just because we use bits dosent mean were being cruel, and bitless bridles are just as bad your just putting more pressure on there nose! believe me im not cruel to my horses and if horses hated being ridden etc they would walk up to you in the paddocks and love you the was you love them. not everyone is cruel to horses
i use a bit in on my horse but i dont ride with my hands, i use to legs and seat. Its only cruel if you are constantly ragging the horses mouth or pulling it it to get the horse 'on the bit'. You dont need to use your hands for your horse to do that, just get them realy working from their back end. I personally would never use a bitless bridle as they put pressure on their nose and if you think about it, thats how they breathe and your putting pressure on it =/
I don't think bits are cruel. Most of the time my reins are slack and the bit is simply there in my pony's mouth. I ask her to stop with my seat, back and legs. If she chooses not to, I raise my hands. If she still chooses not to, I give a feel down my reins. When she does stop, I say cease all pressure and thank you. Bits aren't cruel, just the way some people use them.
I Agree with what most people are saying.....I have a T/B and if i didn't use a bit she would realise and start being even naughtier and cheekier toward me!!
To be honest, I don't think bits are that cruel, as long as they are not too strong. I would never ride my horse in anything stronger than the snaffle that he is currently in. I don't think that simply putting a stronger bit in the horse's mouth will make it stop or ride better; sure, it's a temporary measure but the only thing that can really solve this is gentle, patient schooling. I once rode my TB bitless; if anything, I found that he went worse than when he has a bit!
when i ride, i use a very gentle bit. and do NEVER pull on it.Some people are able to use a bit without abusing of it. but riding bitless could be a good idea for obedient horses
i tryed a hackamore on my horse and he just acts like its not there so i have no other option to us a bit and u try going around 3 barrles at top speed and stoping that horse with out a bit hahaha thats funny that wont happen
what i hate about this video is that it only shows pictures of ignorant riders using roulker, very poor/experienced riders pulling on the reins, or bad falls. now I'm not saying bitless bridles are horrible (excluding the hackamore which can stop the horse from breathing when used to harshly) in fact i think its a wonderful idea but i don't think that bits are horrible. you are only showing the bad and not the good- a horse can be just as happy and comfortable in a snaffle as they can b bitless
Okay just say don't get pissed our anything, BUT when you say "bitless" your most likely referring to a hackamore witch just to let you know stops a horse from breathing if you hold on it to long so i don't know what your talking about when you say that ridding with a bit is cruel!!BTW it's not if it is used right and most people use it right! Some don't!Videos like this just piss me off when people ASSUME things......
And also! what alot (not all!!) of bitless bridles lack in mouth action double up on poll action, i think in the wrong hands a bitless bridle can do ALOT! of damage and should only be used if u no what you are doing! I would no dare put 1 near my horse with out my tack fitter coming, fitting it and explaning how it works and what the presure points are
I would love 2 ride bitless but i find it unsafe and i feel very unsure, that is my personal opinion. I ride with a light hand aiming to ask my horse to go into self carrage using my weight, leg, body posision and guidence from my hands. i also ride in a loose ring joined snaffle, no nut cracker action and little poll action. Alot of riders do ride in some horrific bits but i feel happy in my snaffle!
who's ever said that horses are for people to sit on them and ride them in the first place? make them do funny, unnatural steps and run and jump at the crack of a human's whip. what a weird idea to assume that that's a living creature's purpose on earth ...... .
Okay look. I know a mare. The owners had a bitless bridle and that horse nearly killed them (Mind you this horse is TRAINED as in competed in shows in english and done decent if not very well) They put a bit in the horses mouth. LE GASP!!! the horse stops running away!! is it in fear and pain?? NO. And the horse i ride now if i didnt have a bit in its mouth i would be in the hospital. for your lil broken down horses so broke they do anything for you (broke as in deathly well trained)
@CowgirlGoneJumper but if they aint that well trained. Slap a bit in their mouth so ya dont kill your self. These are TWELVE HUNDRED POUNDS OF OPERATING SPOOKY BRAINED MUSCLED ANIMALS!!! not lil puppies you can pick up and push around they are animals that will take a mile if you give an inch
@CowgirlGoneJumper not deathly well trained but trained to where you could let lil kids ride and she is fine but not deathly well but they used bitless and it made a dent in her nose and she got away with murder till they finally put her back in a bit
Look I have a horse he has a D-Ring bit and he dosen't care that it is in he opens his mouth for me to put it in and if I was hurting him with it he would find a way of telling me withought hurting me he just wouldn't open his mout my horse is a show jumper a good one and I don't want to break him he is very smart and would do something about it and I bet that if you have or had a horse you would have one and I am so gentle on my reing so gentle I can't even fell them x
I have a 17.2, 6 year old hunt horse who was gelded 2 years ago. i ride in in a straight bar pelum with a curb chain. i've tried him in a hackamore and broke my collerbone because i couldn't hold him back as we headed for a jump. i think the bitless bridal did more harm to me than what a bit has done to my horse!
OK i do understand what you're implying i do. but if you train a horse with a snaffle shit that's the gentlest bit known to man. doens't hurt them at all. my mom's horse can take off os fast she throws her shoes sparks fly from her shoes, she's reached 60 mph once. she has a HIGH head, she's hot like a son of a bitch. if you bvarely squeeze your legs you're off and flying. and my mom raised and trained her. she's not running crazy she's not broke she's trained and rides with a snaffle. gentle
I understand what you're trying to do, but you are sadly uneducated about bits. Please check your facts before posting persuasive videos on the Internet. Sorry.
I Totally agree the fact that people pull on there mouth and whatever but you can ride with Bit And give the Horse its Head and it WILL NOT HARM them, Not everyone Riidng with a Bit is as bad as you make out!
Ok i just want to say something. I love horses with all my heart and a bit dose not hurt the horse and if you use and bridle and bit while tranning braking or ridding right you will not ever hurt your horse. it is just people who dont know any better or just dont care hurt there horse and i ride without a bridle and bit alot because i broke all of my horses right to where i can and they trust me and are not scared i am able to pull my bridle out and they have no trouble putting it on
I use a thick rubber coated bit, and my horse could care less. When you use a hackamore, they eventually damage the nerve endings on a horses face, making the horse ignore pressure there more and more. Until, eventually, they become irresponsive to hackamores, which is dangerous. Yes, some bits are cruel like wire bits, twisted bits, and gag bits. But some, like mine, are perfectly humane if used properly. (:
yet but i've heard that they work very well. and ridding in the halter or bitless isnot always safer. my old horse hates the bit so i ride her in a halter a lot, but i never feel like i have as much control, even though she chews the bit a lot she works a lot better in it andi know she will stop in it. also some hackamore bridles can hurt the horse more than a bit can. i've seen horses get their noises broken because of some mechanical hackamore. it just depends on what your own opinion is, but
Try buying an actual bit less bridal. My horse hated the bit too (it would take us almost 20 minutes just to get him to take it) We got him one and it works great! they are made to put pressure on certain parts of the horses head so it works the same as a bit, but with much less hassle!
i've actually tried one! we got the Dr.Cooks bitless and she did good at first, but not long after having it she got to where she wouldn't stop and would just ignore whatever i asked her to do. so i had to go back to a bit.. =/ when we first got her the girl that helped me used a mechanical hackmore and that pretty much made her worse.. she would throw her head really bad and would buck a lot. so far i've found one bit that she works really well in but that's it! LOL thank u
@GattoGordoTattoo it was/is definetly worth finding what your horse works best in! even though a bitless didn't work with my horse, it doesn't mean it doesn't work with others =) it's always worth the shot for sure!
@MackMMorgan have you really seen that??? or just heard about it coz tbh someone would have to be v heavy handed to actually break its nose or had probs fitted hackamore too low, i intend to use bitless on my youngster, whichever one she goes best in as she hates the bit and why should i force her.
@sorcha24 i have not seen it actually break the nose, but i have seen a horse that i know who had a major dish in his nose from where the hackamore was and yes the person using it was/is very hard on the horses. as long as the rider is not rough. i agree with if your young horse doesn't like the bit then dont force her, but also keep in mind that at a young age they need time to get used to them. but i hope you find what she does best in!
if you know how to use the bit then it's not harmful. yes some people are really hard on their horses and therefore causes problems. however now everyone rips on there faces and causes them harm. some bits are harder than others, and some are kinder. for example, according to my horses previous owner she has stuck her tounge over the bit and out, ive heard this can be caused by harsh handeling, but we bought a bit that is a tounge release so it will keep the pressure from her. i haven't tried it
u have now idea wat the f*ck ur talking about if the riders now wat there doing then the horse if fine. so dont accuse us of animal cruilty. my ponies love the bits be cause the bits are soft in there mouth.
only some bits are made to be cruel such as twist bits and the larger bits. but a soft bit with a soft hand is not cruel and some horses need a bit to occupy them. im working with a colt who actually enjoys a bit or any thing in his mouth. i use a rubber bit with my horse it doesnt hurt him but it aids in my performance with him. its not what u use on ur horse its how u use it
i know it creul Right... in my lesson today i saw a really mean girl she was abuesing the horse secretly she was kicking on and pulling back on the rains really hard the horse had its head turned and high up in the air chocking helplessly after the lesson i went over to her and said wtf is wrong with u then she made up all these lies the horse was named safire i looked in her stall and she was opening and closing her mouth with her head down I HATE THAT GIRL SO MUCH!!!!!
A hackamore under the hands of a bad rider is equally as cruel as a bit. A good rider makes the horse a partner and understands that this is accomplished through a building of trust and respect and gentle communication. A bad rider makes the horse a slave and it doesn't matter what headgear is used...it's all about controlling the horse instead of communicating with him.
Bridles without bits can hurt more. If you pull it gives lots of pressure on the horses face. That happens everytime, with a bit (If used right and softly) doesn't hurt them unless you yank an their mouth.
My pony would never stop without a bridle, she is so strong. My friend has been riding since a child and she is very good at riding and has 5 of her own and she struggles to stop her sometimes. Not all horses or ponies will listen
If you really think these are any better your blind both bits and hackamores are hard on a horse if you really don't want to be "cruel" to your horse don't ride him cause you can argue that just sitting on their back causes them back and foot problems if you cant deal with some of the small things get out of the equine worlds its a cruel place for rider and horse.
Most bits aren't as hackamore. If the rider gets to strong with a hackamore then it could easily break the horses nose, so it's all about the rider and how they react.
It isn't the bit, it's the hands that use them. The same can be said for any bit less bridle. A snaffle can be cruel and a spade can be gentle, although, an educated rider would never over bit a horse. A spade is meant for a highly trained horse and a skillful rider. Adding a stronger bit is rarely the solution to an unruly horse. Most horses have people problems, people do not have horse problems, but, the bit, is not usually the problem.
My horse runs in a double-jointed Mikmar combo and it's the ONLY bit he likes. It looks like a beast but trust me, if I tried to run him XC in a bitless bridle we would both be in big trouble. On the flat he goes in a full-cheek french link snaffle. A LOT less of a bit because he's not being distracted by the jumps. But even on the flat I wouldn't go bitless. His bits aren't causing him harm. He's just not the type of horse that bitless would work well on.
Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble, but bits ARE NOT BAD WHEN USED CORRECTLY. Chaging to bitless probably won't help bucking, bolting, or biting. A bit does stop a horse. And the fact of the matter is, I use a bitless bridle myself, and have noticed my horse behaving differently in good and bad ways. He has more freedom of movement, which causes him to lose focus and start nibbling away at anything we pass, but I noticed he likes it. I have been riding for years and know that some horses NEED bits
Bit are not abuive unless you dont no how to ride with one. Id like to see you ride my ottb ( of the track thoroughbred) bitless, you couldnt stop him..
Wohaa more of this BS. Okay do you want the best for your horse?! DONT RIDE IT Since they arent build for it or otherwise stop this bs about ppl are mistreating their horses if they use a bit... Caus you see if you work together and listens to him you can work with the horse anyway with or without a bit^_^
I agree, but to a point. if the bit is used kindly it doesn't hurt the horse. in pony club and competition i ride in a french link snaffle and ride in a halter with reins the rest of the time. bitless bridles actually hurt too. they use poll pressure and have to be used with as much care a a bit and bridle
i believe in bitless, but i lso believe in bits. i ride in a french link snaffle. i ride in western bridles with heavier bits but it really depends on the horse and the rider's capability. i have a mare that seems to hate the bit and i am thinking of looking for a bitless, but i also ride school-horses that would be hopeless and run around with every student that gets on if they didnt have at least a snaffle or D-ring. :)
If you knew anything about horse-back riding you would know that you need a bit. Not all bits are painful to horses smarty. I love my horses so I use something called Ouch-Less bits. I am offended that you said this.
i think its every riders dream to ride trackless along a long sandy beach. but with some horses its not possible. a bit is only harsh as the rider using but i do dissgree with loading the horses mouth up with metal. i have to use a snaffle on my horse as he can be strong and spooky. and a bitless bridle will put way to much pressure on him. alhthough i agree with you i also agree against you.if i had a choice to have my horse beahve one way or another (with a bit or bitless) i would go bitless.
When i first rode a horse in a bit less bridle,.. i had no control over the horse i was riding,.. but after a few goes i leaned to handle it properly,.. Soon i went to another riding school where i rode this horse who was constantly in a bitless bridle or Hackermore... I had more control over him then with a horse in a bit,.. but the pull of a bitless bridle affects the poll, as well as the nose. SO i will favour the bit more than bitless,..
A bit is only as harsh as the hands controlling it.I use a big shanked twisted mouthpiece bit but my horse has NO problems with it. No head shyness, nothing, why? Because I use EXTREMELY soft hands on him. Hackamores can be just as damaging in the wrong hands. It all boils down to educating people on how to ride, not the equipment we use.
Love the video. It didn't just show harsh bits but all bits! Congrats! I did a lot of research with the bit and what it does, it horrible! I am glad people are allowing horse to actually show their true self! I have seen many horses too afraid to show them selves because of the bit, because of the pain it brings. Many tests have been done and it shows all bits do damage (tests done by vets). The one bitless bridle i don't agree on are hackamores. Another cruel way of riding. A Halter does fine.
i tried bitless with my horse and he tanked off with me every time i rode him and bucked. i thought he had some thing wrong with him and had EVERYTHING cheacked and nothing was wrong so i decided to go back to his snaffle bit and he stoped doing it.
I understand the professianial riders pull but in my opinion it is almost only them. Every horse I ride has a bridle that fits not one that is to small. THough yes the best people are a little inhumane!
Bitless with bad riders are more dangerous than bits with bad riders. I've seen people break their horses noses SO easily, with even less pressure. But I've NEVER seen a rider cause any major harm to a horse using a bit.
You want to ride bitless, great. I ride with a neck rope all the time in freestyle reining. But the bit is a tool that can be used correctly. A gentle snaffle to start, a curb late ron for onehanded. Last time I checked, none of my horses even need me to touch the bit heavy.
@9showjumper With the right kind of training over long time, it would be perfectly possible to ride her bitless. I'm not saying riding with bit is wrong, I do it myself. I'm just saying it is possible to ride bitless, I do it myself, I variate. Even the most bolting horses CAN be trained to be ridden bitless. You just have to accept that it will take time.
some people are bad riders and get fustrated at their horse and cause injuries because they think that it was the horses fault but its not . some horses are sweating and there mouth is open that is more likely because they worked hard and are trying to get more air to cool down .BITS ARE NOT USED FOR PAIN UNLESS USED THE WRONG WAY Clinton Anserson has some amazing horses and he uses whips but his horses were trained like that and it is not used for pain there performancecues are with the whip
A bit is not based of pain but it really hurts your horse by the lightest pull.
There is a lot of examining about bits and all of them prooved that a bit has a lot of effect.Ofcourse i respect your opinion to, you onley have to know that it is painfull.
Hackamores are painfull to, the onley thing wath is not painfull is a verry light bridle, like a rope halter, and than you still must ride whit you reins in a bow.
not saying bitless bridles are bad, if you tried riding some of the horses i ride with out one you would have no hope in getting anywhere! i can see how a bit can cause pain and so on, just not every horse will go well with a bitless bridle, it just depends on how you are with your hands ... lik easlong as you dont yank around and keep your hands still then i dont see the problem with bits ? ...
the mare i ride is in a crossover bit-less bridle. Her owner competes her xc and sj in it too. She uses a bit in dressage as she "has" to which is stupid but there we go. She is a 16.3hh wb so she is a right lump. Go with what works (oh ye we also use our sec a gelding in crossover with my son. He is learning to ride and wont catch his mouth when there is no bit)
The use of bit less bridles are fascinating and this pass summer when i was working I was granted the opportunity to join in on a clinic on a Tennessee walker that had not been ridden in three years that they used a bit less bridle. It truly was amazing, all of it was done bareback and by the end we had the horse trotting collected and everything. I agree that bit less bridles are a way for things to come, imagine! Not having to teach your horse to take the bit.
My riding instructor always says "A hackamore is a lot more bit than a snaffle or other bits" this is becasue hackamore cut off air partially and the one part presses into the horse face where a bit is just applying pressure to the mouth when used correctly.
Hi just a quick question, mmy mums cob has started being broken in ( by me ) and my mum diddnt want him having a bit so we got him a bitless bridle, he has been ridden in a halter all the time and once or twice in a normal bridle with a bit, and he was fine, but with the bitless bridle he kept shaking his head around and tryed rearing when i went to get on him, he wouldnt stand still and kept trying to scratch his head, then took of acorss the field ? i took it of straight away and he was fine?
@melissanamaste There are plenty of inhumane hackamores (excuse my spelling) that look very uncomfortable. Having a piece of stiff twisted rope putting pressure on my nose sounds worse than just a plain old snaffle. And technically any equipment could be "uncomfortable" to a horse: saddle, halter, girth, or us just having our weight on their backs. We don't use any of the equipment because the horse asked us to, we use it because we need it. And just because you don't use it doesn't make it bad.
I personally think that if a bit is used with the wrong rider it can be extremely hard and painful on the horses mouth. Foam doesn't mean pain but is actuall a form of sweat. When I take my horse out of the pasture his mouth is sometimes foamy and there was nothing in his mouth other than grass. Nice video though:)
Listen here! I'm tired of all you people who say that bidlees can damage as much, and that it depends on the rider! Honestly ... I think it's because you have not tried the other method, and like has set his head that you are doing is right! Anyone can make mistakes, and why not ride without bite when it is 1000 times better for the horse? Anyway...What would you rather? Make things more fun for your horse, or be indifferent. It's your decision! But think you about :)
None of my horses have foamed at the mouth, bled, gotten cut, or hurt in anyway from a bit. Anything in the horse world can become a weapon of pain and hurt for horses in the wrong hands. I'm sure horses have been hurt with bit less bridles as well. C;
by the way, only people who dont know how to ride hurt their horsesw mouth with bits. even if you put a heay bit in a horses mouth, if you are soft, it can help. i jump my horse 4 foot with a full bridle, and he is amazing.
I ride with bits and most horses do fine. But my horse is pretty spooky and always fiddles with the bit so I purchased Dr. Cooks Bitless bridle pray it works :)
Bits are antiquated...An age old means of signal and control. Even if the rider has a light hand the fact is that bits are an uncomfortable means of signal. Do horses get used to them?...Sure they do.. That doesn't mean that they're an evolved way of relating to the species. We've just gotten used to the idea. We can be much more than that.
Why are they wrong, the thing thats makes bits wrong are the riders. Okay some horses are okay with hackamores ( bitless bridles) But some horse need more control, I read a book once in it a horse a realy strong bit, the horse was sold the owners changed to a snaffle bit the horse was fab, no logger whizzy, didn't buck, rear, bolt. Some times you can combine the two a strong nosed band then a light bit for back up.BUT any way my message is If you have a horrible rider
@missponyluver11 I've been around horses for more than 50 years and I spent a good deal of time reschooling ruined horses. Some of my favorites were what's called "dead runaways".Horses ruined by bad hands. What I usually used with them was a Kelly hackamore. The trick was though that they learned that it was NEVER employed if they halted with a change of seat. They knew that the closed seat, upright posture and picking up the reins meant "whoa". Drawing the reins back was rarely necessary.
i half agree bitless brideless put a lot of pressure on the horses nose with some horses dont like or those other things, a good idea is to have bridle where the nose piece does more work than the bit, so the bits there as a back up, i know some with a bridle like that and it realy works for there horse
fyi bits arint abusive there only abusive if the people who use them use them wrong my mare doesint care if a use a harshish western bit it does nothing more hurtful as long as you use them right its not rthe bit its the person
@KittyGoMew13 Have a vet examine your mare. Sounds like she may have an ovarian problem. Mares who have ovarian cysts can be VERY uncomfortable and they will go "apeshit".
I would also like to say that spurs, when used properly, are not dangerous. Do you know people that use choke chains for collars on their dogs? It's the same thing. In the wrong hands (or feet in this case) they can be dangerous. I'm a firm believer that one isn't allowed to put spurs on their feet until they are taught how to use them PROPERLY. Please, don't go thinking all bits/spurs are bad. It's all in how the rider uses them. Just remember a hack cuts off the horse's airway when pulled on
Bits are only as bad as the rider's hands. I have a Thoroughbred that I can ride in a halter and lead rope, but he actually PREFERS a bit. Why? Because of the detailed communication we have that way. If you were to put a soft (thicker, with a french link) snaffle in a horse's mouth, and put a complete beginner on that horse then that horse won't have as many issues as some do with a hack. I know some horses that no matter the training, they just can't deal with the pressure of a hack vs snaffle.
I Ride In A hackamoor On All My Horses, Evan My Horse That We Are Going to Start Training in reining. But If You Ride Like Me It Doesnt Matter If you have a bit or not i let all the horses i ride have their heads
Yall shouldn't judge the tool, but the executioner. I ride all my horses with a standard english bit (double broken), and my showjumpers bitless with a mechanical hackamore. Why? Because my showjumpers can be crazy, and normal bits only blind a running horse. Pain scares them, and i will not have any of my horses in distrust because their rider is too big a coward to examine the problem
I use normal bits for my horses in training because it gives detail that a hackamore cant give.
I dont use bits myself. I think that they are unnecessary and can be used in terrible ways. BUT I do think this vid puts forward a slightly ignorant point of view. Firstly, bits are an effective way for a novice rider to stop a novice horse. They are not terribly harmful if used in the right hands, and can do less damage that a bitless under the right conditions.
However the myth that you "must" have a bit in a horses mouth is rubbish. ANY horse can be ridden bitless with the right training.
Hopefully this will get ppl thinking! I ride and drive my pony bitless and she is amazing in it. Yes, hackamores can cause awful damage if used incorrectly but there are different bitless bridles available now. (I use Dr.Cooks bitless bridles. They're fantastic) ANY horse can be ridden bitless if you spent the time training it ! Yes it may take a year or two but it really WILL be worth it !!
I was told that bitless bridles were for strong horses, i do agree that some bits can be harsh if used in a wrong way, but if used in a right way painless. I agree with oPinkPonyo some equipment is inhumane but it is normally the riders fault.
Hello, Bitless bridles may seem like a good idea but they are just exactly the same as using a bit. Being too rough on the bit can damage the horses mouth but the same happens with the bitless bridle. If it is miss used, that can easily damage the horse. The recent owners of my newest horse had him in a bitless and they must have been harsh as there is now a raised part on his face from it and it's hard to get near it. It's difficult to put the bridle on him as he is learning, you can't touch it
i learned to ride on a hackamore so i could learn how to use my hands properly before i moved on to a bit. then one day i was jumping and she bolted FOR the jump and pivited (sorry, cant spell that) on the landing. scence then we have had to use a bit on her. and the horse i own now also needs a bit because he likes to run at jumps and in the canter.
im with you i hate bits! and i use them right but it still does not work for me so i tried bitless i have not had any problem at all!! im Bitless all the way!! =D
A lot of people see this as an insult to their riding. I see it as an insight of the different methods to training a bonding with your horse. BUT both bitless and and bit can cause pain to a horse. So neither one is the right or wrong way.
I agree and disagree with you here. Some horses dont do well in hackamores and some do awesome! I think it all depends on your horse. I like to use hackamores on my Arabians but I use snaffles or soft bits on all my other horses.
I gave up bits six years ago (before bitless was so popular) when I started working with racehorses off the track after ther mouths were ruined by racing. And let me tell you this from the experience of thousands of bitless riding hours they work!! I have yet to come across a situation or a equine sport where the bitless bridle did not work! I have faced many harsh comments regarding my methods but the funny thing is....all of my critics had never tried riding bitless...ever!
I never really used hackamores or anything on my horse, she chews on her bit when she gets bored -.-' but usually, i just ride using her halther and lead rope
my mare actually is very good without a bit. at the walk anyways. there are just some horses that u need a bit with. my horse for sure needs one so she feels more contact because she is super hyper at the canter and i have to pull and pull to slow down or stop
@Horses4ever8 Try teaching the (moderate) one rein stop (but start at the beginning) at the walk.....also you should ride enough to aquire a "balanced seat".....and "teach" the horse to whoa.....horses no how to do almost everything they day they're born.....a good teacher has a horse that does these things when he wants him too......bits dont hurt horses.....hands do...!!!
Not all bits are harmful. Its usually the fault of the rider, not the equipment (in some cases the equipment is inhumane, but only idiots use those kinds of devices) I ride one of my horses bitless or with a bit. Neither one causes him harm or distress. He is perfectly content with both methods. I understand your point with the video but just because someone is riding with a bit doesnt mean they are hurting the horse. Some bits are cruel, yes, but not all. :)
These are old wives tales-good hands -gentle bits etc...STORIES you tell yourself to justify the cruelty to the poor horse with the BIt. What about the breathing problem created by the Bit -you see airflow is reduced when swallowing food so when a Bit is fitted it gives a false signal because the saliva reflex makes the brain think food is coming this in turn reduces air temporarily and we work our horses in this restricted airflow stage and this is without any reins being used!
@oPinkPonyo i agree with u at the start it saaid that by giving up the use of bits wont sacrafice any control bullshit it will u can baresly stop the fucking horse if u use the bit correctly its fine if u dont than fuck all of them that dont they can have a bit in their mouth i have a horse she loves the farking bit because she was mouthed and controlled properly the people of society out there dont understand that some people are good some are evil
@MsGigantica Using a bit is based off of pressure not pain. Anyway, I have already had many people reply to my comment. You ride bitless, good for you. I ride with a bit, good for me. There are tons of methods to handling horses. We all have our opinions and "facts" about them. I respect your opinion, but my horses are healthy and happy. I'm not going to stop using my tack because someone on youtube told me to. Not trying to be rude.
i see your point i hate using the bit on my horse. i can't afford to buy a bitless bridle at the moment when im in the paddock i use a halter and leadrope and ride bare back and i can really see the difference in my horses and my mood we feel more like a team of freedom, i feel alot safer to. but it's all different when i put the saddle and bridle on my horse hates it and tends to fight me sometimes and i don't feel safe in the saddle either.
Riding with out a bit is not a choice. It depends on the horse...Some horse are close to immposible to ride without a bit and some could care less. The only choice that you can make is to try not using a bit and see if it works out. Everyone just needs to find the right bit for their horse that makes both the rider and the horse comfortable
Guns don't kill people, people kill people... likewise, bits don't abuse horses, people abuse horses... :-( It's not the bit, it's what's on the other end of the reins.
What a load of total BULL you are talking here mate-where is your evidence? Is this produced by some bull""" excuse you tell yourself about not being cruel to your horse by using the archaic and painful device of the bit- the nar, nar , nin nar nar approach-GROWUP! @nerdcrossing101
@nerdcrossing101 no they dont, i ride my horse in a rope halter and a bitless bridle with a rope nose band and she is fine, you would have to have spikes on them to actually damage the nerves, dont talk until u try, believe my my horse hates bits, she wont open her mouth if i put one on, she likes bitless bridles and loves rope halters, i can see from her behaviour, plus the bit ( a kk trainer thick, one of the nicest u can get) gave her teeth problems and a sore mouth
If you use a rope bridle, must the reins hang in a bow, just like with a bit...Otherside your horse has pain, with bridle is the pain much more. If ride bitless onley with a neckrope or somethimes with nothing, your horse doesn't have pain.
@nerdcrossing101 Of the many hundreds of horses I have seen ridden with rope halters/bridles I have never seen one that is head shy. They are very light and would have to be adjusted absolutely perfectly for that particular horse to even go near the facial nerves. That is one of the many old wives tales that abound. Tools don't make horses head shy, PEOPLE do. They become PEOPLE shy because of bad treatment, heavy hands, and people who don't know what they're doing.
you do realise yes a bitless brilde is good and is sometimes better but if you have a horse what is hard to controll then you HAVE to have a bit sometimes theres no choice but i do agree with you abut the harsh bts you DONT need harsh yo can do everything with a soft bit but sometime you dont have a choice
What About sturrips! WE kick the horse to make it move, are we just going to get rid of thoughs too because it may hurt the horse. GET A BETTER RIDER THATS USED TO THE HORSE! Yes it may hurt them but lossen up if it does, theres no need to post such a horrible video!
@JumperLover1000 wow over reacting sturps dont touch the horse your heels do and you use your legs to move the horse fowred but in a lot of horse sports you would use your seat or your voice but kicking the horse does no hurt them
I agree with you, and the way I see it, ANY amount of pressure in the horses mouth causes pain! I ride with just a plain old rope halter and lead rope. My horse is SO much happier and calmer, more responsive, collected, and gentle. :) I encourage everyone to join the bit-less revolution it DOES make a difference!
This is probably the best bitless montage on youtube. The poster states that it is rough handling that damages the horses mouth not the bit itself. Some horses like bits as they do not like the poll, chine groove or nose pressure a bitless provides while others like the bitless. I think however that a proper bitless bridle fits correctly as an incorrectly fitting one will cause more long term damage than say a snaffle that is too short. Also most competitions require a bit in the horses mouth.
@Andrea9514 No I don't, I've only had him since September, and I really want to try riding bit less but i'm not sure how he'll react to it, seeing as he's been ridden in a bit for nearly 16 years :/
@starxrobin3 My horse is 21 and he has been ridden with a bit his whole life and he was MUCH happier, calmer, more responsive, and willing when I rode him bit-less for the first time. So I have stuck with riding him with only a rope halter, I hope to purchase a bit-less bridle soon, but really, he works fine with just a halter, I was jumping him yesterday and I had full control over him, and he never refused, which he ALWAYS did when I rode him with a bit. He's just BETTER bit-less he's SO happy
I like this video, But some horses need the bit, Such as my saddlebred. He pulls on me so much & his canter is way to fast. I do need the bit to correct him & such, I don't yank just do a sudden pop with the reins. I think that bits only become weapons if the rider is abusing it's origonal purpose.
& I do get angery at some bits, I heard someone comment my horse while ridding, She said "He needs something sharp in his mouth" & I wanted to punch her!
i agree with u sooooo much! But I ride western and ur not constantly pulling on there mouth like english is! Western is more natrural for the horse and thats why i do it. But ur way is better and really neat but im sticken with western. . . .
i ride my arab mare in a hackamore due to the last owners use of the bit my horse is terrified if u even try to put a bit in her mouth... and anyone who says that you wouldnt be able to control every horse with a bitless is wrong.
The bit doesn't cause the problem, it's rider that makes the bit a problem. Same for a bitless bridle or hackamore. Now I have nothing wrong with either one. I ride a horse that is happier in a bitless bridle so I ride her in that but I had another horse who hated them and I used a bit and never had a problem. I enjoyed the video.
I do agree that it can cause pain, be cruel, etc. but I could never do no haveing reins. (My horse gets distracted to easy) but a halter is doable. And some horses like the bit.....A few horses at my barn like haveing something to play with in their mouth when we are juststanding or walking.
Oh that poor horse in :19...hes WAY over flexed! As fancy as it might look, thats really dangerous and unhealthy for the horse.....you could really do damage to your horse that way!! But I don't think bits are bad, just make sure you use them PROPERLY and SAFELY. I love natural horsemanship, but a feel safer with a bit....for now.
i tried the bitless bridle on the horse im leasing and it seemed tat he was in mopre pain with that than the bit. I use a basic tom thumb with him with very light hands...he hated the bitless bridle...I have to say though that it is all in the rider...if you have heavy hard hands..go bitless...but thats just my opinion...any pther sugestions you can give me though for going bitless on a horse that DOES NOT want to go bitless? please let me know!
i have been always taught to stop the horse with your seat before thinking of using the reins. i have never ridden in a bitless and have a erman hackamore on order. i will keep passing on what i have been taught though as it has saved me from a missfortune with the horses i work with.
* My horse isnt the most trusting horse in the world, although I trust her with my life I just dont think that having a bitless bridle would help me in any way as she is how she is and she didnt really accept not having a bit in her mouth as she is used to it. She has a rubber bit, which doesn't hurt her mouth as much as her old owners used to jam her in the mouth.
a bit does not necessary cause a horse to buck. My horse bucks as she gets overexcited and wants to catch up with other horses. You do not use a bit to stop the horse, you sit deep in the saddle and lightly squeeze with the reins which uses not much pressure on the bit. A bit it not just for stopping, you need it for control. I have tried bitless but my horse just didnt work very well at all. Some horses just can't work bitless. *
just because we use bits dosent mean were being cruel, and bitless bridles are just as bad your just putting more pressure on there nose! believe me im not cruel to my horses and if horses hated being ridden etc they would walk up to you in the paddocks and love you the was you love them. not everyone is cruel to horses
KaterinaMiseltoe123 1 month ago
i use a bit in on my horse but i dont ride with my hands, i use to legs and seat. Its only cruel if you are constantly ragging the horses mouth or pulling it it to get the horse 'on the bit'. You dont need to use your hands for your horse to do that, just get them realy working from their back end. I personally would never use a bitless bridle as they put pressure on their nose and if you think about it, thats how they breathe and your putting pressure on it =/
lottieluvs 1 month ago 2
I don't think bits are cruel. Most of the time my reins are slack and the bit is simply there in my pony's mouth. I ask her to stop with my seat, back and legs. If she chooses not to, I raise my hands. If she still chooses not to, I give a feel down my reins. When she does stop, I say cease all pressure and thank you. Bits aren't cruel, just the way some people use them.

I Agree with what most people are saying.....I have a T/B and if i didn't use a bit she would realise and start being even naughtier and cheekier toward me!!

I would never do anything to cause pain or suffering to my horse but i ride with a bit and if used correctly bits arnt cruel atall!
XXhayleaXX 2 months ago
It's not the bit that's the problem, it's the rider.
AriellSolo 2 months ago
To be honest, I don't think bits are that cruel, as long as they are not too strong. I would never ride my horse in anything stronger than the snaffle that he is currently in. I don't think that simply putting a stronger bit in the horse's mouth will make it stop or ride better; sure, it's a temporary measure but the only thing that can really solve this is gentle, patient schooling. I once rode my TB bitless; if anything, I found that he went worse than when he has a bit!
Hippophobic95 2 months ago
when i ride, i use a very gentle bit. and do NEVER pull on it.Some people are able to use a bit without abusing of it. but riding bitless could be a good idea for obedient horses

i tryed a hackamore on my horse and he just acts like its not there so i have no other option to us a bit and u try going around 3 barrles at top speed and stoping that horse with out a bit hahaha thats funny that wont happen
ilovetrader 3 months ago
what i hate about this video is that it only shows pictures of ignorant riders using roulker, very poor/experienced riders pulling on the reins, or bad falls. now I'm not saying bitless bridles are horrible (excluding the hackamore which can stop the horse from breathing when used to harshly) in fact i think its a wonderful idea but i don't think that bits are horrible. you are only showing the bad and not the good- a horse can be just as happy and comfortable in a snaffle as they can b bitless
TheDetectiveRiley 3 months ago
Bits arent abuse. They just need to be used in the correct way.

I would no dare put 1 near my horse with out my tack fitter coming, fitting it and explaning how it works and what the presure points are
Tammyx90 4 months ago 2
I would love 2 ride bitless but i find it unsafe and i feel very unsure, that is my personal opinion. I ride with a light hand aiming to ask my horse to go into self carrage using my weight, leg, body posision and guidence from my hands. i also ride in a loose ring joined snaffle, no nut cracker action and little poll action. Alot of riders do ride in some horrific bits but i feel happy in my snaffle!
Tammyx90 4 months ago
who's ever said that horses are for people to sit on them and ride them in the first place? make them do funny, unnatural steps and run and jump at the crack of a human's whip. what a weird idea to assume that that's a living creature's purpose on earth ...... .

CowgirlGoneJumper 4 months ago
@CowgirlGoneJumper but if they aint that well trained. Slap a bit in their mouth so ya dont kill your self. These are TWELVE HUNDRED POUNDS OF OPERATING SPOOKY BRAINED MUSCLED ANIMALS!!! not lil puppies you can pick up and push around they are animals that will take a mile if you give an inch
CowgirlGoneJumper 4 months ago
@CowgirlGoneJumper If that mare you know is deathly well trained like you said, then she wouldnt mind the bitless bridle.
rachelheck93 4 months ago
@CowgirlGoneJumper not deathly well trained but trained to where you could let lil kids ride and she is fine but not deathly well but they used bitless and it made a dent in her nose and she got away with murder till they finally put her back in a bit

Respond to this video... and some horses can be deathly well trained and not go well in a bitless bridle.

MollieIsARetard789 5 months ago

IndigoRiderx 5 months ago
Ok i just want to say something. I love horses with all my heart and a bit dose not hurt the horse and if you use and bridle and bit while tranning braking or ridding right you will not ever hurt your horse. it is just people who dont know any better or just dont care hurt there horse and i ride without a bridle and bit alot because i broke all of my horses right to where i can and they trust me and are not scared i am able to pull my bridle out and they have no trouble putting it on
dancinaudi31591s 5 months ago
I use a thick rubber coated bit, and my horse could care less. When you use a hackamore, they eventually damage the nerve endings on a horses face, making the horse ignore pressure there more and more. Until, eventually, they become irresponsive to hackamores, which is dangerous. Yes, some bits are cruel like wire bits, twisted bits, and gag bits. But some, like mine, are perfectly humane if used properly. (:

MackMMorgan 6 months ago
yet but i've heard that they work very well. and ridding in the halter or bitless isnot always safer. my old horse hates the bit so i ride her in a halter a lot, but i never feel like i have as much control, even though she chews the bit a lot she works a lot better in it andi know she will stop in it. also some hackamore bridles can hurt the horse more than a bit can. i've seen horses get their noises broken because of some mechanical hackamore. it just depends on what your own opinion is, but
MackMMorgan 6 months ago
@MackMMorgan
Try buying an actual bit less bridal. My horse hated the bit too (it would take us almost 20 minutes just to get him to take it) We got him one and it works great! they are made to put pressure on certain parts of the horses head so it works the same as a bit, but with much less hassle!
GattoGordoTattoo 6 months ago
@GattoGordoTattoo
i've actually tried one! we got the Dr.Cooks bitless and she did good at first, but not long after having it she got to where she wouldn't stop and would just ignore whatever i asked her to do. so i had to go back to a bit.. =/ when we first got her the girl that helped me used a mechanical hackmore and that pretty much made her worse.. she would throw her head really bad and would buck a lot. so far i've found one bit that she works really well in but that's it! LOL thank u

GattoGordoTattoo 5 months ago
@GattoGordoTattoo it was/is definetly worth finding what your horse works best in! even though a bitless didn't work with my horse, it doesn't mean it doesn't work with others =) it's always worth the shot for sure!
MackMMorgan 5 months ago
@MackMMorgan have you really seen that??? or just heard about it coz tbh someone would have to be v heavy handed to actually break its nose or had probs fitted hackamore too low, i intend to use bitless on my youngster, whichever one she goes best in as she hates the bit and why should i force her.
sorcha24 5 months ago
@sorcha24 i have not seen it actually break the nose, but i have seen a horse that i know who had a major dish in his nose from where the hackamore was and yes the person using it was/is very hard on the horses. as long as the rider is not rough. i agree with if your young horse doesn't like the bit then dont force her, but also keep in mind that at a young age they need time to get used to them. but i hope you find what she does best in!
MackMMorgan 5 months ago
if you know how to use the bit then it's not harmful. yes some people are really hard on their horses and therefore causes problems. however now everyone rips on there faces and causes them harm. some bits are harder than others, and some are kinder. for example, according to my horses previous owner she has stuck her tounge over the bit and out, ive heard this can be caused by harsh handeling, but we bought a bit that is a tounge release so it will keep the pressure from her. i haven't tried it
MackMMorgan 6 months ago
u have now idea wat the f*ck ur talking about if the riders now wat there doing then the horse if fine. so dont accuse us of animal cruilty. my ponies love the bits be cause the bits are soft in there mouth.

ThatSoRandomShow1 6 months ago
if you dont havea bit then you have to make the noseband a throat lash tighter, and thats also bad for the horse.
and im not fully ok with bits but it does help stop them. if it hurts them then they know to stop or else it'll keep hurting them.
LeahRox98 6 months ago
only some bits are made to be cruel such as twist bits and the larger bits. but a soft bit with a soft hand is not cruel and some horses need a bit to occupy them. im working with a colt who actually enjoys a bit or any thing in his mouth. i use a rubber bit with my horse it doesnt hurt him but it aids in my performance with him. its not what u use on ur horse its how u use it

A hackamore under the hands of a bad rider is equally as cruel as a bit. A good rider makes the horse a partner and understands that this is accomplished through a building of trust and respect and gentle communication. A bad rider makes the horse a slave and it doesn't matter what headgear is used...it's all about controlling the horse instead of communicating with him.
sayitasiseeit1 7 months ago
Bridles without bits can hurt more. If you pull it gives lots of pressure on the horses face. That happens everytime, with a bit (If used right and softly) doesn't hurt them unless you yank an their mouth.
iluvmymulechia 7 months ago
My pony would never stop without a bridle, she is so strong. My friend has been riding since a child and she is very good at riding and has 5 of her own and she struggles to stop her sometimes. Not all horses or ponies will listen

Horsedreamer206 7 months ago
If you really think these are any better your blind both bits and hackamores are hard on a horse if you really don't want to be "cruel" to your horse don't ride him cause you can argue that just sitting on their back causes them back and foot problems if you cant deal with some of the small things get out of the equine worlds its a cruel place for rider and horse.
buddysforever23 7 months ago
Most bits aren't as hackamore. If the rider gets to strong with a hackamore then it could easily break the horses nose, so it's all about the rider and how they react.
kenz1ish 7 months ago
I think regardless of the rider if the bit is something that can hurt the Horse then it shouldn't be used especially when its not needed.
stationZero1 7 months ago
It isn't the bit, it's the hands that use them. The same can be said for any bit less bridle. A snaffle can be cruel and a spade can be gentle, although, an educated rider would never over bit a horse. A spade is meant for a highly trained horse and a skillful rider. Adding a stronger bit is rarely the solution to an unruly horse. Most horses have people problems, people do not have horse problems, but, the bit, is not usually the problem.
curlinfan 8 months ago
My horse runs in a double-jointed Mikmar combo and it's the ONLY bit he likes. It looks like a beast but trust me, if I tried to run him XC in a bitless bridle we would both be in big trouble. On the flat he goes in a full-cheek french link snaffle. A LOT less of a bit because he's not being distracted by the jumps. But even on the flat I wouldn't go bitless. His bits aren't causing him harm. He's just not the type of horse that bitless would work well on.
lovethosespots 8 months ago
Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble, but bits ARE NOT BAD WHEN USED CORRECTLY. Chaging to bitless probably won't help bucking, bolting, or biting. A bit does stop a horse. And the fact of the matter is, I use a bitless bridle myself, and have noticed my horse behaving differently in good and bad ways. He has more freedom of movement, which causes him to lose focus and start nibbling away at anything we pass, but I noticed he likes it. I have been riding for years and know that some horses NEED bits

MyPonyMrDarcy 8 months ago
i believe in bitless, but i lso believe in bits. i ride in a french link snaffle. i ride in western bridles with heavier bits but it really depends on the horse and the rider's capability. i have a mare that seems to hate the bit and i am thinking of looking for a bitless, but i also ride school-horses that would be hopeless and run around with every student that gets on if they didnt have at least a snaffle or D-ring. :)
LuvBareBackGalloping 8 months ago

I ride bitless and
I could hurt my horse easily. (I never do that !!!!!!!!!!!!)
I need 3 times less power to break a horse's nasal bone
And I know this because I have unfortunately seen too often
But look at this: Jürgen Krackow
I know him well and he is always fair and even jumps with neck ring
laurasshadow 9 months ago
A bit is only as harsh as the hands controlling it.I use a big shanked twisted mouthpiece bit but my horse has NO problems with it. No head shyness, nothing, why? Because I use EXTREMELY soft hands on him. Hackamores can be just as damaging in the wrong hands. It all boils down to educating people on how to ride, not the equipment we use.
cavyrunsbarrels 9 months ago
Love the video. It didn't just show harsh bits but all bits! Congrats! I did a lot of research with the bit and what it does, it horrible! I am glad people are allowing horse to actually show their true self! I have seen many horses too afraid to show them selves because of the bit, because of the pain it brings. Many tests have been done and it shows all bits do damage (tests done by vets). The one bitless bridle i don't agree on are hackamores. Another cruel way of riding. A Halter does fine.

I understand the professianial riders pull but in my opinion it is almost only them. Every horse I ride has a bridle that fits not one that is to small. THough yes the best people are a little inhumane!
charlottehorses101 10 months ago
Its not the bit it is who is on the horse and how hard they are on a horses mouth i use one on all my horses and never had a problem
crazybarrelracer100 10 months ago
Bitless with bad riders are more dangerous than bits with bad riders. I've seen people break their horses noses SO easily, with even less pressure. But I've NEVER seen a rider cause any major harm to a horse using a bit.
You want to ride bitless, great. I ride with a neck rope all the time in freestyle reining. But the bit is a tool that can be used correctly. A gentle snaffle to start, a curb late ron for onehanded. Last time I checked, none of my horses even need me to touch the bit heavy.
Weaponsmaster8595 10 months ago
@9showjumper With the right kind of training over long time, it would be perfectly possible to ride her bitless. I'm not saying riding with bit is wrong, I do it myself. I'm just saying it is possible to ride bitless, I do it myself, I variate. Even the most bolting horses CAN be trained to be ridden bitless. You just have to accept that it will take time.

Its not bad at all...I had a bad riding day which I pulled hard and bailey never bucked kicked or did anything with me
lovetylerwardmusic 10 months ago
some people are bad riders and get fustrated at their horse and cause injuries because they think that it was the horses fault but its not . some horses are sweating and there mouth is open that is more likely because they worked hard and are trying to get more air to cool down .BITS ARE NOT USED FOR PAIN UNLESS USED THE WRONG WAY Clinton Anserson has some amazing horses and he uses whips but his horses were trained like that and it is not used for pain there performancecues are with the whip
brookblonde07 10 months ago
A bit is not based of pain but it really hurts your horse by the lightest pull.
There is a lot of examining about bits and all of them prooved that a bit has a lot of effect.Ofcourse i respect your opinion to, you onley have to know that it is painfull.
Sorry for my bad english...
MsGigantica 10 months ago
Hackamores are painfull to, the onley thing wath is not painfull is a verry light bridle, like a rope halter, and than you still must ride whit you reins in a bow.
MsGigantica 10 months ago
not saying bitless bridles are bad, if you tried riding some of the horses i ride with out one you would have no hope in getting anywhere! i can see how a bit can cause pain and so on, just not every horse will go well with a bitless bridle, it just depends on how you are with your hands ... lik easlong as you dont yank around and keep your hands still then i dont see the problem with bits ? ...
minietheminx 11 months ago
the mare i ride is in a crossover bit-less bridle.

But personally,istillusethebits.

not all horses can be riden in a hackamore!! One of the horses is far too strong to be ridden bitless her name is Crazy Baby
lexiandlovey4ever 11 months ago
My riding instructor always says "A hackamore is a lot more bit than a snaffle or other bits" this is becasue hackamore cut off air partially and the one part presses into the horse face where a bit is just applying pressure to the mouth when used correctly.
ZepRidesItRight 11 months ago
Hi just a quick question, mmy mums cob has started being broken in ( by me ) and my mum diddnt want him having a bit so we got him a bitless bridle, he has been ridden in a halter all the time and once or twice in a normal bridle with a bit, and he was fine, but with the bitless bridle he kept shaking his head around and tryed rearing when i went to get on him, he wouldnt stand still and kept trying to scratch his head, then took of acorss the field ? i took it of straight away and he was fine?
MyCheekyPony 1 year ago
@melissanamaste There are plenty of inhumane hackamores (excuse my spelling) that look very uncomfortable. Having a piece of stiff twisted rope putting pressure on my nose sounds worse than just a plain old snaffle. And technically any equipment could be "uncomfortable" to a horse: saddle, halter, girth, or us just having our weight on their backs. We don't use any of the equipment because the horse asked us to, we use it because we need it. And just because you don't use it doesn't make it bad.
oPinkPonyo 1 year ago
I personally think that if a bit is used with the wrong rider it can be extremely hard and painful on the horses mouth. Foam doesn't mean pain but is actuall a form of sweat. When I take my horse out of the pasture his mouth is sometimes foamy and there was nothing in his mouth other than grass. Nice video though:)
4evermonticello1999 1 year ago
Listen here! I'm tired of all you people who say that bidlees can damage as much, and that it depends on the rider! Honestly ... I think it's because you have not tried the other method, and like has set his head that you are doing is right! Anyone can make mistakes, and why not ride without bite when it is 1000 times better for the horse? Anyway...What would you rather? Make things more fun for your horse, or be indifferent. It's your decision! But think you about :)
frejaogdixiestyre 1 year ago
None of my horses have foamed at the mouth, bled, gotten cut, or hurt in anyway from a bit. Anything in the horse world can become a weapon of pain and hurt for horses in the wrong hands. I'm sure horses have been hurt with bit less bridles as well. C;
Rottikins 1 year ago
by the way, only people who dont know how to ride hurt their horsesw mouth with bits. even if you put a heay bit in a horses mouth, if you are soft, it can help. i jump my horse 4 foot with a full bridle, and he is amazing.

BUT any way my message is If you have a horrible rider u get a bad usage of the bit, but a good rider means good useage of the bit,
It Is YOUR choice weather or not YOU have a bit or not
OR whether YOU use a bit CORRECTLY.
I say WE all should SHUT UP about it and leave as its OUR OWN choice .
missponyluver11 1 year ago
Why are they wrong, the thing thats makes bits wrong are the riders. Okay some horses are okay with hackamores ( bitless bridles) But some horse need more control, I read a book once in it a horse a realy strong bit, the horse was sold the owners changed to a snaffle bit the horse was fab, no logger whizzy, didn't buck, rear, bolt. Some times you can combine the two a strong nosed band then a light bit for back up.BUT any way my message is If you have a horrible rider
missponyluver11 1 year ago

Just remember a hack cuts off the horse's airway when pulled on
Standardgal 1 year ago
Bits are only as bad as the rider's hands. I have a Thoroughbred that I can ride in a halter and lead rope, but he actually PREFERS a bit. Why? Because of the detailed communication we have that way. If you were to put a soft (thicker, with a french link) snaffle in a horse's mouth, and put a complete beginner on that horse then that horse won't have as many issues as some do with a hack. I know some horses that no matter the training, they just can't deal with the pressure of a hack vs snaffle.
Standardgal 1 year ago
I Ride In A hackamoor On All My Horses, Evan My Horse That We Are Going to Start Training in reining. But If You Ride Like Me It Doesnt Matter If you have a bit or not i let all the horses i ride have their heads
FreekyDragon96 1 year ago
Yall shouldn't judge the tool, but the executioner. I ride all my horses with a standard english bit (double broken), and my showjumpers bitless with a mechanical hackamore. Why? Because my showjumpers can be crazy, and normal bits only blind a running horse. Pain scares them, and i will not have any of my horses in distrust because their rider is too big a coward to examine the problem
I use normal bits for my horses in training because it gives detail that a hackamore cant give.
xCarliniii 1 year ago
I dont use bits myself. I think that they are unnecessary and can be used in terrible ways. BUT I do think this vid puts forward a slightly ignorant point of view. Firstly, bits are an effective way for a novice rider to stop a novice horse. They are not terribly harmful if used in the right hands, and can do less damage that a bitless under the right conditions.
However the myth that you "must" have a bit in a horses mouth is rubbish. ANY horse can be ridden bitless with the right training.
CStudent101 1 year ago

ThoroughbredLover1 1 year ago
i would but my pony would kill her self over the jumps
jillysgem 1 year ago
Hello, Bitless bridles may seem like a good idea but they are just exactly the same as using a bit. Being too rough on the bit can damage the horses mouth but the same happens with the bitless bridle. If it is miss used, that can easily damage the horse. The recent owners of my newest horse had him in a bitless and they must have been harsh as there is now a raised part on his face from it and it's hard to get near it. It's difficult to put the bridle on him as he is learning, you can't touch it
SonicRiotx 1 year ago
i learned to ride on a hackamore so i could learn how to use my hands properly before i moved on to a bit. then one day i was jumping and she bolted FOR the jump and pivited (sorry, cant spell that) on the landing. scence then we have had to use a bit on her. and the horse i own now also needs a bit because he likes to run at jumps and in the canter.

im with you i hate bits! and i use them right but it still does not work for me so i tried bitless i have not had any problem at all!! im Bitless all the way!! =D

A lot of people see this as an insult to their riding. I see it as an insight of the different methods to training a bonding with your horse. BUT both bitless and and bit can cause pain to a horse. So neither one is the right or wrong way.
JumperHunterLover 1 year ago
I agree and disagree with you here. Some horses dont do well in hackamores and some do awesome! I think it all depends on your horse. I like to use hackamores on my Arabians but I use snaffles or soft bits on all my other horses.

@StarshineRNO can I just ask why you only use the hackamores on the arabians?

I gave up bits six years ago (before bitless was so popular) when I started working with racehorses off the track after ther mouths were ruined by racing. And let me tell you this from the experience of thousands of bitless riding hours they work!! I have yet to come across a situation or a equine sport where the bitless bridle did not work! I have faced many harsh comments regarding my methods but the funny thing is....all of my critics had never tried riding bitless...ever!

my mare actually is very good without a bit. at the walk anyways. there are just some horses that u need a bit with. my horse for sure needs one so she feels more contact because she is super hyper at the canter and i have to pull and pull to slow down or stop
Horses4ever8 1 year ago
@Horses4ever8 Try teaching the (moderate) one rein stop (but start at the beginning) at the walk.....also you should ride enough to aquire a "balanced seat".....and "teach" the horse to whoa.....horses no how to do almost everything they day they're born.....a good teacher has a horse that does these things when he wants him too......bits dont hurt horses.....hands do...!!!
jhhwingnut 1 year ago

What about the breathing problem created by the Bit -you see airflow is reduced when swallowing food so when a Bit is fitted it gives a false signal because the saliva reflex makes the brain think food is coming this in turn reduces air temporarily and we work our horses in this restricted airflow stage and this is without any reins being used!
zrx110099 1 year ago
@oPinkPonyo i agree with u at the start it saaid that by giving up the use of bits wont sacrafice any control bullshit it will u can baresly stop the fucking horse if u use the bit correctly its fine if u dont than fuck all of them that dont they can have a bit in their mouth i have a horse she loves the farking bit because she was mouthed and controlled properly the people of society out there dont understand that some people are good some are evil
tillytramp123 11 months ago

If you want handle a bit without pain, the reins must hang in a bow.
That is the same as riding without bit.
MsGigantica 10 months ago
@MsGigantica Using a bit is based off of pressure not pain. Anyway, I have already had many people reply to my comment. You ride bitless, good for you. I ride with a bit, good for me. There are tons of methods to handling horses. We all have our opinions and "facts" about them. I respect your opinion, but my horses are healthy and happy. I'm not going to stop using my tack because someone on youtube told me to. Not trying to be rude.
oPinkPonyo 10 months ago
i see your point i hate using the bit on my horse. i can't afford to buy a bitless bridle at the moment when im in the paddock i use a halter and leadrope and ride bare back and i can really see the difference in my horses and my mood we feel more like a team of freedom, i feel alot safer to. but it's all different when i put the saddle and bridle on my horse hates it and tends to fight me sometimes and i don't feel safe in the saddle either.
bitless and bare back we are free!!!!

By the way those '' rope bridles'' are worst then the bit because they push on the nerves of the horse and will make them head shy.

zrx110099 1 year ago
@nerdcrossing101 no they dont, i ride my horse in a rope halter and a bitless bridle with a rope nose band and she is fine, you would have to have spikes on them to actually damage the nerves, dont talk until u try, believe my my horse hates bits, she wont open her mouth if i put one on, she likes bitless bridles and loves rope halters, i can see from her behaviour, plus the bit ( a kk trainer thick, one of the nicest u can get) gave her teeth problems and a sore mouth
ArabKate 1 year ago
@nerdcrossing101
If you use a rope bridle, must the reins hang in a bow, just like with a bit...Otherside your horse has pain, with bridle is the pain much more. If ride bitless onley with a neckrope or somethimes with nothing, your horse doesn't have pain.
MsGigantica 10 months ago
@nerdcrossing101 Of the many hundreds of horses I have seen ridden with rope halters/bridles I have never seen one that is head shy. They are very light and would have to be adjusted absolutely perfectly for that particular horse to even go near the facial nerves. That is one of the many old wives tales that abound. Tools don't make horses head shy, PEOPLE do. They become PEOPLE shy because of bad treatment, heavy hands, and people who don't know what they're doing.

Andrea9514 1 year ago
This is probably the best bitless montage on youtube. The poster states that it is rough handling that damages the horses mouth not the bit itself. Some horses like bits as they do not like the poll, chine groove or nose pressure a bitless provides while others like the bitless. I think however that a proper bitless bridle fits correctly as an incorrectly fitting one will cause more long term damage than say a snaffle that is too short. Also most competitions require a bit in the horses mouth.

My poor horse was abused when he was younger so now he has a pretty much numb mouth, it's terrible what some people do.

@starxrobin3 OUCH! Do you ride him bit-less?
Andrea9514 1 year ago
@Andrea9514 No I don't, I've only had him since September, and I really want to try riding bit less but i'm not sure how he'll react to it, seeing as he's been ridden in a bit for nearly 16 years :/
starxrobin3 1 year ago
@starxrobin3 My horse is 21 and he has been ridden with a bit his whole life and he was MUCH happier, calmer, more responsive, and willing when I rode him bit-less for the first time. So I have stuck with riding him with only a rope halter, I hope to purchase a bit-less bridle soon, but really, he works fine with just a halter, I was jumping him yesterday and I had full control over him, and he never refused, which he ALWAYS did when I rode him with a bit. He's just BETTER bit-less he's SO happy

@Andrea9514 Oh really? I'll have to look into getting him a bitless and see how he reacts to it :)

* My horse isnt the most trusting horse in the world, although I trust her with my life I just dont think that having a bitless bridle would help me in any way as she is how she is and she didnt really accept not having a bit in her mouth as she is used to it. She has a rubber bit, which doesn't hurt her mouth as much as her old owners used to jam her in the mouth.
livilovesriding 1 year ago
a bit does not necessary cause a horse to buck. *

using a bitless bridle is fine, if you horse accepts the nose and poll pressure!
