I was on that flight and we did take off at first. Then about 20 minutes into the flight we had to turn around and go back to JFK due to some kind of mechanical problems. They wouldn't say exactly what. The passengers were screaming like crazy and wanted a flight! They did give us hotel accommodations and we left the next morning. Better safe than sorry! @slapshot68

but passengers must understand that all cancellations and delays are accepted (when there is a good reason of course) at the time they buy a ticket. It is not just buying a seat on the plane, is a complex contract that almost no budy reads. Even oversold flights are supported buy it... but passengers will always say "no body told me that"

I was there that day. It was the first time I was going to Santo Domingo, my first vacation in years and after our flight took off in the morning they made us turn around and land back at JFK. They kept saying the flight was delayed until eventually they cancelled it and put us up in hotels near the airport. We had to leave the next morning and the flight still left with an hour delay!!! I missed 1 night that I had booked at a hotel in La Romana. Airline made it up by giving me xtra miles

For the record, one of the ladies said that she is traveling with five children and that it is abusive treatment of the airline because they have being there since 5am. She also adds that becuase they closed her apartment an has no family in NY she decided to leave to DR. In other words, if they change the flight she has no where to go with 5 children.

American Airlines, besides charging exuberant amounts for flights, also provides the US-DR service with it's oldest fleet.Old planes and mediocre service, that's why I fly with Delta or Jetblue. It's a shame.

That is so true. I am Dominican as well and used to travel to Santo Domingo in American's old planes. They are very unsafe and I hate the service since they cancel flights as they feel like it. I now fly Continental. The airline offers me better treatment, newer aircraft, and on time flights.
