@MikePostDrums Ahah you're that guy who downloads guitar pro tabs and converts them into awful sounding 8-bit tracks using drag and drop software... and then takes credit for it...
He'res some hints - don't accent the bass hits. Keep them all the same level. And you're not playing the rhythm correctly. The snare hit comes a little bit later. Because of this, you're not even playing the right time signature. Also, it might be easier to alternate your hands on the hat during this groove. Check the video on my page to see what i'm talking about
the first bass drum hit is the first note of the measure, you're putting an extra note in there (you have 11 eighth notes instead of 10), and the second hi hat is a beat late, but you're close.
That's really good mate. For a 5/4 (Depending on how you write it) polyrhythm with all legs and arm independence. Not to mention it's hell hard to get those four bass drums at the right tempo. Keep it up mate you're doing really well.
when i learned this lick, it really helped to write it down on paper and read it from there. it makes visualizing the beat much easier. give it a try! i know you haven't already! else you'd be playing it much more accurate!! hehe. you'll get it. so try writing the beat down in any form :D
actually poly & deathoverme you both are retarded because it sais 'ATTEMPT' meaning it was ATTEMPTED wether it sounds like the real deal or something completely different. and the original drummer who wrote this 'danny carey' is not and never will be teaching how to do this on youtube it is in fact another drummer doing the tutorial, who is quite good btw
Wow Ken....people aren't being very civil on here. Don't worry, I still get at least one comment every other day from people telling me how much I suck or how wrong I am.....I just get used to it!
I fucking hate snobby fanboys. Don't get me wrong I love tool, but I can't stand perfectionist asses that go around spouting dirt left and right and having opinions about everything.
Seriously.... give the kid a break, at least he has the balls to try something.
polymetrix u are a lonley and misersable person, and my spelling no matter what u want to say about it will not make u feel better about being a bitter asshole.
you need to open the hi-hat a 8 beat erlier. but that beat that your playing was actually pretty cool. so yeah nearly there lol but don't a little more practise and you'll get that perfect mate.
dude not saying u suck or anything. i was just telling you that there is a video on youtube that teaches it. perhaps u could go check it out. i saved it udner my bookmarks.
Open hi hat on one and three, WITH the bass on one, two, three and four. Then, open hit hat on 6 and 8, WITH bass on 6 and 8. Snare is on 1, but not at the start. Shoo. *wipes sweat from brow*
I'm a lefty, but I started playing the bass drum with my right foot(because most drumsets are set up that way. Playing open does have some disadvantages though, I had to move my floor toms to my left side so it's easier to ride on them.
Thanks, yeah, I realized that after the fact. The hi-hat is supposed to open on the first and third bass drum. I got it all figured out now, but I still can't play it quite as fast as the song.
Whatever the time signature is, I was surprised that my feet were doing two separate things at the same time, lol.
I know the second time(every measure) I open my hihat it's a 1/16 note behind, but I didn't realize it was completely wrong. Thanks for being polite though, honestly.
In a german magazine Danny was interviewed and gave some drum tabs showing this part of lateralus in 10/8. which makes sense because most of the song is in 5/4. peace
Hi. The way you are using the hi hat opening and shutting is completley wrong. I know your saying it isn't perfect so fair doo's. Just pointing it out incase you did'nt notice.
The hi hat pattern - Your stick should fall on these - 'open open, shut open open, shut open open, shut open open, shut. ...etc. Same patter whole way through
oh man, I haven't even tried that one yet... Danny sure makes it difficult to play his songs. About Eulogy, if you just write it out and play it slow over and over, I guarantee you'll get it.
It still needs work, but it's not bad. Thanks to wildbill1240 for breaking it down. I'd never attempted this before cause I thought it would be to difficult.
The second hi hat lift in the first part of the phrase comes on the third base-drum stroke.

Speed it up a bit. Kinda slow. otherwise, its exactly perfect.

not exactly perfect. get ur facts right bro

I was just trying to help you learn it. You're not going to perfect it by practicing the wrong beat.

I know, and I appreciate your help. I was just saying that I still get slack from people over this video, but I can play it now. take care.
janken919 2 years ago
I like what your doing but I think you have the wrong rhythm. It's more like this:
Hihat opened on 1, 3, 6, 8, and 10.
The bass is on 1, 2, 3, and 4
and the snare is on 9
SplinkyStudiosFilms 2 years ago
Thanks, but I realize it's close, that's why I put attempt....yet I still get slack over a year later. ; )

wrong on the beat man but ur style is ok
bask3t 3 years ago
not totally correct.
timmotjo17 3 years ago
Very good attempt, and you played cleanly, which is also good.
But, the first thing i can tell you is-
You're playing the second hit-hat release along with the last bass drum note.
Try putting the second hat release one eighth-note before the last bass drum beat.
Hope that helps ya some, and keep up the good work!! This poly-rhythm is very tricky coordination.
Thannatos14 3 years ago 2
