  • This is faster than the studio version...

  • slowed down? lol

  • u doing great

  • awesome guitar!!! haha

  • Oh I get it that's sarcasm. U trickster u

  • man, you totally got all of my respect. well done on this cover. i actually thought at first this was done on keyboard. how wrong i was.

  • tell me, why do u title your video slowed down when its even faster than normal?

  • great cover bro ! :)

  • @Ednerd

Sweet vid man, ive rlly been wanten to learn this do u kno of any tutorial or mabye some tabs?

  • @carthsgtr

U cant be sreious? He wanted to prove when it comes to guitar there are no limits to what it can do or the music it can play. Its one of few instruments that is extreemly versitile

  • Personally I don't know why Eddie didn't just use a keyboard.

  • I love you

  • Do you play this with clean tone? Oh and would a Jackson dkmg work with this?

  • That was great!

  • damn that was fucking great

  • is this song easy to play?

  • i know that guitar is discontinued, but how much was it when you bought it?

  • Do you know how much it will take to freeze a volume pot cuz i play cathedral a lot?

  • nice bro, enjoyed the visual, still tryin this and little guitars

  • Pure skill right there

  • Man, out of all the Van Halen songs I"ve learned. I've never even attempted that one. Diver Down was my first VH album in1982, and I remember being mesmorized by this one and listening to it over and over picturing Eddie on a Keyboard or something? One of these days I'll figure it out.

  • @1970michplar yeh, you should learn it. It's actually pretty easy once you get the technique down

  • goddam this isnt slowed down at alll!!!!!!!!! its played faster!!!!!!!!

  • Hey man, how much delay do you have on while you are playing this? It sounds somewhere in between 200-300 ms, but I'm not sure.

  • A new kind of music has been done. Cathedral Music.

  • Ednerd,

Awesome performance! Also, I'd love to see you perform Cathedral at the regular time/pace.

  • How much did your delay pedal cost????? Maybe I´ll buy one.

  • i Want bUy ur Guitar

  • Great! Can you give me your delay settings? Time, feedbacks etc.

  • In an interview, Eddie Van Halen said that his favorite songs were Secrets and Cathedral. Coment.

  • I´m glad to see so many diferent cathedrals in YouTube.

  • Great job!...im surprised that you dont freeze your pot....Im trying it with a volume pedal...its ok, but not the same by any means.

  • did you use delay here?

  • Awesome job on the best solo ever. Very impressive

  • Good job for actually using the volume knob.

  • LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • whats the knob he turns? volume? tone? treble?

  • yeah its pretty SLOW

  • wholy shit thats fast o.O lol xD

  • i like it. of cource you didnt slow it down but i like it better the fast way

  • whats your Delay set at?

  • nice job bro! Keep up the good work.

  • thats speed up lolz

  • lol

  • thats speeded up uhh... thats not slow!

  • sounds more sped up than it does slowed down...

  • whats the set up in your amp

    a really needd to know

    thanks

  • basically its just the delay set at 400ms and you have to swell the notes with the volume knob

  • Ednurd..I like you the best out a all these vids I check out. Mainly because you stand up like EVH and you look natural and comfortable playing. It's a lot easier to play his stuff when you sit down. I guess that's why almost everybody does it that way. I sit down to learn stuff but I always let my guitar hang by the strap so when I stand up...it ain't like " oh dang ..uh wait..let me start over..I swear I can do it...

    Check you later..

  • LOL, thanks levi. that's exactly it. I always try to play / practice standing up. learned that a long time ago.

  • @Ednerd That was funny-lil ol switcharoo!! How many Volume pots have you fried playin that? ya have it down pat!! i tend to lag or jump the delay at one point or the other--takes alotr of focus to play Cathedral, and you do the song justice my man!!!

  • hey thanks wacmac! haven't burned up a pot yet. just takes some practice. once you get the timing down, work on varying the amount of swell and the speed of the turn off. I think as Eddie goes up to the higher notes he cranks it higher and and shuts down faster. gives it that feeling rather than being mechanical. ya know?

  • that was hella slow as fuck. XD ha hella dope...

  • very nice guitar Bro...

  • wait ednerd was this song easy to learn and how does you get the tempo right for the volume switch?

  • once you get the technique down. it's pretty simple. hardest part is keeping it clean. I set the tempo based on that last part, where he does the bump pa dump pa part. just get the delay right for those two notes. that's how I do it. but you have to play it at the speed of the delay.

  • What type of amp do you use?

  • Lol I was wondering if you were going to play it slow after, but then I just got to thinking if you were playing this part fast or if it was you playing normal speed, because it looks like it could have been.

Either way, the fact that you can play it near-perfect is awesome.

    Kudos.

  • thanks Magneto. I played it fast intentionally. just to see how fast I could do it. no other reason

  • Omg that is very very slow thanks man for this lie you given you tube, thanks *starts clapping*

  • *taking a bow* You're welcome, and thank you for your many wonderful contributions as well.

  • @Ednerd man i want u to be my teacher :D hehe

  • holly shit that was slow

  • that was the slowest guitar ive ever heard lol.

  • Now Thats Slow^^

  • reminds me of big sur moon

  • yea i thought that to =)

  • FASCINATING!

  • how do you use the knob to make the effect?

  • He's using the volume knob, tap a note while the volume is off and then turn it on slowly to practice.. when you speed it up you can get this cound

  • @Enigma3390 thanks man,do you know what effects pedals hes using if any?

  • I don't think any pedals, i never do. you do need a decent amount of delay and a little reverb and chorus though

  • @Enigma3390 oh,i dont have delay or chorus in my amp(i got a fender frontman 25r)can you suggest any cheap chorus or delay pedals?

  • @guitarlord247 You don't nessecarily need chorus to sound like this. But you'll definately need some delay. Do some research.

  • ok,thanks man

  • @guitarlord247 hey man, it depends on your style of plaing and whether you wanna spend a lot of money for some really cool effects or just want a cheap one to get you by. I'd personally buy a Zoom pedal, i think it's the 606 or 707. It's a little more expensive(around 60 online) but you can get the sounds you're looking for plus a lot more. It sounds very good for its price

  • hey glord. I'm using a Boss DD-6, but you just need something that has a slow enough delay to create that sequencer sound. Eddie used some chorus on this as well. for this I just used my phase 90. not quite the same thing but, I wasn't really going for accuracy, just speed. :)

  • thanks ednerd.ive heard alot about the phase 90,would you recomend one?what exactly do they do?

  • yep, my fav effect. even if you are not a VH freak, it's still a great effect. it creates a kind of wha sound. eddie used it on most of his solos. I recommend the EVH phase 90, with the script button. it's a must have.

  • @Ednerd ill check that out,do you know what distortion pedals (if any) eddie used in the early days?

  • he used preamp gain only..... wanna know more

  • this is incredible!

  • best cover of cathedral I've seen so far (and I've seen lots of them, trust me)

  • a delay pedal at apprx 395 msec with a chorus effect

  • 3 strings

  • this is amazing like better than eruption

  • That was freakin awesome, seriously where'd you get the frankenstrat, did you make it yourself?

  • I totally stripped out the volume pot knob on my music man evh attempting this haha. Nicely done.

  • omg

  • this is how fast eddie sometimes played it live but u played as fast as him without mistakes lol

  • dude u are really good

  • One of the best guitar posts I've ever seen on You Tube!! Awesome!! Better than the rest for sure!!

  • Where'd you get the frankenstrat?

  • I KNOW I WANT IT!!!!!!

  • I think it's a charvel model they don't make any more, u used to be able to order them I think

  • You're good for sure...but I prefer it a little slower.

  • could you send me tabs

  • wat pedals are u using

  • flat or standard

  • and how exactly is that "slowed down" - title is misleading. good job though.

  • I used to play it twice as fast, but it was causing health issues.

  • what health issues? :o

  • what health issues like carpal tunnel

  • great job man. a little fast though

  • sounds BETTER sped up. Kudos EDnerd :)

  • no sock on the bridge?

  • Yeah newer guitars don't have the knob problem but my old Gibson already gets hot halfway so I just play this the delay pedal way.

  • sei bravissimo

  • EdNERD you rule! One of my favorite youtuber's.

  • say good bye to ur knob!!!

  • been playing this for years. never had a problem.

  • well eddie said his knobs would get hot and freeze up.

  • yeah, I think he said it frooze up at the end of the one they used on the album. you can hear it.

  • awesome skill !

  • Man Don't call yourself EDnerd.. That's puttin' you down E'se... Call yourself ed,fuckin'halen bro......... YOU ARE GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is some ggod tapp'nnnnnnnn

  • my spanish teacher says that e'se (essay ...whaterver) means "that"...

  • very good

  • Beautiful 5 from 5 again and again. Thanks soooooo much for posting!!!

  • Beautiful. Man you gotta help me out. I've been trying this forever and I can't figure out one thing. I have all the notes right. It just doesn't sound right with the volume control. I can't figure out where the volume control should be, and how much to turn it. Maybe I don't have the right amount of gain, and that's effecting it or something. I don't know but please HELP ME!! Btw I have a Jackson with Floyd Rose if that helps at all.

  • the volume should be all the way off when you hammer the note, then turned up as high as you can, and immediately turned all the off again. after you get that down, you can vary it a little. listen to the album, you can hear how he varies it. overdrive is not necessary, but it does make it easier.

  • You need to use a delay pedal, and play within the rest of the first note you play and the repeated delay effect, so it'll kind of 'double-bounce' the notes

  • You rock!

  • what do u mean slowed down?

  • its a joke. he actually sped it up. get it? he likes sarcasm

  • That kicks ass-great performance!!!

  • are those EVH Charvels worth what they cost?

  • deffinitely! I own a yellow/black one and i wouldn't trade it for anything

  • thats slowed down? , it's awesome , but too fast

  • He did that on purpose... ( ^_^ )

  • He did that on purpose... ( ^_^ )

  • That's awesome. You got some talent there, dude.

And, at the song itself, It's very unique. Can't wonder why people say Van Halen is one of the most influential guitarists ever. :D

  • dude you kick major f*ckin ass!!!!

  • if thats slowed down i would hate to see you at full speed man, nice playing, i like the phaser especialy

  • Brilliant dude!!

  • What effects do you use on this?

  • delay for the sequencer effect and a chorus, also a little reverb

  • and if you dont mind me adding to this for rastacamal, i found it to be easier if the volume is CRANKED

  • hey you love eddie as me ,congratulations you are great

  • That is sooo good!! Slowed down my ass!!

Pretty good with ya' finger's huh? hehe...

God I love a guy who can play.

  • I'm great with my fingers, and even better with other things. :)

  • you kill that bro

  • very good cover indeeed very good the only thing is that i find it faster than the original anyway cool frankenstrat!!

  • I'm pretty sure it was intended to be faster than the original. If it wasn't, oh my goodness this guys timing is soooo off. This cover is perfect though. Veeeeeeeery good.

  • in this song, did eddie use distortiong and if so what do u know how u would out the other strings? (im learning this song.)

  • I don't think he used distortion. I know he used a stratocaster. I think he just used his left hand to mute out the other strings. some people hang a sock or cloth over the nut to mute out the strings.

  • too fast!!!!

  • bad ass solo man!!

  • hey man do u think u could show me the tabs or the universal (preferb tabs) way to play this song? would be a great help! thanks

  • don't have the tabs. I learned this piece a long time ago. It's just simple major chord arpeggios. starting with B

  • wow insane job men

    congratulations

  • this video helped me out alot to learn cathedral i can do it just as fast now thanks to this video:)

  • Whoa NICE FRIKEN JOB ! Is that The $26,000 replica!? and do u have the tabs for that song?

  • thanks. no it's the $2,600 replica, and no I don't have the tabs. It's just simple arpeggios though. major chords

  • wow you fucken retard thats not the 26k replica, it would be so "fucked up" if it was the replica.

  • Ednerd, I've watched this and most of your videos many times and I'm always amazed.

I bet what most people dont know is that in addition to you awesome guitar chops, you're a very cool down to earth guy. You've answered every email I've sent and NEVER showed any type of attitude.

Take care and I'll e in touch soon about my Frankie paint project. --Peace

  • thanks Harleydude! Hey, I know I'm nothing special and a big reason I put these vids out there is to help other guitar players. I really wish I had a resource like this when I was first learning.

  • Way Cool!!!

  • Great work Ednerd!! (Five stars + favorite)

BTW...if by "slowed down" you mean "sped up", then yes. LOL!!

  • thanks, yeah I was trying to see how fast I could play it without having a stroke. :)

  • lol, yea that was fuckin bomb

  • comment on my channel where you got that beasty guitar too

  • Wow... I've watched EVH for years now,and cannot think of anyone who has come close to him...You do. Thats awesome bud. Well done!

  • thats not slow

  • This is not what I would call "slowed down", but this is what I call "yeah"!! Nice playing!

  • how did you figure that out can you like tab it up or show me where you got the tabs for it

  • COMMENT MY CHANNEL ON WHERE YO UGOT THAT GUITAR!! dude!! :] and nice playing

  • christ

  • Eddie would be proud

  • the man !!!!

  • thars a two liner lol!!! go ed your not a nerd

  • go ederd go!!! fucking bad ass man

  • >> um, i've never heard this song before, soo...

was the entire song made of hammer-ons and your right hand playing with the tone knob??

  • it was exactly as ednerd plays it here....except he's using the volume knob, there is no tone knob on that guitar

  • Yeah. It's an eddie classic.

  • This technique is "Volume Swells". EVH made it to sound like a curch organ, hence the name Cathedral.

There are other excellent covers here with tapping.

  • nice done dud

  • dam thats great, lol i got it slowed down my ass great playing
