You can't have deflation without a previous INFLATION. The money supply was BIG because the Fed was creating tons of credit out of nothing, and credit functions as a money substitute in our society. The people never HAD any credit, because they weren't saving. The disappearing of all the credit-money back into the black hold only made it apparent how poor we really are. You have to have SAVINGS to have credit, are Americans have neither. Inflating another bubble will NOT be good.
The dialogue also needs to be started on what to do AFTER the Fed is audited. There might be enough outrage to shut the Fed down but that's a HUGE maybe. Americans usually can't stay mad long enough to make a radical change like that. Once audit happens, maybe we should push for a "floor" on the reserve ratio. Deflation in steps can be good. They currently inflate the money at roughly 5%. If They reversed that to deflate at 5% then money would steadily gain value at the same rate it currently looses value. You are right about the character of the individual, but don't be swayed by isolated statements of Hoover. Hoover would have to be thought of as being a much more subtle, and governmentally experienced version of Carter--he was not able to see that his plans were overly elaborate, would be excessively interventionist, and would ultimately not solve the crisis at hand, unless they were part of some elaborate system, which could not be guaranteed (he was not reelected). Hoover was no Coolidge.

Deflation in steps can be good. They currently inflate the money at roughly 5%. If They reversed that to deflate at 5% then money would steadily gain value at the same rate it currently looses value. Just so long as they don't pull to much out to fast things only get better. Exept for interest rates would go up but that's a nessecary evil until the dollar rebounds.

See fractional reserve system. (Much of the money in the economy was backed by houses as collateral. When those houses weren't worth as much the money that represented that collateral wealth (which was circulating in the stock market) evaporated. When value disappears and the physical asset remains that is the very definition of deflation.

If they do that too much, they could really screw up the financial system, like what happened in 1929.

That, I suspect, is the idea.
If the economy needs inflating to keep going, it's going to crash the moment you stop inflating.
Right now the extra cash is being held by banks. The moment they start lending.. it will multiply.

Barney Frank is certainly a crank when it comes to economics. Inflation is a completely unsustainable policy, which is why we have such problems. The alternative to letting the free market come back is to destroy the currency itself.

yeah, you are correct. There is a good booklet called "Deflation and Liberty" which points out that endless inflation isn't a good thing and that deflation isn't to be feared after you have endlessly inflated a currency.

the best example in modern times about the benefits of deflation=computers. computers use to be enormous, very expensive to build, own, and operate. as technology advanced prices fell dramatically (price deflation) and everyone benefited.
what gov is trying to do is prevent further deflation of home values in order to save banks and their CDO/derivative schemes. Tom Woods describes this well in his book MELTDOWN

The bill is pretty simple. I don't see any reason to change it. We need a full account of what the federal reserve has been up to. Congressman Frank probably has something to hide. Or the Feds have something on him. Either way, he will try to alter it so that certain people can be protected from the audit. In any event, his semi-support of it is some good news I guess.

Barney doesn't understand basic economics. Inflation IS the increase in the money supply. Higher prices are the result of inflation. He need to be relieved of his duty asap.

Barney, by definition, Inflation is an increase in money supply. This has obviously happened. Higher prices are the result of Inflation. Higher prices are coming and there's no way the Fed can just pull that money from the economy or it will go kaboom. Sorry, you lack understanding of basic economics.
