I remember being so excited about discovering bands like this back in the early 80s. The Cure, JD, Depeche Mode, Smiths, Banshees, Cocteau Twins-all still my favorites.

Well I am a Hong Kong-er, born and lived in here. IMO Siouxsie was trying to "mock" about the stereotype and racism that people had towards the Asians/foreigns.
I dont think she meant to discriminated Hong Kong!! Or else-- why she visited HK in 1980s, and even appeared in a local popular TV programme?
(for additional information: at 1978, Hong Kong was still a colony of UK =] )
The song is written from the perspective of a sympathetic if not particularly knowledgeable Anglo-Saxon youth appalled by the violent racist behavior exhibited by anti-immigrant skin-heads at the Hong Kong Garden Chinese takeaway in London.
"I remember wishing that I could be like Emma Peel from The Avengers and kick all the skinheads' heads in, because they used to mercilessly torment these people for being foreigners. It made me feel so helpless, hopeless and ill." Siouxsie Sioux.
hong kong garden. i wished they wrote this song in Hong Kong though.warm support from Hong Kong fan! When they released this song, I was not yet born!
I think it's more about ignorance than racism... I just checked out the lyrics and noticed the yen/yuan confusion, wonder if it's voluntary. Also, I think it's China seen from the western point of view: "Chop suey", "bodies small in size", "Confuscius".... *sigh* Cliches die hard. For instance, everybody knows French people all ride bicycles with a baguette under the arm, a beret and that silly striped pull-over. AND grow a moustache. I'm gonna write the sequel song..."PARIS GARDEN" !
This song is outstanding and even though it contains some obvious cliches, I find it in no way offensive or degrading. As a matter of fact, the mention of Yen vs. Yuan is really of no consequence being that Japan based its currency (Yen) on the Chinese model, which has always been called Yuan and subsequently adopted the same character to symbolize it. I believe that this occurred in the late 19th or early 20th century when Japan did not yet have a centralized currency.
ditto...I can't stop liking them no matter what...they've got a big amount of real good songs...so I may have that one fave song of theirs but I know that's not the only on ethat I know is good
I remember this song and video from the late 1970s. This was the song that launched Siouxsie & the Banshees, one of my favorite groups of the time. Great times back then in the second half of the 70s and the first half of the 80s. Siouxsie & the Banshees were right in there and they were really great, too. No doubt about Siouxsie & the Banshees being a very powerful influence on both sides of the Atlantic on the music at that time and for some time afterward.
This reminds me of when I was small and my mum used to plays songs by Siouxie and the Banshees in the car on the way to and from school, she still loves their music, but for some reason she barely ever listens to them now, I don't know why.
to puffpuffyogi: I had the same issue. I love Siouxie + crew, just had to simply let it go!!! It made the lyrics work. I'm sure Siouxsie knew, but had to go with it.
And then sing along to =) I can'tdriv (I'm 14 for crying out loud!), but whenever I'm in the car, I put this song on, turn it up, and sing along. Unless my dad's in the car, thenI'd never hear the end of it =(
are you kidding? my birthday is may 28th!!! omg i knew the love i have for them was meant to be... i had a shitty 20th birthday but now i feel awesome, thanks
