Most of the time, the more humane thing to do with a horse when it breaks its leg is to put it down. Look at Barbaro, he received top medical care, but still couldn't come back from a broken leg.
Their legs and mainly their hooves can't sustain the uneven weight distribution of being on 3 legs after breaking one. Even if the bone heals, they're at risk for laminitis in the hooves of their "good" legs, which is extremely painful. So putting them down avoids further pain.
That is so sad. I love the Dancing proformance, watch it from time to time. Just about makes me cry, it's so amazing. Sorry for your loss. Seriously. That's sad.
I once saw a race horse that the owners kept alive after a broken leg. The horse never healed, was kept in a cast and had to have a sling under its body to keep it upright. it was torture. The animal is simply too big to maintain itself upright after a break. I cried when I heard she died, then marveled that a dressage horse was honored in the news. She touched many hearts with her perfection. Too bad she left no babies behind.

Even though Totilas is fabulous, and the highest scoring Grand Prix horse ever, I still think this mare's 2006 Musical Freestyle is the absolute best. So correct, so elastic, esp. the passage and piaffe. What a team they were! What a spirit she had. How wonderful that she is immortalized on YouTube.

For those of you wondering why anyone would put a horse down with "just a broken leg", it all depends on the severity and the location of the break. Matine broke her off fore at the knee and there was nothing that could be done to save her. If anything, she would have had to stay in a stall and be miserable for the rest of her life, and that is assuming she survived all the surgerys and medicine that would be required. That is no way for a horse to live. RIP Matine, you are sorely missed.
People saying negative things about her being pts for a broken leg really shouldnt be so negative. This was a multi million dollar horse Im sure they did what they could for her. Not all broken l;egs can be fixed. I saw a horse get her leg broke in half yes in half and that cant b fixed. Her break muctve been really bad for her owners to come to this discission. The equine world lost a great camp. She will be missed

I love horse riding, I really admire all the work put into Dressage and racing, but the poor horses that get put down because they become 'useless' after they break a leg or so is just ridiculous.
I don't know the full story behind her broken leg, so there may have been more to deserve being killed, but if the sole reason is that she broke her leg than it's just not right.
I'll never ever forget her absolutly amazing performances... I'll also never forget that her performance at 2006 WEG reduced me to tears and made me get back on my horse back competeing... Shes so wonderful, and I love her sooooo much
She will always be my favourite dressage horse ~ so beautiful and such a tragedy being so young. My horse passed away 18 months ago aged 30. He got gold at WEG in 1990 and I dream that he has met up with her in horsey heaven.
I am so sorry to hear she died before she was able to have a baby. What an incredibly generous horse who loved her work. You can see it in her movement and her total attentiveness to her dance partner. The judges didn't like her swishing tail, but I thought it was an Idiosyncrasy in this horse's style, not a fault....it was her trademark....part of her showing off and sort of emphasizing certain movements. Sassy and proud.
