different names- but the execution should be different.
WTF TKD should look alot like traditional Karate, whereas ITF TKD has this crazy thing called the "Sine Wave" or the "Knee Spring". Basically, there's a sort of bouncy flow to it. It's hard to describe.
Your right i study Traditional ITF Taekwon-Do and it looks almost exactly like Old school Shotokan Karate. Th eversion that we do is before Gen. Choi added the sign wave thing
not trying to be smart or anything, but sine wave has always been present in tkd. the body weight naturally drops into a movement, when we step the body rises, and when we finish the step, it falls again, making the "sine wave".
General Choi began use of the name TAEKWON-DO in 1955. That name was nothing more than an umbrella name/certification for the various kwans; mudukwan, shidukwan, hapkido, &c. (very different styles) and later lead to the organization called the Korea Taekwon-Do Association. All the original masters were various/original kwans and continued their styles. Eventually, new practitioners came & learned a "Korean unarmed martial art" named Taekwon-Do which borrowed from all of these styles.

I can understand positive criticism with valid evidence to support an argument...
but I think its funy how easy it is for people to slate styles and practitioners...
What about yourself..
How hard do you work to make your art or inner being the best it can be...
Once you're perfect then maybe say something...

Other than adding the inefficient Sinewave and promoting Tae Kwon Do with black belts he took from Chung Do Kwan, Choi added nothing to Tae Kwon Do.
He may have been an idea man, but he certainly was not a teacher.
