Loved the vid! im just about to do this to a cbr400rrl nc29, could you give me some details on the paints that you used and what you used to degrease/clean the frame and engine?
@Carcass32 Thanks. The frame etc where all professionally powder coated which despite the cost I recommend as any sprayed or brushed paint isn't going to be tough enough or a very good finish. For the smaller bits that I wanted a satin (not glossy finish) I used Hammerite Smooth Satin Black Spray, Plasticote BBQ matt black for the disc rotors and something called Competition Black for the few bits I wanted a glossy black. More details on honda-forums com in Restores section pg3
@BikerGuy95 Did you watch the full vid? I treated them myself with some Avesta pickling gel a mate got hold for me then used wirewheel and autosol to finish off.
I've since tried some of that hammerite rust beater joe public can buy and its crap in comparison, no strength compared to the industrial stuff which I guess you might be able to buy from a metal merchants but not 100% sure
Can't believe you fucking powdercoated those stunning WHITE rims and made them black! They white rims are so much better looking! Btw i fooking love that single sided swingarm!
hi i am new to bike here i am about to buy a bike which is the same as yours but in singapore the bike you post from video name after RVF but yours name after VFR may i know what is the different
@taiwanlong The RVF was the replacement to the VFR, very similar in most respects but you get upside down forks and a more upto date (early 1990's) style fairing with flush headlight. Otherwise a few tweaks here and there but in general the same but nicer.
I'm about to start rebuilding (or rather restoring) mine ... its an '88 nc24. Hope its not going to need to much work to at least get it going. Did a trade exchange on it and apparently it ran fine when it last ran ... 6 years ago!
@ketchup1991 Can't remember exactly but the powder coating was about £200 or so (I used a reputable place that I knew would do a good job even if it cost a bit more than average), maybe £200-300 on bolts, brake lines, paint and a consumables (plugs, air filter etc..) then the fairing/rearsets etc.. are hard to say as it depends on ebay or contacts.
Oh yeah, £100 ish for chain and sprockets...the rest is time and effort mostly
Great job on the restoration. I love watching vids like this, and that bike turned out absolutley stunning. Whoever bought it is one very lucky individual.
wow its rare to find good rebuild videos that dont include ridiculous mods, you should be really proud of yourself. i will be using alot of your advice while i rebuild a new bike next month. still need to decide what i want to get!
@hagardestroyer23 Think it was actually a Thunderace regulator as those were cheaper on ebay but fairly certain most R1/thunderace and similar bikes in the Yamaha range all have v similar regulators.
I'm sorry but you could tell who the author and title of music that you used in the clip? Although not a secret, I admire your work:) I myself am a fan of Honda VFR400 NC30.
@MadCyberFox This classical (and royalty free) piece is called Air on a G String by Bach although most people (older than 30 or so) in the UK will remember it as the Hamlet cigar advert which I'm sure will be on youtube somewhere and worth watching if you've not seen them before
@theblackbmxer Music is royalty free which will help when revenue share kicks in and while not your taste (or mine if im honest) its not shit rap or r'n'b like most bike videos ;-p
re: the speed of the pics. at the time of upload max length was 10mins and I had so many pics to try fit in that even after pruning loads I had to make them go that speed
@1sick93 - Bikes have no weight limits that I'm aware off but I think its about 170kg in weight (DRY). As for the MPG not a clue, i ride bikes for fun, fill up after 100 miles or so and pay what the pump says
YOU SOLD IT!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! PS, awesome and thank you for sharing your vid with us. every NC30 owner is probably a bit teary at the moment, I personally am going for a ride, even though it's dark out and the work day is just around the corner
gorgeous job mate. got my own project NC30, but a newbie so think will be an ongoing one! check out 400geybike.info, i think the guys over there would like to see this and also commend you on the work! awsome... after 5mins i really started getting a bad case of the green eyed monster!
@richhemmings - Hopefully most of the longer term members on 400greybike will remember it as I'm a lapsed member there (since i sold the NC30) and the long rebuild thread on there once but think it got culled in a forum move. But check out honda-forums c0m in the Kermits NC30 Restoration thread (page 2 of Restores and Rebuilds section on there in its entirety as thats the original thread and chat as it went along....think you might enjoy the read with the 230+ pictures still working :)
@richhemmings You are a newbie to projects so you brought a V4, gear driven, Double overhead cam engined 400cc?!?! I think you should have gone for a single cylinder 125....
This video is truly amazing, i took the time to watch the whole of it and realised that it must of been some hell of an experience to restore this bike back to its original but 'better' state. Must be my favourite motorcycle of all time and must say well done on having the time to do this. Regards, Tribute123
your a genius, ive just a bought a vfr 400 today its not bad for a 21 year old bike but ill do my best in restoring it. but the back end is far to low for my liking so if possible could you perhaps tell me who did the modified linkages for you thanks.. also i no this sounds really dumb but the one ive bought has the 33bhp restrictor kit on an when i took it for a test ride earlier it seemed pretty gutless my cagiva mito was alot quicker so im does the kit restrict everythink? its comin off neway
@2Mcloven Fairly sure it had BT92's on although one might have been another tyre in the BT range but I forget now. I've just checked my normal supplier (bct motorcycles) have BT92 and BT90 Pro's which are a knew one to me but just the name sounds like they might be softer than the 92's.
@zx6rtt - If I didn't sell it, I couldn't have bought the XR250R (see other vids) and then the CRF450R supermoto.
I'm finding while the end result of getting bikes back to tidy looking is enjoyable, the journey getting there is more so even though at times when things go wrong it might not feel like it
@redgeracer23 - I didn't lower mine, I raised it by 35mm. To higher it (or lower it) you modify (or get someone to modify) the rear linkage. You can see both my modified one and original one (which is the black one) in about 7:45 into the video. The change to the linkage is very subtle and probably a case of moving the holes less than 5mm but this is amplified by the geometry of the shock linkage.
The Black/Gold is my rear shock remote reservoir and not related to raising the ride height.
The lower linkage is the modified one which if you look closely the holes to the left are slightly more to the right than the standard black linkage. If you were trying to lower your bike (an NC30 is already pretty low slung then the hole would need to goto the left a bit but there's not much metal left to play with. The important bit is the original hole needs filling with a blank and welding otherwise your asking for trouble

Yeah sad to sell her but had enjoyed a good few rides on it and this was >2 years after purchase which is a fair while in my bike terms + I got bored not having anything to tinker with. As I also have a fireblade I just wasn't riding the NC enough so when the time came (Sept 08) I decided to buy a different type of bike as a second bike....an XR250R which is now also rebuilt (see its video)
really interesting, nice project mate
