  • The second hi hat lift in the first part of the phrase comes on the third base-drum stroke.

  • It was good they don't know what there talking about

  • This is 5.5/8

  • @800adam008 yup

  • Even though its not the correct beat, I still think its a pretty nice beat for the 11 time signature.

  • thats wrong by the way..nice try though

  • weak... sry dude!

  • DONT DO THIS OPEN HANDED??!?!?!?!?!?1 DO IT NORMAL MAYBE YOULL DO BETTER

  • this video sucks (i'm sorry damn)

  • @kvg4541 Or, does it?

  • the hat opens on the with the 1st and 3rd kick not in the 4th.

  • Watch my version of this.

  • not exactly perfect. get ur facts right bro

  • I was just trying to help you learn it. You're not going to perfect it by practicing the wrong beat.

  • I know, and I appreciate your help. I was just saying that I still get slack from people over this video, but I can play it now. take care.

  • I like what your doing but I think you have the wrong rhythm. It's more like this:

    Hihat opened on 1, 3, 6, 8, and 10.

    The bass is on 1, 2, 3, and 4

and the snare is on 9

  • Thanks, but I realize it's close, that's why I put attempt....yet I still get slack over a year later. ; )

  • @MikePostDrums You do realize you're on my friends list. Do you have any drumming videos?

  • Comment removed

  • @MikePostDrums Ahah you're that guy who downloads guitar pro tabs and converts them into awful sounding 8-bit tracks using drag and drop software... and then takes credit for it...

  • Comment removed

  • Don't think theres an open hihat on 10, just 1 3 6 and 8.

  • you're close keep groovin'

  • thats in 11/8 man. close, but not quite.

  • He'res some hints - don't accent the bass hits. Keep them all the same level. And you're not playing the rhythm correctly. The snare hit comes a little bit later. Because of this, you're not even playing the right time signature. Also, it might be easier to alternate your hands on the hat during this groove. Check the video on my page to see what i'm talking about

  • i would post a vid of me doing it, but my hats are just the shittiest things you ever heard. sabian b8's.

  • the first bass drum hit is the first note of the measure, you're putting an extra note in there (you have 11 eighth notes instead of 10), and the second hi hat is a beat late, but you're close.

  • That's really good mate. For a 5/4 (Depending on how you write it) polyrhythm with all legs and arm independence. Not to mention it's hell hard to get those four bass drums at the right tempo. Keep it up mate you're doing really well.

  • FAIL.....no offense, but thats not the groove...close

  • sounds great!

  • Thanks!

  • SUCK BALLS!!!

  • when i learned this lick, it really helped to write it down on paper and read it from there. it makes visualizing the beat much easier. give it a try! i know you haven't already! else you'd be playing it much more accurate!! hehe. you'll get it. so try writing the beat down in any form :D

  • there are videos on youtube that will tell you how to play this correctly

  • you are so close. you are one beat off on the hi hat! keep up the good work!

  • Thanks for the comment.

  • yeah man, its really close.. just gotta keep that 5/8 solid on the hi hat opening on the 1 and 3rd beats!

  • Wow Ken....people aren't being very civil on here. Don't worry, I still get at least one comment every other day from people telling me how much I suck or how wrong I am.....I just get used to it!

  • Thanks for the support!

  • I fucking hate snobby fanboys. Don't get me wrong I love tool, but I can't stand perfectionist asses that go around spouting dirt left and right and having opinions about everything.

Seriously.... give the kid a break, at least he has the balls to try something.

  • oh man...when I read this comment I agreed SO much that I wished I could hug you...

  • polymetrix u are a lonley and misersable person, and my spelling no matter what u want to say about it will not make u feel better about being a bitter asshole.

  • Sorry, but I can't read what you're saying. Grow up.

  • you need to open the hi-hat a 8 beat erlier. but that beat that your playing was actually pretty cool. so yeah nearly there lol but don't a little more practise and you'll get that perfect mate.

  • Thanks for the positive comment, most people leave nasty comments because it's not right.

  • thats wrong sorry

  • That's wrong

  • why did u feel the need to show us this? it's not even right man

  • dude not saying u suck or anything. i was just telling you that there is a video on youtube that teaches it. perhaps u could go check it out. i saved it udner my bookmarks.

  • the base drum is wrong too. err there's a video on youtube by the original drummer teaching people how to do the groove you're attemping to do.

  • Well, this was my attempt, didn't say it was perfect.

  • It's not imperfect, it's a completely different beat. Are you retarded?

  • Maybe check out my other vids before making such rude comments.

That's why I put attempt in the title.

  • You attempted a completely different beat. This video should be titles "Danny Carey's Lateralus Groove FAIL."

  • LOL, I like that.

  • Yep, I checked and sure enough....you don't have any videos posted. I guess that settles it.

  • Open hi hat on one and three, WITH the bass on one, two, three and four. Then, open hit hat on 6 and 8, WITH bass on 6 and 8. Snare is on 1, but not at the start. Shoo. *wipes sweat from brow*

  • yeh its on the down beat on 1

  • the timing of the open high hats is wrong. good try otherwise

  • Thanks,"missed it by THAT much!"

  • good job, try working on that bass a little more, needs a tiny bit of work.:)

  • nice to see an open handed drummer. I wish I had started that way, its very hard to learn after years of cross.

  • I'm a lefty, but I started playing the bass drum with my right foot(because most drumsets are set up that way. Playing open does have some disadvantages though, I had to move my floor toms to my left side so it's easier to ride on them.

  • wrong on the beat man but ur style is ok

  • not totally correct.

  • Very good attempt, and you played cleanly, which is also good.

But, the first thing i can tell you is-

You're playing the second hit-hat release along with the last bass drum note.

Try putting the second hat release one eighth-note before the last bass drum beat.

Hope that helps ya some, and keep up the good work!! This poly-rhythm is very tricky coordination.

  • Thanks, yeah, I realized that after the fact. The hi-hat is supposed to open on the first and third bass drum. I got it all figured out now, but I still can't play it quite as fast as the song.

  • well, that's not exactly what Danny plays...

    but interesting beat! :P

  • Thanks for the polite comment.

  • wrong...

  • Not half bad. As someone stated before, playing anything Danny Carey and posting it is ballsy. Points for doing just that.

  • Thanks for the positive comment.

  • great attempt! would sound fine to a non-drummer

  • Thanks! I can play it much better now.

  • at least u got the balls to play danny carey stuff and post it on youtube :)

  • Thank you, I'll take that as a compliment.

  • BUHAHAHHAA!

  • wrong

  • Hence, my attempt.

  • yep you are quite right. And because of that it then brings the whole piece into the wrong time signature.

And yeh it's not completely wrong. Just that 1 hi hat bit. Get that sorted and you will be laughing

  • also, (sorry)

You are actually drumming in 11/16, or 11/8

  • Whatever the time signature is, I was surprised that my feet were doing two separate things at the same time, lol.

I know the second time(every measure) I open my hihat it's a 1/16 note behind, but I didn't realize it was completely wrong. Thanks for being polite though, honestly.

  • In a german magazine Danny was interviewed and gave some drum tabs showing this part of lateralus in 10/8. which makes sense because most of the song is in 5/4. peace

  • Hi. The way you are using the hi hat opening and shutting is completley wrong. I know your saying it isn't perfect so fair doo's. Just pointing it out incase you did'nt notice.

The hi hat pattern - Your stick should fall on these - 'open open, shut open open, shut open open, shut open open, shut. ...etc. Same patter whole way through

  • greatttttttttttttttttt i love it.

  • Thanks Mom.

  • wow, you got around to that pretty quick. nice job!

  • Well, thanks to you, but I still can't play that polyrhythm in Eulogy yet. I'd like to learn the polyrhythm in The Pot too.

  • oh man, I haven't even tried that one yet... Danny sure makes it difficult to play his songs. About Eulogy, if you just write it out and play it slow over and over, I guarantee you'll get it.

  • It still needs work, but it's not bad. Thanks to wildbill1240 for breaking it down. I'd never attempted this before cause I thought it would be to difficult.
