@pvmsboy dude call make the call its easier now dont get me wrong if u had to send a message without anyone hearing it on ur end or if u dont want the other person ur talking to checheck his voice mail texting would be the answer.
@flacksuage if you receive emails on your phone and you don't reply to them, then why do you receive emails on the phone at all ??
I use swype mostly to reply to emails.
Also what if the person you r text messaging is working and the work doesn't allow him to answer personal phone calls while on duty? What's actually my case, so if friends call me, I have to reject, as if they send me a txt, I can reply no problem.
And iPhone is getting swype soon if not beta available already, just like google is making it's own Siri (which is way more useful than swype). So in the long run this stuff won't even matter.
@07PamPer07 i own a android too im just saying they gave swype the advantage because i type just as fast as swype, and sometimes even faster, on my old iphone.
This is all wrong. I can type in my iphone 4 WAYY faster than that guy. Hell, I could type faster on a BlackBerry... That guy obviously was an iphone noob and an android fanboy. I'm no apple fanboy myself, but this is totally bias...
@onee uhmmm works great for me. This company did NOT get paid to cheat, I experienced this the first time I used swype. So much faster than just using a normal keyboard. I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm using a lower end droid too, optimus v. Haters going to hate I guess.
I am not an Apple fan boy. I have a Samsung! Swype f@cking sucks! They obviously have written this text a coupel of times. And second of all the word recognition is off which makes type iPhone (normal keyboard for Touchscreen phones) way slower. I bet TechCrunch got paid for this. Oh and @itsaamirul is right. The guy is purposely trying to type slower while the Swype guy is moving his fingers way faster. Swype isn't faster in many chases especially for newbies it is way slower. So F@CK Swype!
Well I really, like my iPhone 4 but it doesn't have swype! If it did that will be awesome! And wtf ! The nookcolor doesn't have swype and its an android ! but I'm spool freaking happy that the streak 7 does! I'm getting that for christmas! Well , I kinda know I'm getting it for christmas because I saw it in the box when my grandma ordered it(:
Jay it works no matter how big your fingers are I thought that at first and was so wrong you don't have to be exact which is the awesome part somehow as long as your close it gets it right I love it and I have awful pudgy fingers lol. however I traded in my prevail for the warp and hate this T9 k or whatever
@ColdAsHe11 because world records are based on very specific contexts. try to swype your way through when you're on a bus, see how great it works. I was fascinated about this keyboard, I bought it and I still keep it installed. However, if you do take the time to make SwiftX Key learn your sms's and emails, the two can't be compared. My times (landscape view, lg optimus black) are 1,3 to 1,4 faster with SwiftX than with Swype. And I'm not a particularly fast typer.
@ColdAsHe11 I don't believe it. The simple physics of the matter oppose it -- you have to move your finger farther to use Swype than to use a multitouch OSK. On the assumption that you can move your fingers equally quickly and equally accurately independent of the input method you're using, the shortest distance wins, and being able to use multitouch automatically divides the average distance by 2.
I really don't care if you believe it or not. I doubt the people who are in charge of the Guinness world records care either. Ask Siri what the record is, maybe you'll believe it then.
@codahighland I don't see how the distance is all that much shorter; you're touching the same letters. Regardless, you're only thinking about distance in two dimensions. When you're pressing each letter individually, there's an up/down distance as well. That's going to increase the distance for non-gesture-based keyboards. Additionally, you have to consider momentum. Drawing a continuous line is going to result in better momentum than pressing individual letters.
@BCWhims On a single-touch screen you would be right -- on such a device Swype would be INCREDIBLE. But on a multi-touch screen, you can bring multiple fingers into play, allowing you to (1) be in motion towards the second keystroke while you're still pressing the first letter, and (2) reduce the maximum distance that a finger has to travel -- that is, every letter is going to be closer to one finger than the other. Imagine typing the word "zoo" and you'll see why it's shorter.
@codahighland I misunderstood. I thought you were saying it was shorter when typing with one finger, and it's cut in half when using two. I generally hold my phone and type with one hand anyway. I'll admit that Swype isn't ideal for something like "zoo," but you probably won't run into too many words that are like that.
@BCWhims On the contrary, consider: "pan" "men" "jam" "worn" "lend" or any word containing "qu". QWERTY may be lopsided but it was still designed with the intent of making a typist alternate hands even if it doesn't completely succeed. And then there's people like me who use THREE fingers on one hand to type while holding the phone in the other hand.
Aside, to disbelievers: The record has been broken; see video dC44zs3TNGU (might be in the sidebar here)
@codahighland (Actually, four fingers if you count that I use my thumb for the space bar, and I wrap my left thumb around to drive the shift key as well.)
@codahighland I'm not saying the words don't exist, but QWERTY definitely favors the left hand. From the Wikipedia "QWERTY" article: "thousands of English words can be spelled using only the left hand, while only a couple of hundred words can be typed using only the right hand. In addition, most typing strokes are done with the left hand in the QWERTY layout." Also: There was another Swype record at 25.94 seconds.
@codahighland Being able to use both hands is nice, but QWERTY is sort of a lopsided layout. You're not really getting twice the speed since your left hand is going to be doing more work. It's interesting that you mention Dvorak, because I think its effects would be more noticeable on a touchscreen keyboard.
@BCWhims You're right, though, about the lack of a need for an actual "touch" action. That simplifies the movements by allowing you to maintain pressure, and being a one-fingered input method allows you to hold the device steady with the other hand. These are of course benefits in terms of ease of use, which is a contributing factor to speed.
@BCWhims But I believe the current apparent strength of Swype is similar to switching to Dvorak -- the physics and ergonomics don't actually help THAT much but the time spent retraining will increase your speed regardless of what method you're using.
just tried on my 3gs.... destroyed the swype time. (including the phone not automatically saying "Swype" but changing it to "swipe" and me going back and fixing that.....
This video is crap. The person typing on the iPhone has to be the slowest two finger iPhone typer I have ever seen. I typed out the paragraphs on my iPhone and finished about 4 seconds before the person using Swipe in the video did. This video is a straight up lie.
I agree that Swype is much better than the iPhone keyboard, but the in this video is the iPhone person is really slow at typing (I type about 4x as fast) and the Swype person is total MLG at using that Swype keyboard.
gingerbread 2.3 us the best to my Optimus 3D. But by an accident i got some arrows at the bottom of the screen, and cant get em away again.... help :p
I just beat the Swype one with my iPhone. I had one typo, on the word "reasonable", which I returned to and fixed about a second before the phone on the left finished.
Ive seen people on iPhones type almost as fast as the swype guy. and by almost I mean, they would be behind a letter or two. this guy just doesn't know a QWERTY keyboard xD
Ive seen people on iPhones type almost as fast as the swype guy. and by almost I mean, they would be behind a letter or two. this guy just doesn't know a QWERTY keyboard xD
The guy on the iphone should be using one hand. I thought the whole point of swype was to give you the ability to type quickly while drinking a Xtra Large coke!
This is the most biased test I've ever seen. The guy purposefully makes mistakes on the iPhone to make it take more time. I compared this test with my own test on my iPod Touch. It took the guy using Swype 39 seconds and it took me on my iPod 42 seconds. Sure, it's slightly faster to use Swype, but not 15 seconds faster.
this is BS....i know typing with swype can be be fast, but typing on IOS devices isnt THAT SLOW.....i can type way faster than that guy...and all you need to do to get a period is space twice in IOS
I used this method for texting my girlfriend the other day but instead of saying i was going for a walk i accidently sent a message saying i was going for a wank so be careful what you Swype
I've had both android and they both are great operating systems but after having both I like android more due to open sources and a larger variety of phones to choose from I play games scoot on my I phone so I got the courteous play for me its better than iphone
for those who just dont like the idea - the vid shows BOTH being slow.. The speed depends greatly on the person, so two different people texting with 2 diff methods wont prove anything. but if you look at the phyics tho.. swype/shape you dont lift your finger and you dont have to press space, if you are fast at tapping you can be faster at swyping. Dont be an old dog, learn new tricks : ) tip - swype with thumb
@Cheesetasetsgood thats because any word you "tap" will be added to dictionary as a word automatically, double tap on "wellllllllllll" to highlight it then press swype button to delete it : )
@GhettoNinjaMan You just need to improve typing then. There have been numerous studies on the advantages of typing versus physically writing and typing wins hands down everytime.
iphone has shapewriter that does the same thing - you just "swipe" in the shapewriter app and then import it into a text or email or whatever - you don't need to change platforms to get this - don't let these other morons with no tech knowledge make you think there is only the one option
I tried Swype and I know how to use it, but for some reason me not picking up my finger between each letter seemed to screw me up bad! I couldn't do it as easy as everyone else apparently! lol
The point is, when you're really good at something; you can get REALLY good at it [ie. type 25 words in 7 seconds with swype vs 25 words in 10 seconds with the iphone's stock keyboard]
Some people will do it faster with Swype, some will do it faster with the stock keyboard; it's all about personal preference. You wanna know something absolutely shit in general and has nothing to do with preference? ; beiber.
@d0zris I typed with a different keyboard (won't name it so that people don't believe I'm advertising anything) and I did it faster than swype by three seconds after the first try. :)
@d0zris Dude, no one types 25 words in 7 seconds on a full QWERTY keyboard. that's around 250 WPM. Come on man, do some simple 4th grade math before you sell this bullshit.
re:Swype, i think it's a nice gimmick and looks cool, but i don't think it's anything beyond that. IT'S NOT THAT FAST. really. and the only reason android users are so jizzed up about it is because iPhone has the best touch keyboard on the market since the 2G (remember when Steve Ballmer laughed off the iPhone touch keyboard, and then was proven very wrong). Nobody could beat it. OK I admit, Swype is new. Somewhat cool. But it's not better. Nor is it considerably that more efficient.
Total B.S. I Have an Iphone 4 and wife has a Moto Atrix. I'm well experienced on swype and IOS text app. I can type the EXACT message that is in this video on the iphone in half the time of the swype. I can start the video at :15 and type the same message and be done before this person finishes typing "reasonable effort" including the same punctuation. They can immitate but not recreate! iOS is way more user friendly than the droid OS. I Hate APPLE but as long as I can Jailbreak I'M IN!
I still typed this faster, and i even forgot what to type and had to wait for the swype guy to continue so i could remember what to type. plain and simple, YOUR NEVER GOING TO TYPE FASTER WITH 1 FINGER THAN 2
Just like on a regular keyboard, a 2 finger typist will not type faster than someone who used all 10 properly.
Yeah, I agree. that iphone user is SLOW because even i can type the same speed i can on my desktop, 70-80wpm. my ipod touch speed is about 50-60. But, being an android user now, I can say i can type a lot faster than 60wpm with swype. Because you can move your hand fast, without even touching 3 letters of the word your spelling out, and it STILL gets it correct. Difference: How fast can you move your hand and click a key vs how fast can you draw. One less motion, Click. So, must be faster
While I'm still playing with Swipe, I took a screenshot of what it was they were trying to write, and i two-tumbbed the message almost twice as fast as either of them did... I'm all for new ways of texting, but I have yet to see anyone swype faster than someone who is average speed two-thumber.
@bloodhownd Not at all, in fact, i own two android operated devices. One is for my work and one is a personal device. I dislike apple and its company policies, i would never buy iphone. Swype sucks because it is simply not reliable, atleast for a person like me. Sure, it may look cool at first but i personally felt that a normal qwerty keyboard is wonderful and is less error prone. But i guess that depends on who is using it as well, i simply stated my opinion.
I just got the android 2 yesterday, and had the iphone before hand. I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE this swipe feature, it makes me want to text more, unlike with iphone i tried texting since it took forever.
I tried swype for the 1st time yesterday and really really liked it I mean I still had a hard time with it lol but it will take time getting used to it right? :)
Well, I had an Evo 4g that had swype.. It's amazing!!! But I had to sale it because I needed the money. Now I have an iPhone 4, got a little extra money and decided to buy one. It's safe to say I miss android.
This is a 100% shit test. I have an iPhone 4 currently, but my friend has a Droid X, and Swype is making me seriously consider selling my iPhone, dropping ATT and going to Verizon with a Droid.
@MrCj822 Be careful with android based phone im about to sell mine for an iphone. so tired of all the force closes lol. cool thing about iOS is that it works >.<. Plus apple sends you brand new phones instead of refurbished ones if something goes wrong.
Garbage. Every time the iPhone user typed a period they didn't hit double spacebar for instant period and the swype users was automatically inserted. Do a real test idiots.
Saying the iphone user in the video is slower than the average iphone user is pretty retarded. This demo. You can tell both users were going about the same speed which is what you need for this to actually show which one is better. Doing the same demo. with two people texting three times as fast, will end up with the same result.
Poor representation: SWYPE is easier, and more often than not, faster, than regular typing... But both the people in this are slow as molasses. The average iPhone user would have beaten the SWYPE user, and an average SWYPE user would have been done in 15 seconds.
@CannibalTr0ll I never said I didn't like SWYPE: I said SWYPE is commonly faster than thumbing: merely that both the SWYPE user and iPhone user in this video are both operating at about 33% the speed of an average user.
@TryThrowCatchFinally Just saying, did you hear about the guy who beat the guy in the video with one finger? He barely made it, whilst this guy barely trying.
i think this is better than voice dictation and looks promising, i wonder why people are so into voice dictation, i dont want to want that my seat neighbour in bus or trains listens when i get to the next fuckparade xD
Looks cool, but the secret to typing on the Iphone is trusting the correction, i blow this away by just typing and trusting and the only word it messes up is mr for me on the Iphone. I can even do it with out keeping my eyes on the phone the whole time. Cant Imagine that while dragging my finger on the screen
I can text way faster than that guy with an iPhone 4. And if be actually holds it he will text faster. I want thus swype thing in my iPhone 4 tho, it will be way easier to text in class. Time to go to cydia :)
It's a faster way to communicate if you HATE using your thumbs or a stylus to write even the simplest of messages. That would be ME, the anti-texter, until I got a Samsung Galaxy Tablet and learned to Swype; now, I send texts and post to forums all the time through this method of writing. Better? Only if you hate pounding words out with your thumbs. I have Dumb Thumbs!
He did 25 words in 40 seconds so he would have an average of 36wpm and thats the average user speed so I don't see how this is faster than iphone's standard texting..a speed demon swyper vs an iphone speed demon texter like me, I know he won't stand a chance, I believe is a great technology don't get me wrong but labeling "a faster way to text " is misleading and false advertising
True I'm a txt speed demon, I have currently 65wpm on itextspeed idk many who can type faster than me, mayb one of my friends who is the ultimate gossip queen and has unlmitd plans on evrythin and has a 75wpm on her sidekick 09 which i think is cheating since she had that phone since it came out, we have tried to beat her but she's just a master txtr, can any1 here txt faster than her, not any1 I know can, she claims she could txt much faster and i believe her
i dont even type, i just talk and my phone does the typing for me.

My iPhone has swype. So best of both worlds.
woahhconnor 5 months ago
for those who just dont like the idea - the vid shows BOTH being slow..

You wanna know something absolutely shit in general and has nothing to do with preference? ; beiber.
d0zris 6 months ago 23
@d0zris I typed with a different keyboard (won't name it so that people don't believe I'm advertising anything) and I did it faster than swype by three seconds after the first try. :)
imeldabruckner 3 months ago
@imeldabruckner T9? yea so did I
matiaveli 2 months ago
@d0zris Dude, no one types 25 words in 7 seconds on a full QWERTY keyboard. that's around 250 WPM. Come on man, do some simple 4th grade math before you sell this bullshit.
alexmojo2 1 month ago
re:Swype, i think it's a nice gimmick and looks cool, but i don't think it's anything beyond that.

I have recently moved to swype. When you get used to it, there is no faster way, took me a while to actually get to grips with it though
KevinM2k 7 months ago
I still typed this faster, and i even forgot what to type and had to wait for the swype guy to continue so i could remember what to type. plain and simple, YOUR NEVER GOING TO TYPE FASTER WITH 1 FINGER THAN 2
Just like on a regular keyboard, a 2 finger typist will not type faster than someone who used all 10 properly.

youkids123 7 months ago
The iphone user is slow, but swype is still faster. Surprisingly easy learning curve, too.
pottyfrog 7 months ago
Yeah, I agree. that iphone user is SLOW because even i can type the same speed i can on my desktop, 70-80wpm. my ipod touch speed is about 50-60. But, being an android user now, I can say i can type a lot faster than 60wpm with swype. Because you can move your hand fast, without even touching 3 letters of the word your spelling out, and it STILL gets it correct. Difference: How fast can you move your hand and click a key vs how fast can you draw. One less motion, Click. So, must be faster
PhxSt0rmz 7 months ago
While I'm still playing with Swipe, I took a screenshot of what it was they were trying to write, and i two-tumbbed the message almost twice as fast as either of them did... I'm all for new ways of texting, but I have yet to see anyone swype faster than someone who is average speed two-thumber.

@utubegay1 Care to elaborate? You sound like an apple fanboy.
bloodhownd 8 months ago
@bloodhownd Not at all, in fact, i own two android operated devices. One is for my work and one is a personal device. I dislike apple and its company policies, i would never buy iphone. Swype sucks because it is simply not reliable, atleast for a person like me. Sure, it may look cool at first but i personally felt that a normal qwerty keyboard is wonderful and is less error prone. But i guess that depends on who is using it as well, i simply stated my opinion.
utubegay1 8 months ago
@utubegay1 Ah ok then. Whatever works for you then i guess ;)

Saying the iphone user in the video is slower than the average iphone user is pretty retarded. This demo. You can tell both users were going about the same speed which is what you need for this to actually show which one is better. Doing the same demo. with two people texting three times as fast, will end up with the same result.

Dragon dictation
shawngaran 10 months ago
Poor representation: SWYPE is easier, and more often than not, faster, than regular typing... But both the people in this are slow as molasses. The average iPhone user would have beaten the SWYPE user, and an average SWYPE user would have been done in 15 seconds.
TryThrowCatchFinally 10 months ago
@TryThrowCatchFinally You can always NOT use swype. lol.
CannibalTr0ll 10 months ago
@CannibalTr0ll I never said I didn't like SWYPE: I said SWYPE is commonly faster than thumbing: merely that both the SWYPE user and iPhone user in this video are both operating at about 33% the speed of an average user.
TryThrowCatchFinally 10 months ago
@TryThrowCatchFinally Just saying, did you hear about the guy who beat the guy in the video with one finger? He barely made it, whilst this guy barely trying.

I have Dumb Thumbs!
lambikins 11 months ago
He did 25 words in 40 seconds so he would have an average of 36wpm and thats the average user speed so I don't see how this is faster than iphone's standard texting..a speed demon swyper vs an iphone speed demon texter like me, I know he won't stand a chance, I believe is a great technology don't get me wrong but labeling "a faster way to text " is misleading and false advertising
